What pedal box for hydraulic clutch setup?

Im going to swap my auto for a manual and its using a hydraulic clutch, i know that GD pedal boxes arent bolt on, what pedal box can I use thats direct bolt in?

Also, how thick are the spacers on the Outback sub frame, depending on when this happens I may or may not have done my spacer delete, so I might make temporary spacers to throw on until i do it

I think the 97 and up legacy uses hydraulic clutch. My friends 96 have a cable and i took off a hydraulic one from a 97 GT.

And why do the GD boxes not fit?

Pretty sure the GD box bolts in, at least they did in my 93' and if it fits the older one I'd assume they fit the BD too.

Yea I have my GD pedal box like 95% of the way in currently. Just need to snug it down to the firewall which in turn should allow the top two bolt holes to line up.

I have read plenty of other swaps and never heard that the GD pedal box doesnt fit.

My friend tried putting a WRX pedal box into his SS and it didn't bolt in, and there's a write up in the tutorial section where it didn't bolt up to his outback. They "work" with some fabbing but I want a literal bolt in set

Well I will have mine completely in by this weekend so I can report back.

The way it stands now... the 4 nuts around the master brake cylinder bolt right up, the two studs for the master clutch cylinder match up to the two bolt holes/large hole in the firewall.

The top two bolts holes are currently only about 1/2 inch off but I also havent tightened up the top two nuts around the master brake cylinder.

From my side by side comparison of the AT brake pedal assembly and the MT brake/clutch pedal assembly, the mounting hole locations are identical.

The only reason why mine isnt completely in line right now is because the massive bundle of wires on the bulkhead harness is just barely in the way. It is a REALLY tight fit to get the MT pedal box in there considering when the car was manufactured, it was manufactured as an AT so there was no consideration for where to tape the bulkhead harness because there was TONS of room in that area with the AT pedal box.


What areas didnt bolt in to your friends SS and outback?

That's great, I am talking about my clutch. It is a 98 Legacy Brighton with a cable actuated clutch.

I'm betting that the EJ22 stayed with a cable clutch system and they used Hydraulic clutches with the EJ25. I know a 97 Outback uses a hydraulic clutch.

Correct... at least for 1999.

The service manual shows the 2.2L with a cable as part of the clutch pedal assembly and without a cable for the 2.5L

So that being said.. If your car came with a 2.5 then GD boxes will fit. If you have a 2.2 then you need to "work it" "work it".

I didnt see any pictures of the actual bracket on those links but I am having a hard time believing that Subaru manufactured the body of the BD separate for 2.2L and 2.5L.

I understand the bracket itself might be different but that would mean there are either two sets of holes for both bracket or that Subaru made the 2.2L BD shell specifically for the 2.2L which doesnt make sense considering there is still holes and cut outs for a Clutch Master Cylinder... which a 99 BD with a 2.2L certainly wouldnt have because it is a cable clutch.



What mounting holes or points are different between the 2.2L and 2.5L?

This would mean that I wouldnt be able to use a 2.2L AT brake pedal in a 2.5L AT of the same year considering they mount to the same holes at the MT brake/clutch pedal. :smt017

As I said before the bracket is different. The holes are in the same location it just needs to be "worked"..

None of this referenced AT.. only MT.

Yes the bracket is clearly different as the 2.5L has the section on the right which has the two studs for the master clutch cylinder.

This makes complete sense on why I have REALLY limited space... not only was the car an AT, but it was also a 2.2L so there was probably little if any consideration given for space in the pedal area when it came time to tape/secure the bulk head harness on the production line.

I think I am going to have to wrap a belt around the fattest part of the harness (about as big around as a can of soda) and have someone pull towards the rear of the car in order to give me the space I need to line up the top two holes.

You can always put the aluminum pedal covers over the GT pedals I believe.

Yes but why? You can just install the fancy pedal covers on your BE pedal box.. They're just pedal covers.. nothing more.. nothing less
