Hey guys, this is gonna be a big one.
My name is C-D, and I am an addict.
haha, but in all seriousness, im 22 (as of now) and ive had 4 legacy's since my 18th birthday
1st: 95 Legacy LS wagon (Deep Sapphire Pearl) 4-EAT
2nd: 98 Legacy Outback wagon (Spruce Pearl? i think...) 5-MT
3rd: 90 legacy LS sedan (Rio Red) 5-MT
4th (and current): 99 legacy GT sedan (tuxedo black) 5-MT
This thread is obviously about the current one.
this car started off its progressing life in the hands of Johann Ave, a member on MANY forums under a few usernames (Bad Wagon, maybe something else on here formerly: Girodisc). he bought this car in 2009 and started from there, if you want to know the specifics on everything there is a link to the build thread just below this but i will go over all the mods that are CURRENTLY on the vehicle and probably mention some of the previous mods.
BUILD THREADS

the story with this car for me in short is: i bought a 98 outback almost a year and a half ago and during a snowboarding trip to idaho it kinda hit a guardrail at 60 ish when it was my turn to nap during the drive (not meaning i fell asleep at the wheel, my friend was driving). Johann gave me the deal of a lifetime on this GORGEOUS shell and we swapped the entire outback drivetrain into it.
the last thing i have to say before the intro ends is i know my car isnt 400+ HP and crazy torque, but i have big dreams with this thing. its been there before and it will get back to it, but right now, its my baby and im working on it! so constructive criticism is GREATLY accepted but please dont knock anything that has been done with the car. if you dont like it, there are other threads to read, to each their own and i personally love how its coming!
NOW! THE BIG REVEAL!

just to help some of you out the reasons the FMIC is still on there:
this car has had like 4 different engine/turbo combination setups previously. the FMIC has a custom bracket welded on for this bumper so it was left there for me by Johann so i can boost the car later without having to source another fmic...
also, i did take it off, but the spot looks really dumb with a HUGE hole in the front of the car, so i put it back.
as far as the boost gauge goes i got it in a trade and have plans to boost the car, so i wired it up when i was already in there to install the oil pressure gauge.

thanks man,
i give all the credit in the world to Johann. he basically built my dream car and then upon returning it to daily driver status sold it to me to keep it going with the understanding that i would in ay way possible keep it special. i plan on doing atleast one thing he wished he could have done before he had a new project come up, the H6 build. this car is so much fun when you find some nice road, dial down the suspension and just go for it. its not extremely quick but cmon, as legacy drivers we have realistic expectations about of the EJ25D and they are alright, i mean, you can only realistically do so fast around curves, and this car can obviously do that much.
there is so much i want to do with this car. and i hope everyone keeps enjoying it that way i am, and how i have seen people enjoying it. i get compliments all the time, not just from subaru drivers and my only wish i s could say i had done all this to the car. THIS is my main reason i want to do something BIG for the engine. i want to make it mine and if the body was BUILT BY Johann Ave, then the motor can be by me.
i hope i can do all you guys and especially Johann proud, make this car my own, have fun, win some shows and maybe some auto cross events one day. one day at a time right?
Plans for my weekend!
going to source some exhaust parts to fix 2 small exhaust leaks i have in my midpipe and also even out how my mufflers hang
gonna run up to pick-n-pull tomorrow and see what these 2 new legacy's on the lot have to offer for trunk interior. also going to look for anything else that might be helpful obviously, but thats my main goal
also going to try and source a coil pack, been having cylinder 4 misfires since day 1, bought new plugs and wires last summer and they went away, came back this winter, thinking its the coil getting worse so im gonna find one and swap it out. cheap from P&P
thats about it for now. soon here i have a little exterior mod i might be doing but i want to wait for nicer weather.
also i think i need hub centric rings for those tsw's to get a slightly smoother ride so im looking into some of those
some old pics, just to keep the thread going in that direction, i know i LOVE pics so i might as well post em!

i dont mean to be a dick, but why do i even bother typing out the story for this post? i know the pictures are cool but of all posts the first one is the one to read all the way through. it has all the info
"no name ebay front mount ready for this thing to get BOOSTED
(plans to do an EZ30R build with a "little add-on" in the future, keeping it basic for now, the crazy will come)"
this car has had like 4 different engine/turbo combination setups previously. the FMIC has a custom bracket welded on for this bumper so it was left there for me by Johann so i can boost the car later without having to source another fmic...

