View Full Version : So WHAT IF..... Sport Shift in a 1999 GT

Rubie_25GT

I have a 1999 Subaru Legacy GT which has the third generation transmission which makes it the bastard child of the second generation. So, I have come across a 2003 Subaru Legacy Outback with a 4EAT that has sport shift at the junkyard. 2003 introduced the 4eat with a sport shift option and VTD I believe. I am wondering if I can transfer over the shifter junk and possibly the TCU to convert my "technically" third generation transmission to sport shift capable. Is there anything else I would possibly have to transfer over? I'm trying to avoid yanking an entire trans considering I would think that Subaru would just program a different TCU to save money since it wasn't the only style automatic they sold at the time and sport shift is all in the electrical and not mechanical other than the shift lever itself...

Any insight on this would be appreciated! I'm going to go back to the junkyard to try and find it and yank out whatever I would possibly need. Also, will dismantle a 2nd gen while I'm there (since they're everywhere) and see what the differences are.

Um... I am not sure what 4EAT came with sport shift...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Su ... nsmissions (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Subaru_transmissions)

From my knowledge... the ones that came in late 3rd gen AT's and Baja turbo AT's were a 5EAT with sport shift.

A picture of the vin from the car that they tranny is in would help. As would a picture of the shifter area.

Yeah, wikipedia is crap. It's an SS-4EAT according to the Subaru manuals I have. That also explains the 4EAT Sportshift Turbo Baja my neighbor has (which Rubie_25GT has seen).
Rubie_25GT, I'll send you a PM.

So really it is a 4EAT with "Power Mode" not "sport shift"... is that what you mean?

I have never seen a 1st gen legacy with the + - shifting ability.

1st Gen? I am talking about the 3rd Gen sportshift. That's what Rubie_25GT was talking about. And they have a + - shifter.

So it looks like this?

I guess I was mistaken to think that those were 5EAT's

It is this right here in this article:

http://drive2.subaru.com/Fall02/Fall02_2003Legacy/Interior.jpg

I found it in an outback, which is just a gt wagon raised in my opinion. It was the woodgrain and all just like this interior. It was a 4 speed automatic. It blew my mind when I found it and i almost tried to walk out of there with the whole transmission lol Hopefully I won't have to do that.

We saw this in an 03 GT a while back at the junk yard too. I told you to get it then....

I think you're on the right track. Sport shift is essentially bypassing the automatic shift control (which is done based on rev limits and throttle input). I would think that the TCU and the physical shifter mechanism would be enough... but you won't know until you yank it.

Honestly though, having an extra trans lying around isn't a bad idea...

Especially when a trans at our yards are $90.

In addition to the sportshift, you could get the Japanese steering wheel that has the sportshift buttons on them.
I'd stick with the transmission itself being from the US though. That Baja turbo I drove was MUCH more responsive than the crappy sportshifts that were in the RSKs that I've driven.

Its totally do-able. Infact ive been toying with the idea for my car.
My honest opinion for my set up ...just buy a aftermaket tcu.. Since no one elsr has done it that i know of there probably isnt much info which means there will be alot of brain damage.
Thats just the conclusion ive come to for my car. You may decide differently

RUBIE_25GT and I went through the schematics and came to the conclusion that it shouldn't be too difficult. It seems like it's just pulling the trans, TCU, and the shifter and then making all the wiring connections.

Yup pretty much am assuming a complete transmission swap would be in order (which is not too bad since it's just auto to auto). No luck at the junkyard today, but hopefully if I keep going back once a week I will come across a sport shift outback or GT.

Reviving an oldie here, but does anyone now what became of this? I'd like to swap my 03 auto to a sport shift trans...

08-24-2013, 10:02 AM
I'm with you on that; although I'm curious about doing the reverse: would any VTD 4eat transmission (e.g. WRX, 3.0 LL Bean Outback) work in an '05 Baja Turbo with the sportshift feature? This is assuming the Baja Turbo came with VTD...

Reason I'm interested is because I'm looking at one with 205,000 miles, and I'm worried that the transmission would need replacement soon.

As far as I know, the 4EAT in the Baja Turbo didn't have VTD. I think (I could be wrong) it was the 4 speed WRXs that had the system and then it was the 5EAT cars. The LL Bean H6 didn't have it either - that 4EAT was just a 4EAT and a lazy one at that (I owned one).

Someone might be able to say if VTD has to work with the rear diff but if it doesn't, than the proper TCU should be able to deal with a VTD auto swap.

