Sooo... Few of you know that I have a 67 Chevy pickup, unless you look in my sig. even fewer have seen it. I decided that I'm board and I would show you guys the rust bucket...
Small block, truck 4 speed, 3/4 ton 2WD. 112,000 original miles. 2nd owner!
I got "Papa Smurf" when I was 16 for $650. Ran and drove, but needed a little work from sitting 7 year under a tree. It came with a SB 283 w/a Rochester 2 bbl carb and ran good! But cracked a piston after a couple months. I kept driving it on the cracked piston for a few months after.
Motor #2: Got a 69 Vette 350 (2 bolt main, low end Vette... haha) w/a holly 4 bbl and an Edelbrock intake. That motor was a sad story also. I thought it could rev like a 283 and blew the head gaskets within 3 months. I fixed it but it never run right after that. I did install a set of Hooker headers and 3 Chamber Flowmasters. Sounded cool, but damn it's obnoxious after about 3 miles. The exhaust ends just after the cab... haha
Motor #3: A few years ago I go I picked up a 2000 Vortec GM HO 350 crate motor that had 5K on it. Had an Edelbrock intake and 600 carb, and a few other do dads on it. Was the best motor I have had to this day. She was putting out about 400hp at the time the way we had it setup. Sadly in my stupidity of showing off doing a burnout, I lost traction when I thought I had it and she reved u to about 9000 and I spun 2 rod bearings. I took it to a "good" engine builder and had it rebuilt. Ran good for about 8 months (3000 miles), but always hard started, and then the worst motor blow I have ever seen happened.
-5 bent rods
-1 shattered rod
-2 shattered pistons
-5 broken pistons
-4 bent valves
-damaged cam shaft
-2 holes in the oil pan
-and a nice big hole punched in the block
The builder would not back up his work. I was a bit pissed. This all happened at 0 mph, in my driveway just trying to move my car trailer.
Motor #4: As I took my HO motor apart, I found that little was savable. I kept the complete top end, just had to fix the valves. I found a 2002 Vortec Boat motor. Yep, I got a boat motor! haha! It had some bad valves and I was like, hell, if the bottom end is good, that works for me. I picked it up for $300. It was rated in the boat at 350hp, roller cam, steel crank, and I believe a 4 bolt main. Only problem was because it was a fuel injected motor, I had to install an electric fuel pump... errr.... That has been all my current problems since... But, the final cost was about $350 to put this motor in my truck. I sold the head it came with to get some money back.
Anyway, here is the list of what Papa Smurf has...