i dont get shit for it, ive been in the community for about 3 years, been to BNW, stance wars import meet and PLENTY of local meets. people ask and i explain. no problem. im not gonna cover it up thought cuz it gives me even more reason TO boost it. im actually thinking of having it look something like this when im done with it
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/03/frontendideas2-1.jpg
and like i said, the big gap when its gone (and im assuming if i painted it, being as it would look like a big gap) looks alot worse than me just having to explain that its custom for the car, has been used in the past and is going to be used eventually

Yes, don't be a dick. I've been around awhile too... and I do read.
I followed Girodisc's builds pretty closely, so I'm quite familiar with the different engine setups and wiring tucks and whatnot he undertook.

not trying to get off on the wrong foot with ya, i would have said the same thing if anyone had posted that question, even deadsilvia or redcelica... and they know me and have seen the car in person...
to put this into an upward reply, i will try my best to keep this thing going and as close to Johann's high standards. im slowly working on bringing it back to its full glory and then some. but it takes time on a limited budget. again, i hope you all continue to like the mods and choice i make with this car.
and its good to be back! thanks!

so i added a real short ram to the car a couple days ago, it was having some ROUGH idle issues, i was thinking it could have to do with 2 things
1: when adding the new intake i adapted the valve cover breathers to the smaller diameter hoses that you have to run into the intake, was wondering if this was causing issues, wasnt the case.
2: was thinking because i has to make the breather that comes off the throttle body adapt to going up into the intake instead of going into a 90* post coming off of it that the slight compression of routing the hose might be restricting airflow. (its not bad, not kinked or anything, just kinda smooshed flatter due to routing) is not how i wanted to run it, but i wanted this thing on and i can always fix it up later. well, this wasnt the problem either...
(yes, i reset the ecu once the new intake was installed, gave it EVERY chance i could for it to want to work)
after driving it for 3 days with the crappy idle, bad fuel economy and sounding like a 2 stroke go-kart, i went in there to swap it back to the stock intake and what did i find? one of the sensors (i cant remember if this is the TPS or if its a idle control sensor?) but its directly above the breather coming off the throttle body... well, it wasnt plugged in all the way, MOST the way, but it wasnt snapped in... (FAIL on my part for sure) i think the connection closest to the throttle body was only slightly touching so i found that to be the problem!
NOW the thing runs awesome, idles perfectly, engine sounds superb and there is NOTICEABLE throttle response improvement. PUMPED! so smooth and awesome. also solved a mid rpm power loss i was dealing with, guessing the extra airflow is helping with my air/fuel mix where it was being restricted before. ill know more once i drive with it more and for longer but it seems to have gone away, i like that!
now i just gotta paint the intake tube and replace those couplers and breather hoses with something a little more, matching... and all will be right again! so stoked!

Good job on making it your own. Did the intake made a difference from the plastic to the aluminum?
Where did you find that intake, and is it specific to the legacy or is it adapted from an impreza?
TopScoobLEGO
03-29-2013, 09:41 PM
i got the intake from a guy on craigslist, but its a "cosmo" brand intake. on the site this is a "legacy specific" short ram intake
link is here
http://www.cosmoracing.com/productinfo. ... 6&pid=1562 (http://www.cosmoracing.com/productinfo.asp?cid=226&pid=1562)
i got it brand new in the box from the guy for 80 bucks, he paid 129 a year ago for it
the intake has made some awesome differences, sounds better, idles lower and smoother, throttle response feels better and like i said above it got rid of some mid range bogging i was having. all in all its awesome. cant wait to tweak it a little more and make it look better cuz this thing was WELL worth the 80 bucks