I think...

BUMP...

I don't know much about 3rd gens, so I didn't know this feature was a thing. Found out about the SS-4EAT last week. With a BK GT wagon with 4EAT for wife's daily driver, I'd love to do this swap. So - SS-4EAT Trans, TCU, and JDM Steering Wheel with Sportshift buttons... is this what is needed? Center console SS-4EAT shifter as well? Feasible?

I'd love any updates!

Thanks!

Yes it was your JDM wheel, Dead, that learned me about this! I think you posted before that the wheel has an airbag, but no charge? Is this easily remedied? Is there a special connector/harness for the SportShift controls? That would have to be routed from the TCU and up the steering column? Also, what about the USDM cruise-control stalk? Seems most JDM GT-trim steering wheels don't have cruise. Are the left and right +/- buttons both shift controls, or is one a stereo control? Could the center console Automatic shift selector remain stock USDM 2nd-gen, while still having the steering wheel shift buttons work properly? (I'm guessing no)...

If you still have this wheel when I finish all of my paint and JDM body conversion, I'll talk to you about buying your JDM wheel. :)

I have the same wheel. Mine too did not come with an airbag charge. I took a charge out of a 2002 Impreza that fit perfectly to the wheel and electrically mated straight up to my car, but I have a 3rd gen which I believe has a different airbag connector than 2nd gens.

The sportshift buttons use the wires used for cruise here. You cannot have both Sportshift and Cruise on the steering wheel with the normal clockspring as there are just not enough wires to do both (it would need 5 wires for both, but only has 4 available).

The Left and Right +/- are wired together, you can push either + or either -.

Some general info on the introduction of the 2003 Legacy GT and the Sportshift Automatic Transmission from: http://www.cars101.com/subaru/legacy/legacy2003.html

"NEW FOR 2003 models a lot has changed for 03
the basic L is upgraded with a Special Edition Package. You get a lot for the money.
The GT wagon is upgraded to what would have been a Limited in 2002 although it isn't called that anymore.
GT automatics get the new SPORTSHIFT clutchless transmission with VDT all wheel drive.
And as always, colors come and go...

new for 03 GT

new Major changes for the GT and L models.
new The base GT wagon is gone, so there is now only one GT wagon and sedan. Both are what last year would have been called 'Limited" models but this year there is no such name.
new GT wagon now comes with all the features on the 02 Limited sedan, including upgrades stereo, leather, side airbags, heated seats and etc.
The sedan remains the same with the folllowing changes applicable to the wagon:
new Transmission. This year all automatic tranmission GTs get
SPORTSHIFT. New for Subaru clutch-less shift feature for more controlled and sportier driving. Select'D' (drive) and the automatic shifts normally, or move the gear selector to the left and control the gears by tapping the lever up or down.
Sportshift gear clearly indicated in upper center of gauges
VTD AWD (variable torque distribution) with 45/55 front/rear power split for a sense of stronger acceleration. The VTD system has been used in the H-6 models since 2001."

Okay, so according to the cars101 archive that I quoted in my previous post, the USDM Sportshift 4EAT was introduced in 2002 for the 2003 model year Legacy GT.
However, is this next craigslist ad, I see what looks like a Sportshift shift selector. It is a little different, with no large button on the top of the gear selector, and the USDM labeling facing the Left-Hand Driver position, though. The car is listed as a 2001 Legacy GT Limited:

So, either
A) the model year is not correctly listed, OR
B) the cars101 archive is wrong about the year in which the Sportshift was introduced (seems unlikely), OR
C) the 2001 car was swapped with a 2003+ Sportshift auto (seems unlikely), OR
D) the 4EAT shift selector for Model Year 2001 looks like a Sportshift selector (to my untrained eye), but actually isn't one.

Do all 3rd-gen Legacy auto shift selectors look like these pictured here, whether they are Sportshift or not?

^^ what rkrenicki said. You'll find plenty of Outbacks and GTs with the standard auto shifter... the sportshift happened in very limited numbers. I've been on the lookout for a good example to buy for awhile now. Most dealers list it as "Shiftable auto trans" or similar.

Ah OK thanks guys! rkrenicki, is there what looks like a large button on the top of the shift selector stick, like the one in the JDM clip? If that is indeed a button, what is its function? Is it a simple selector lock release, like any other automatic selector stick? Thanks Huffer! Is AT HOLD/POWER simply the same thing as the POWER MODE as commonly modded in 2nd-gens? Is this a 2-position switch (Power Mode OFF/Power Mode ON) or a 3-position switch (AT Hold ON/OFF/Power Mode ON)?

