I decided one day last summer, after closing on my house, that I was tired of it being slow. It was fun to drive, but way too slow. So! I bought a donor wrx.. and swapped it. With the exception of the wiring merge, I did everything myself.. I'm not saying this to boast, I am putting it out there so that if there are any who have questions. .. feel free to ask. With all the custom shit I had to do, it took me roughly 45-50 hours to complete over the course of 5 weeks.
Here is a current picture, and the most recent video of it on the dyno..

It will be painted shortly all one color, and i havent taken any more recent pictutres aside from the two cellphone shots.. mainly because we got hammered with snow and then the turbo failed

I think that looks damn good! You thinking about upgrading turbo?
Ill be putting in the new turbo (kamak td04HL-19t) and the new injectors (DW 600cc injectors) this week. With that and the supporting mods.. I should be in the 280-290whp and 300-310wtq at 20 psi with full boost by 3200 rpm.

Very nice! I think "hungry" on the fmic is very fitting
Thanks, with the latest tune and my commute I get about 17mpg combined.. should have been called thirsty lol.

Looks great! Very street tough. With your custom flares, can you explain those a bit more?
Well.. I'm actually working on getting them into production. These were a test fit run with a new supplier. They fit well, I made some minor adjustments and we should be going to production soon, I hope.
Basically they will be made of poly propelyne and are bolt/rivet on. It involves cutting the fenders and allows you to run some wide tires/wheels. Car is super sticky on these 245's.. really the last piece to the puzzle is brakes.
I'm eyeballing some 320mm isc 6 pots, but I hear they have warping issues..

Dual exhaust, yo. In those pictures it was hanging fairly low, lower than it usually did due to a torn old rubber hanger.
Unless you're whating something else lol
Will those flares fit a second-gen, or are they gen 3 specific? I love how they look.
They are universal! I kept dimensions that fit a ton of small and mid sized cars. The nice aspect to PP is that it is very easy to work with and pliable in a way that fiberglass is not.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/03/behyta9a-2.jpg
Here they are on my old wagon. Slightly different this was one of the earlier designs. I narrowed them from 65mm to 45mm for a more universal application and subtle design.

I just painted an 00 RS with the 280z flares and the front looked good but the rear flares was too big for the wheels he had. Good job on trimming them
The problem with the 280 ones is theyre staggered. A hard look to pull off on a subaru.
These are based off a 240/ae86 flare.
Huffer
03-07-2013, 01:28 PM
Well they look great. I like the poly idea too. Much like the poly front lips - easier to work with and take damage better.
When I get my next wagon, I'll be looking you up for a set.
Did the turbo and injectors last night.. has a cool cyclic idle now. That'll be gone tomorrow when it gets retuned. It gets out of vacuum at 2250 rpm right now under half throttle. Crazy!
My old td04 also sounds like a maraca. it appears the bearings went and compressor wheel siezed. Oops.
Tgvs decided to die on the dyno today.. guess ill be deleting those..

How bad was the wiring in this swap? I have an 02 and was thinking about doing a similar swap.
The harness I sent out. If you have time and are proficent at wiring its really not that difficult.
I didnt have the time. I was trying to get it done as quick as possible and the 8 hours of merging didnt really fit into my schedule.
Pulled the tgvs last night, deleted and started porting and polishing them.. didn't see anything visibly wrong with them but that doesn't mean they were working.
I say started because I ran out of cutting bits for my dremel
So I got this all back together. Those injectors suck balls. Put my stock ones back in, and then the second turbo went. FUCK! 22 miles and it turned into one piece. Suspect oil feed line they supplied me with..
Nooooo! That's just not cool. Are they going to make it up to you?
I have to pay to ship the turbo back to cali and the injectors back to indiana to get my money back. It sucks but oh well
You have plans in the meantime? Do you think it'll be ready for the meet on May 25?
If not, will you still come?
Yeah I'm going back to stock td04-13t. Either going to have bnr do a rebuild or find a slightly used one. They're not as common as they used to be!
I'm sick of not driving this car.
Yeah. I'm sick of not driving it, too. But since it's, ya know, yours, I guess I'll just have to get over it. Good luck.

Haha thanks man. Just ran into an old friend of mine who was showing off his built v9 big turbo RS and it made me really want to get this shit going.
So she's alive again.. figured out why my turbo assploded too!
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/04/e4e3a6e8-1.jpg
Lol!
The banjo bolt on the left is the factory oil feed bolt from the head to the pressure line. The one in the middle is one of the new stainless ones I bought and the one on the right is what was actually in place of the bolt off the head. It was supposed to look lile the middle bolt..
The company I bought them from oopsed and I didn't pay attention to them. Lack of oil in the turbo from a massive restriction in the line causes it to go boom.

Yes, boom. Next time you are back down on LI, let me know. LISC is finally starting to come out of hibernation for meets.

ROFL. One of the reasons I am moving to VT.
Seriously though.
Old wagon;
First trip
Blew two coilovers
Second
Sheared 3/5 wheel studs off the hub
Finally got towed back to my shop, hopped in my truck, which had an electrical fire on the way home.
Third
Lost my exhaust on 95. Pothole the size of nebraska jumped out of nowhere and sheared the bolts right off the midpipe flange.
Current car;
First trip
Blown coilover
Second
.25" of snow put me in a curb at 10mph bending a wheel, both inner and outer tie rod ends
Haven't been back since in my car
That sounds soooo badass!!
Thankyou. Hopefully you'll hear it in person in a few months.