I was gonna do a super short ram on my BE yesterday but I wanted to know something. U know those small air filters for the valve covers? Can I buy 2 of those slap them in the covers and drill a 1/2" hole in the spectre rubber mount thing that would hold the filter? Hole being for the pcv hose... My BE is MAP btw ill add some pics of wtf I'm talking about lol
Grimmrican
03-29-2013, 10:29 PM
Here's the adapter piece
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/03/huhybavy-1.jpg
Now I went and put this right on the throttle body an filter connected to this as well (obviously) I had all 3 hoses just hanging around while I took a test spin. Everything seemed to work awesome and flawlessly. But like my last post I want to know if the small air breathers on the valve covers would work fine.
TopScoobLEGO
03-29-2013, 10:43 PM
you can put those little filters on the valve covers yes, but after alot of research i wouldnt advise it, the air is supposed to be pushed into these valve cover ports by the vacuum created from the intake manifold, basically without that the car isnt operating how it should and you risk wearing your engine down quicker. what i would do is either buy or make a 3" diameter section of piping with 2 connectors for the hoses for the valve covers and maybe a 3rd for the pcv one. run those to the small connector directly after the throttle body and then directly after that the filter the only thing i would worry about is the breather from the throttle body (the biggest one) not being connected to anything, i know mine uses a maf, but mine wouldnt run with that one disconnected. not sure how it would effect yours
TopScoobLEGO
03-29-2013, 10:58 PM
so basically you would be going for something like this
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/
broken down by this
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/03/intake-1.jpg
im just not sure where the map sensor would play in and where you could connect the breather coming off of the throttle body...
TopScoobLEGO
03-29-2013, 11:01 PM
i will say you will adversely effect performance if you are trying to do this to make use of a hood scoop on an N/A car since you will be funneling water into that thing if you ever drive it in the rain. but otherwise, it would probably be awesome
Grimmrican
03-29-2013, 11:26 PM
No good scoop and I'm aware of the heat in the engine but I'm only deleting the torque box. And the diagram u drew is something I was planning only thing is I have 3 hoses and no map sensor that was connected to it. I'll recheck tomorrow. I bought 6' of 1/2" hose so it should be plenty to cut and fit all 3 hoses into the adapter. I just wanted to verify that it would be ok if I went and did this without killing my car for lack of knowledge.
TopScoobLEGO
03-29-2013, 11:36 PM
Yeah I mean it would work but from what I've read there is supposed to be some amount of positive pressure into the valve covers, not just them pulling air, so I personally would avoid it to be safe but if you aren't worried about it you can just use those filters and be ok.
The biggest thing after doing all this is remember to reset your ecu after everything is put on and hooked up. (just unplug the negative for 10 min and you are good) the ecu will adapt to the new numbers after doing this and it should run correctly for ya.
So your car only has 3 1/2" hoses and no 3/4 inch hose coming off the throttle body? Hmmmm must be a post 99 thing...
Grimmrican
03-30-2013, 12:06 AM
Yea I believe the 99 map is diff from the 00 BE. My bro in law has a 99 and immediately I noticed a huge diff between the engines. Well not huge but rather subtle. Also his is a ej25D and mine is a ej251. I'll take pix tomorrow and show u guys.... Well of my engine at least because u guys know what the ej25d looks like lol. And again that's y I was asking if I should put a breather instead of a hose. I wanted to know what the effects are/would be. I'll do a quick rig tomorrow during lunch at work and post it up on here.

yeah. im pretty sure 96-99 ej25d's are basically the same, slightly different layouts but 4 total breathers, 1 maf and thats about it. im pretty sure 00-04 was the whole map sensor switch over.
it'll be cool to see what that looks like, never worked with one before

so i guess thats the map sensor basically right ON the tb?
so i count 3 1/2 inch hoses connecting to the air box, but is that not a larger diameter hose connected to the first "L" tube after the box? in the second to last pic just below and left of the passenger side valve cover breather hose.
thats where i have a bigger hose, right about that same spot. so basically the one in this pic labeled "iac valve to intake"