I ask, because, even though it looks like a common Subaru 2-position pushbutton, it is labeled like a 3-position rocker switch.

On the JDM models, it's a 3 position switch. The USDM models didn't get that switch (or the shifter trim to accommodate it). The USDM 03-04 GT models got the better VTD drivetrains with the smaller 2.5 engine. The Outbacks H6 has had VTD since 2001.

Well I am still confused then, because the JDM clip has the drive selector labeling for a RHD arrangment (without trim I can't tell if there was a AT Power button) but the closeup photo has the labeling for a LHD arrangement. The on-the-side Sportshift slot is also on the right in the closeup photo instead of the left.

As for the HOLD button... this simply holds the gear you are in (depending on the A/T mode you are in)?

rkrenicki
04-18-2014, 12:26 PM
That is because the JDM clip is RHD, and the one I pictured is from a LHD car.

As for the Power/Hold switch.. it was never available in the US on any model. The trim I pictured is from a LHD european car, which DID get the Power/Hold switch. JDM Sportshift cars would have had a power/hold switch on the right hand side of the gear selector.

It is a three position switch, Power, Hold, or Off (center position).
Power mode tells the TCU to shift closer to redline, keeping the car in the power band longer.
Hold is short for Winter Hold. It locks out 1st gear, and locks the center diff to 50/50. This helps in icy conditions to reduce wheel spin when starting off.

The US TCUs have a pin for Power mode, and can be "easily" wired up. Unfortunately, they do not have a pin for Winter Hold on any model here in the states.

Mind = Blown

This is awesome stuff. I don't get much chance to learn all of these details when I am always focusing on 2nd-gen discussions.

I remember now Dead posting some pics of a JDM BG Grandwagon with the A/T HOLD button... I don't remember that older model looking like a 3-way switch, though.

Looking at the pictures of the JDM shifter vs. the EDM shifter.... It seems to me that the ergonomics of the JDM Sportshift slot, on the left of the main PRND321 slot, would work better in a LHD car anyway. That slot is closer to the driver, and I can almost feel myself pulling the shifter towards me while using it in spirited driving, keeping it in that slot. With the EDM unit, I can see myself reaching further away from my body than necessary, and accidentally tugging the shifter out of the Sportshift slot under the same spirited driving conditions.

What about the 3rd-gen cluster? Are there special indicators that illuminate, depending on the A/T mode? Is this cluster a straight swap for BD/BG/BK?

As for the "basic" power mode mod, I did this quite awhile back... it is a small improvement, but the regular 4EAT experience still sucks. I am really excited by the possibility of this Sportshift retrofit!

Then don't get the Japanese one. It sucks too. Get a US sportshift. I drove an '05 turbo Baja with sportshift and it was worlds better than the crappy sportshift in the RSKs I've driven. The Japanese ones weren't very responsive (of course, they were much older too...).

Is this due to the center console shifter, the TCU, or, most likely, the JDM Sportshift4EAT transmission itself?

I'm guessing a mix of the TCU and transmission. I doubt the console shifter would have anything to do with it.

I remember now Dead posting some pics of a JDM BG Grandwagon with the A/T HOLD button... I don't remember that older model looking like a 3-way switch, though.
The 2nd gen "AT HOLD" is just the winter hold function, so it is just on and off. I think its Power switch is elsewhere.

Yes, there is a specific cluster for Sportshift which tells you what gear you are in. There is a US cluster, and many (but not all) of the JDM 3rd gen Black Face Meters for Automatic cars have this function.

No, it is not a straight swap, but it can be done. I put a BFM into my BG a few months ago, and I had it working. There are a LOT of fitment issues, and a significant amount of rewiring to make it work. I was never fully happy with the result, and I ended up reverting back to the normal cluster. I do not have the details in this thread, but I do have some progress shots of it working here: viewtopic.php?p=345336#p345336 (https://sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?p=345336#p345336)

BFM=Black Faced Meter (Tinted cluster face). :smt023

And yeah, thats the half cut. I would have got it, but it's an auto. Trans is worth nothing to me. The motor I could have adapted to the GT-B and avoided the rebuild.