Dang, had some bad luck there
Hopefully no more badluck now. On to the dyno again!
I'm ecstatic. 258/278 at 17.75psi. Car is tuned for 19 psi, so once I nail down my tiny boost leak (believe its the coupler to the throttle body, worm clamp) I should be golden. I'm not concerned with numbers as much as how well it runs and it runs fucking great. Pulls smooth and hard. Very driveable and good usable power.
Either way its plenty fast and more importantly, reliable.
Also, using some stupid simple math, these numbers and combined with the age of my drivetrain (13 years, 171k miles) I'd estimate BHP/TQ to be around 330/340. That's of course figuring a 25-30% loss, which is typical of an aged AWD car.
That's truly scary... I can't wait to see it!
Paint is here! ...maybe this weekend ill do that :)

$265 a set of four. They're ABS, not fiberglass. Super light, pliable and will stand up to abuse.

Thats exactly what I was thinking
So.. finally replacing blown turbo number 3. Going brand new this time. I love the miata, but I miss trolling the shit out of people.
What year is the Miata? Will we be seeing an MR2 for it soon?
Its a 92. And its going to be a relatively stock daily. Something fuel efficient and mildly fun.
In other news.. my new turbo has no threads In the oil supply port. Fuck!
So, what went wrong with turbo #3?
Oil seals went, bearings fried when it couldn't sustain oil pressure. I'm thinking of adding an oil cooler if I stay turbo.

Some spare dyno footage.. better clip of the tone. The WOT pulls blew out the microphone inside, so I had to step outside to record it lol. The squeal is due to not enough wrap on my idler pulley. Redesigning that.

Fu****g insane, sounds like the devil screaming...what hp/tq you get out of that sc? Notices you headlights flickering..
Yeah.. headlights flickering is due to a faulty ebrake switch. Theyre actually the DRLs cutting out. Annoying to say the least.
It made 170 WHP/WTQ @ 7.6 psi. The blower is just simply maxed out. Can't spin it any faster. So, I've got an m90 that is up next. That should give me my target numbers..
The torque curve just starts at 2500 rpm and carries straight to redline. Its just a stupid flat line, its great.

^^lol..well that's awesome 1055, 170? I would have thought more just by the screaming she was doing. A flat torque curve is better than a declining one right?Sweet work brotha keep powering up.
Btw, I'm going to be getting in a third gen wagon probably next Monday...this guy I talked to is super interested in my bd (4eat), he has a 2000 l wagon (5mt), anyway he asked if I could install a clutch in it for him, sure I say..but he peeped my sedan and his eyes started getting really rapey, walked around it for a minute then shizered himself when he saw that it was auto. He proposed a straight up trade after I install the clutch, he says he burned two clutches in 1 year and tired of paying for it. Not sure what to think, his car runs good no cels low mileage...kinda, 176k..don't know much about these models and motors.
...super excited, sorry if for the threadjackery but you guys own 3rd gen so thought I would share in a pretty good victory.
Yeah, its a very angry 170. Like I said.. 250 is my target, as it was with my turbo.. turbo ended up cranking 10 hp and 30 tq over the goal and was plenty enough for me; but this blower won't support that with the lower compression of the 205.. so bigger blower time!
Keep in mind, that's 220-230 BHP.

Your goal is 340bhp?! Holy crap that's a lot
That's what it made before with the turbo set up.. ~340bhp and ~360ctq. (260/280whp/wtq)
So basically I decided to skip straight to a v8. Like small block chevy v8. It will be happening.

Aw, why a Chevy? Even if you swap it into something no one has ever swapped a sbc into... it will still be a run-of-the-mill sbc.
A 5.0 Ford? better but still kinda ordinary.
Mopar 318? Now we're talking unusual. Yet still with plenty of goodies in the Summit/Jegs catalog. and easily as much availability.
Or what about a Northstar? Wiring might be a PITA but OMGWTFEXOTIC!

Chevy Ls is cheap and reliable, and Ford and dodge suck anyway.
My first plan was to put a built subie motor in an FC rx7, but then after owning one 300+ HP subaru I decided they were annoyingly finicky and I wanted an easy reliable 450hp

I'm a mopar guy at heart. I had a 346 hemi with a wiped out crank I was going to rebuild and drop in, the biggest issue with mopars is width, availability and manual trans options.
Fuck ford. They suck. Everything they do.
You can not and will not get more 'bang for your buck' than you will from an sbc. Simple, reliable power. I'm shooting for 350rwhp. Though I'm sure 400 will be plenty easy enough to attain.
I say throw a twin-turboed 20B in there. That will get you some serious "LOLWhut" factor.
If you'd like to donate the $5k+ I'd be more then willing to drop one in my miata...
Actually, me & Rob had a fairly long discussion about that. I suggest a 13b, instead. less rotors, more reliability, more availability, and easily as much ability to hit your power goal.
Then I started dreaming about rotary-powered AWD vehicles, and I was no good to anyone for the rest of the day.

The problem is the lack of torque the 13b makes.. maybe if e85 was readily available here I would consider it. But the BE is just too much of a pig to make it a reality.