nice, that should be pretty sweet. i think the ony thing that could be a downfall is the negative effects of pulling air in from the top of a fairly well sealed engine bay, but other than that, the air flow will be RIDICULOUS and hopefully will outweigh the extra warmth
Grimmrican
03-30-2013, 11:47 PM
Well if u look at the pic I posted of the entire engine bay I'm only deleting the torque box and leaving the rest if the tubing in place so it should in theory get plenty of cold air
TopScoobLEGO
03-31-2013, 12:28 AM
err... not really. the LARGE majority of the air that gets to the throttle body with the stock ducting is brought there by vacuum created by the engine, without there being a connection from the ducting to the throttle body you wont get much air flow through that ducting. its not like that cowl thing sitting on top of your radiator support is out in the open, its still behind metal and rubber sealing on the hood so its not going to get much air forced into it. the stock intake ducting is made to take in air from a cooler area, not have it forced into it. thats why N/A engines run on vacuum through the whole ducting where as turbo models only have vacuum from the filter to the turbo, which is why its called being boosted because it has air being FORCED into it.
other people have done what you are trying to do before, so dont let me make you think it wont work. BUT know you may experience slightly less power in warm temperatures. its not like our engine bays are sealed so airflow should be enough, but just know if you do experience less power or worse fuel economy its because that thing is too far north of the warm block and is taking in the warmest of the air in the bay.
and if that does happen, well, i would suggest a hood with a scoop and a diverter so you dont get water into that thing
Grimmrican
03-31-2013, 12:46 AM
What if I got a k&n cone filter and put some duct connector to my stock tubing?? Will I then be sucking in air as normal? Again I'm gonna be experimenting and finding a solution soon. Im low on funds to mod a scoop into my hood or even afford a jdm hood
TopScoobLEGO
03-31-2013, 12:57 AM
you would have to completely enclose the cone from the largest part and have it seal, and at that point, you just have your normal intake back but less clean looking... if i were to say what the best thing to do for added power and the best results it would be to make new strait (no baffles aka those little ripples in the stock couplers) tubing from the air box tot he scoop thing at the front of the engine, then just throw a K&N panel filter back in the stock air box. this will increase air flow, decrease sound baffling and also keep your engine safe. in all actuality you could probably just replace the stock couplers with strait silicone couplers and do the filter and be better off for less money, those stock plastic ducts probably dont have any baffles in them and are probably pretty smooth, so the only things really holding it back are those connectors and the oem air filter
i would say, try this idea you have, but keep everything in tact to revert to stock if it doesnt work out. its a cool idea and its not gonna kill your engine but it might not be beneficial. if this plan were to fail, a real short ram or the adjustments to the stock ducting i mentioned might be a good next idea.

anyway, just wanted to add some updates on what ive been up to
the other day i threw on my tsw 18's and threw these on with them
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m30/sgtfisher/DSCN1830.jpg
these things are LIGHT like almost half the weight of an stock lug. they look a little pinker in some light which is ok but kinda weird, later on if i get wheels that show off the lugs more i will probably order a different set but i like these.
in other news i added a couple pieces of flair to my car
the "O" in mirror kinda skewed during install and im not sure why but its ok, it looks good and it adds character, im honestly not sure how long these will stay on there, its a nice warm day and so im hoping they will spend all day curing and adhering and will stay but they arent as smooth of a vinyl as some i have gotten and so im not sure about the quality... overall, happy though

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/04/DSCN1924-1.jpg
ok, and i know i might get some flak for this but dont worry, i am still gonna get some SLi stickers on there (that is once i find out where to order them... any ideas?)
in the defense of my choice, the group of people i hang out with on Nasioc and in the NWIC section is a really great group of people and for that reason i will ALWAYS be a part of nasioc, there are alot of people who you might not want to deal with on there, i know there are alot i dont want to, but once you weed through them there are a few really cool people, especially locally, that just want what we strive for over here, a fun helpful community... and i love those guys. so in addition to an eventual SLi badge i am now rocking my NWIC badges!
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/04/DSCN1918-1.jpg
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/04/DSCN1917-1.jpg
now on to my most controversial idea yet (OH MY? WORSE THAN POSTING NWIC PICS ON SLi?)
thats right!
so here is the scenario, i have a set of wheels i have been trying to sell for a friend of mine for over a year
20x8.5 +45 in a 5x112. well two days ago i had a crazy idea... instead of spending 700 bucks on wheels, then 600+ on tires and then 15 on hubcentric rings for 18" show/meet/event wheels in the future, why not pick these up for cheap (like around 300), throw some direzzas on them (600), pick up some hubcentric adapters (150 for 4) and be done with it? they would be BIG, showy, concave wheels (which i LOVE) and should look really good albeit HUGE and impractical for anything except shows and meets and stuff.
so im just gonna throw up a rough photoshop i did of them on the car and how they should look, about...
lemme hear some thoughts, opinions on looks and such, i dont want a bunch of "EWW thats GROSS 20's? wtf" whatever, i know the idea is crazy, but i have the means to fit BIG wheels on this car and these could be really cool for shows and such. i know the fitment will work out, the ride will be rough and i will have to be VERY careful when driving around on these so dont get worked up about all that. i just wanna know how you all feel about the looks and such
the final dimensions would be only .5 inches larger in diameter than my current wheel if i ran a 225/30r20 tire, i could run something different but this is what i think my final setup will be after the spacer and all that
20x8.5 +20 225/30r20 with a 1" (25mm) adapter
my current setup is 18x8.5 +35 245/40r18 no spacers. and even with this much tire i could probably come out another inch and only rub on major bumps in the front and no rub in the rear. so i think with a 25mm adapter it would be perfect with a little camber on all wheels just to make the suspension angle be inward as well as up for just that much more clearance.
i would LOVE some ideas for colors for the wheels, they are just plain silver right now, i have been thinking either white or gunmetal, both would look really good on my car but im open to ideas!