So by "Olympic track and field course" that means you have the 3rd-gen, non-SportShift automatic gear selector, with the around-the-bend shift pattern? like this:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2014/04/23957d1339302555fspartingout2000subarule-1.jpg
And you want to replace that with either a third-gen SportShift gear selector:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/12/IMG_3486_zps667f8982-1.jpg
Or possibly a fourth-gen gear selector?:

I have that very 3rd Gen gated shifter. Item 2 exactly. I would rather hold a button to move the selector than do loopy-loops. I don't even care about using the sport shift feature. If mechanically, it still keeps the linkage in (D)rive, that's Fine by me.

I would glue in a silver fence that blocked the [+] and [-] signals. Personally, If i could retro fit a column shift in I would. There does have to be the one "salmon" modder that goes against the flow of other. Everyone wants a floor shift, not me. :)

The sportshift selector will work perfectly fine on a normal AT car. I have been driving around like that for a while. It is a plug and play change.

That being said, it is a pain to swap it out. You need to disconnect the linkage from under the car and then change the whole selector. Then you need to adjust the linkage after which is sort of difficult by yourself.

I thought about doing this to my car originally as well. Was going to keep her auto, have Level 10 build the tranny and add the flappy paddle shifters to the column. Electrically it shouldnt be too difficult. I would start with Factory service Manual diagrams to see if there are any differences with the valve bodys. I would say you wouldnt even need the whole tranny, the valve body SHOULD be the only part if needed that would have to be swapped.

I Ended up going 5 speed in my car which will most likely end up going Legacy GT 6 speed when 300whp gets boring, or I grenade it. I enjoy electrical work, so if you are set on doing this, I wouldnt mind setting aside some time to look at the schematics to see whats needed.

An '05 Baja Turbo automatic transmission popped up locally on craigslist 111K, price OBO. Seller also has a few other 4th-gen autos (some for 3.0 H6 Outbacks). Did we decide that the Baja Turbo 4EAT is the best match for modding a SportShift into a BK?

camroncamera
05-06-2017, 05:53 AM
Bump! Well the original 4EAT in our BK GT seems to have eaten it today. No prior indications of any problem before except for the common 1-2 shift lurch at low speed. The car has had that for the many years we've driven it daily. Today my wife called me as she was leaving her work to drive home when she told me that as she pulled away from a stop sign, she heard a loud pop or bang, and the car instantly wouldn't hardly move. She managed to get the car to an open parking lot and I drove out to meet her as she called for a tow. I poked around the engine compartment and had a look underneath the tranny but nothing looked unusual such as fluid leaks. The ATF dipstick looked fine, the Redline that I've been running for 3 or 4 years looks like new and the level was plenty high on markings. The engine runs great in neutral, but when rowing the gear selector through each gear with the brakes on, it was easy to hear grinding noise once a gear was engaged. I did not move the car, but when the flatbed arrived, the tow guy had no trouble moving the car in neutral with gravity and foot power in order to put it into position to load it on the truck.

I'd like to know if I can put in a Turbo Baja Sport Shift transmission to replace the dead one for the time being, and then deal with the Sport Shift features at a later time. Any chance of this being plug and play just to get the car back on the road? Or do the matching SportShift gear selector and TCU have to be installed at the same time?

Now I have to hunt for one.

I don't think it was ever clearly answered in this thread, but to answer conclusively... the Sport Shift feature on Baja and 3rd-gen Legacy is exclusive to specific 4EAT Phase 2, Version 1 transmission assemblies with a special Sport Shift solenoid. It might be possible to add this solenoid and the harness to connect it to the valve body, or replace the valve body altogether with one from a Sport Shift enabled 4EAT:
https://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?p=44777410#post44777410

While looking for 4eat info trying to see which cars had 4eat phase 2 version 1 and which had phase 2 version 2, I came across some diagrams showing the difference in valvebodies. Some phase2 version 1 diagrams showed and extra (SPORT shift) solenoid that the non sportshift valvebody did not have, but looked like tgere is a spot for the missing solenoid.

Seems you MIGHT be able to add the SPORTshift solenoid to your valvebody then change trans internal harness w extra plug for solenoid and phase2ver1 ss tcu. Or use phase2 ver1 sportshift valvebody/harness and corresponding tcu. Plus of course ss shiftee. Idk if it will work w.o steering wheel buttons hooked up or gear indicator display not hooked up.

But it seems you should be able to convert phase2ver1 non sportshift to sportshiftusing correct phase2 versiin1 4eat sportshift parts. Def can not use phase2vrrs2 stuff unless car originally had phase2version2 4eat.

