So I had a torn inner boot on a front axle and got a replacement that was a little different than the original.
The replacement axle had no abs tone ring on it and had a much smaller diameter past the oil shield at the hub end. I got a tone ring from the seller and my mechanic installed the axle and said there were no problems.

When I tried to fit the tone ring where I thought it should go there was an incredible large gap. If the oil shield is removed the tone ring would fit there correctly.

My question, what axle did I get and what did I really need? Car is a 00 Legacy GT.

I never use after market axle, Subaru axle is very high quality so I always rebooted it with a good mechanic, had it replaced for a$120 with good$40 parts/$80 labor. Inner passenger's boot always break since it sits next to the catalyst coverter and gets baked. Too bad you threw away a quality axle and now have to deal with this headache.

It's a quality axle, I just think it is the wrong axle for the car. I have seen somewhere a spacer for the ABS tone ring to make it fit this style axle.

I have purchased other axles from this vendor and never had a problem, they rebuild Subaru axles sent in as cores and design and build their own axles for ATVs, electric cars, large industrial machinery and military applications.

The axle I got has the same heft as the axle I replaced, just a different housing at the hub end so the abs ring might not fit right. I'm not sure what my mechanic did as I haven't had the time to get under the car yet.