Ok well the rims look very nice but the photoshop looks like u have on 22s. Which for me is a def no. And with the 20s u gonna get any lift kuz of the size? But u know what to each his own. It's ur car and u do what ever u feel like u think is cool. I'm not gonna hate on it lol
TopScoobLEGO
04-08-2013, 06:00 PM
i dont think think they look anywhere near 22's the wheels on the car orginally in the pic were 18's and these are only slightly larger when i put them on, also because of the slight stretch of tire and lower profile tire they will look huge but the amount of lift to height of the car will only be 1/4 inch as the diameter of the tire with this setup would only be 1/2 inch bigger
as far as fitment and lifting the car more, no, i have PLENTY of clearance in my wheel wells for this size wheel and tire, basically i would be going for a tire fitment look (half inch-3/4 inch gap between the tire and fender. not tucking tire other than the slightly stretched part of it looking tucked because of the stretch inward. and not going for the "hella flush" look where im basically touching rim to fender. thats not good at all...
TopScoobLEGO
04-08-2013, 06:03 PM
i would say the bottom of my PS pic looks a little wrong, there would definitely be more tire down there than that mostly because in this pic my tires were kinda low on air in the first place... but the rest looks proportionally correct for a 20" wheel

That is the stock intake from a 95ish legacy l. Picked it up from pick & pull when I had my outback. as far as working, its fine, but i got a real short ram (aluminum one) and its much better, louder and my car idles better with it. i would say this intake does what it is supposed to do, lets air flow moderately and decreases sound output from your manifold a little like they are supposed to. just wasnt a fan, wanted the real intake sounds

Cool I will have to keep my eyes out for one of those next time I am at the wreckers! I have to deal with smog every 2 years and hate having to change stuff out. That piece should look stock enough to pass visual, cleanup the eng compartment and maybe be better on the flow?! If I don't like it, it should be easier to swap from a better intake to that one, so I can avoid having to remount the torque box before smog.
As for the wheels, I live in Oakland and see too much of the Hyphy/Sideshow cars every day. That combined with being an old school import guy, preferring deep dish wheels to flush style. I grew up with my Dad building Bugeyed Sprites, Midgets, Lotus Super 7s, Alphas, etc in the garage & I used to race my 510s in local autocross. IMHO, your car went from looking like a serious street machine to a parking lot queen when the 20s went on. No insult intended, but seems to take away from the car, but it also depends on which age/culture you want to appeal to.
TopScoobLEGO
04-09-2013, 02:29 PM
well the car was never a street machine, it was built to be a track car for autocross and win shows as a VIP style body. so parking lot queen actually fits the bill, im not offended by the observation at all, but if my car has 400Hp and can win best legacy at any given import show up here in the seattle area, ill take it...
i personally HATE deep dish wheels, just not my style at all, i would take a meaty tire on a good concave wheel over a lip ANY day. i think the only reason i went for the wheels i have on now is they were cheap, have good tires, look good on my car and incorporate concave spokes and a lip into one rim. that being said, these wheels will never make it as show wheels for me. they have curbing on 3 wheels from previous owners, one of the tires has a small chunk taken out of the sidewall and the clearcoating has fractures in it on the lips. so basically yeah, i just am going for these as show wheels, nothing to be driving around the city or anything, just for shows. these tsw's are good street wheels.
the look he had going in this pic was amazing. i love the fitment to the tires and the full wheel wells these were 18x9.5+15 with 245/40/18's
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2011/04/LegoNew59-1.jpg
but i also liked the look he had with these, they were 19's im not sure of the width but they were running a 265/30zr19
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2010/09/sexy10-1.jpg
again, its not gonna be an everyday thing, just like him running the 19's, he did it for a photoshoot and would have done it for shows but not for every day.
anyway, the whole point to this is i already have the wheels and they would be a much cheaper route and very cool to try out for much cheaper than buying a whole new set AND tires.