Google image 4eat phase ii version I and look for diagrams of valvebody. Most show where sportshift solenoid can go and empty space on non spirtshift valvebidy

I chimed in on an old NASIOC thread on Sport Shift. My hopes of a straightforward Sport Shift transmission swap into my '98 BK were crushed when it was explained to me that the Phase 1 Engine & ECU will not talk to the Phase 2 Transmission and TCU.
However, '99 Legacy owners could take advantage of their transition year and probably make it work with their Phase 1.5 Engine/ECU and Phase 2 Tranny/TCU:

My JDM Sport Shift assembly arrived today, It's pretty nice! So anyway I talked to the transmission shop just before closing, they took it for a test drive and agreed with my symptoms, which they described as "weird" haha. Tomorrow they'll take off the pan and have a look inside for metal bits. Seems like it could be a parking gear issue.

I was hoping to pioneer a Phase 2 Sport Shift into a Phase 1 Legacy, but I could only have the transmission shop stall for so long while I researched transmission harness wiring diagrams. They rebuilt my factory transmission and it wasn't cheap. The car is ready to pick up today. I did have them install the JDM Sport Shift gear selector, but I'll have to install an aftermarket TCU at a later date to enable manual shift features.

Clearly I need to come up with a better shifter surround, I'm thinking a bit of black neoprene. For now I've got a bit of black gaffer tape to cover the edges of the shifter. It looks awful, but hopefully not for long:

Later this summer I'll look into the Forced Four shift box setup and put the Sport Shift gate and JDM Sport Shift steering wheel to actual use:

I am trying to swap a jdm https://m.ebay.com/itm/JDM-02-05-SUBARU-FORESTER-SG5-TV1B5MBYAC-1J-AUTOMATIC-TRANSMISSION-2-5L-2-0L/182736798520?_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIM.MBE%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D20171010182013%26meid%3D9059bdc49b5f4e609d804fe4c166c3f8%26pid%3D100890%26rk%3D4%26rkt%3D9%26sd%3D322812811781&_trksid=p2056116.c100890.m2460 trans in my forester and I was wondering how you swaped the sport shifter.

I'm hoping the one from a baja is plug and play. Which wires did you have to merge or did you run new wires to the tcu?

In hoping I can swap that trans into my 04 fxt, baja tcu and a baja sport shifter and get the vtd in there too.

How is your legacy and have you installed the stuff to get the gear selection?

Hi Pitman, my apologies at the tardiness of this reply... ONE YEAR LATER :( SL-I doesn't seem to alert me to forum replies, and Legacy discussions seemed to have moved over to facebook, for better or worse.

Sadly I have not advanced this project since my last post, other that I made a leatherette shifter surround that looks much better than the temporary gaffer tape as shown above. My Legacy was neglected for much of 2018 while I planned a major brake overhaul (which was finally completed early this fall). I still frequently think of completing the SportShift conversion but it seems there's never enough money left to invest in the Forced Four aftermarket TCU that I've had my eye on.

I hope you're having success with your trans swap.

Still I have not upgraded the TCU but I am occasionally asked how the SportShift gated shifter install looks. Here is the 2nd or 3rd attempt and is the current look:

Photobucket has gone full extortion with their photo hosting. If you are seeing blurred or blocked pictures, be sure to use a browser extension to see the images in context.

Here is the extension I'm using for Firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/photobucket-embedded-fix/
EDIT: I thought this extension solved the Photobucket problem, but in actuality it was the forum code that has special magic. Other forums still have blurred pics on my Firefox browser. In Chrome, however, the extension that did work for me is https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/photobucket-hotlink-fix/kegnjbncdcliihbemealioapbifiaedg

Anyway, it seems that I never posted pictures here of the borked input shaft:

Wondering if direct uploads will work:

EDIT seems to upload but no rotation control?

I installed a script on this forum that will scrape any new photos from 3rd party hosts and copies them to the SL-i server. It does this every 30 minutes or so. I did this way back when Photobucket did their first round of extortion. The script is written in such a way as to get around the photobucket limits, but it works on all other hosts too. The only thing is that if someone deletes a picture from their thread, it does not delete it off the server.

Otherwise, I do not think that input shafts are supposed to look like that.

Brilliant, sir! I wish you could convince all other forum admins to do the same because Photobucket has become PhotoPhuckedItUp.