I think the 18's are a good look. Allows you to put alittle more meaty tires in there. i think that makes it look more aggressive rather than the vip look. That's just my opinion though..lol

well i officially ordered some headers today, since this ej25d will never be a "performance" engine i went with sound, picked these up off ebay for 150 bucks
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/04/T2eC16Vw0E9szNZISIBQvpzVBDw60_3JPG-1.jpg
also picked up some heat wrap for the header in black
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/04/T2eC16VHJHYE9nzpeCFBRTQScYDQ60_3JPG-1.jpg
and finally, i am going to head over to carter subaru and try and get some nice gaskets for this setup.
ALSO
this should be here today or tomorrow
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/04/T2eC16RHJIE9qSO8m0zBRSJ6NkThw60_3JPG-1.jpg
and i am going to redo my midpipe and part of my axleback.
currently, the exhaust looks like this
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/04/20121007_144328_8801-1.jpg
where we had to add a small section of pipe right after the cats there are small gaps in the welds so leaks are there, need to be fixed. so i am just going to redo the whole midpipe and part of the axle back
here is my plan.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/04/exhaustoption4-1.jpg
just need it to be basic, doesnt have to look pretty just has to tuck up into the body more than it does currently (this)
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/04/DSCN1748-1.jpg
so i think after all this it should be much better, no leaks, no scrapes/pings while driving, and that boxer rumble. should be amazing. very pumped!

still gotta get better gaskets, the ones that came with these headers are udder GARBAGE. one came out of the box mangled... not that i even want them, but sad this is the quality of them, seller will get correct feedback, overall they look like good quality headers, but the gaskets are definitely SUB PAR

ok so big update i guess, so my uel's yesterday, today i sprayed them with high heat paint and wrapped them, i didnt know i was gonna have so much left over so i played it safe and 2 of the header tubes have about an inch gap from the flange to where the wrap starts, unfortunate, but i dont think it will matter much...
i also picked up new manifold gaskets and a quality flange gasket for the header to cats connection.
pics of all of this!
well, i wasnt aware they tested these things ON cars before they shipped them out, but oh well, its gonna get used right?

meh, i dont think the header was "used" per say, it doesnt have any signs of on car application, just like they actually used an engine to test it for leaks... weird...
o'reilly's had them, like 10 different sizes and all that, do you need some? i could go grab them, they are cheap...
mine is oversized, made to fit bigger applications, its not actually stock sized but its what i needed for this header. they had the oem fitment as well. lemme know, i can go grab em before work if you need em!

well, tomorrow brings an oil change, (10w30 valvoline max life, bosh oil filter and a duralast pcv valve) and POSSIBLY the install of my STi roof vane, ive been waiting a while to do this thing, it just makes me scared to even think of drilling into the hard to fix portions of my car, but alas, it may be done tomorrow, i just need to balls up, stare it down for a few hours and make sure its strait and then just do it. i will take pics, do a little write up on here for anyone thinking of it, not positive yet how i am going to get the spots for the holes aligned perfectly yet, i have thought of using the template/gasket, sticking it lightly to the vane and more to the car side, lining it all up and pushing down real good, then just drilling through the template/gasket holes and hoping that should be right... scares me though

Also, use a center punch, or in lieu of one of those, take just the drill bit and tap it with a hammer to put a slight dimple in the sheet metal where you want to drill. Helps a ton.

ok so basically we took tape and made markings from body lines (and one defrost bar) to get an idea of exactly where to line everything up
i put small pieces of tape on the vane side of the gaskets and aligned them on the vane, then removed the sticky side of the gasket, lined everything up and pushed down hard. pulled the vane off and BANG perfect alignment and guide for drilling.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/05/IMAG0284-1.jpg
luckily there is this sweet little access hole in the c pillar and the vane lines up just about perfectly with this (i put mine slightly higher up to get the look i wanted and its pretty close to the top of the access hole but still accessible with a socket driver and after bending the edge of the access hole out a little bit)
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/05/IMAG0285-1.jpg
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/05/IMAG0286-1.jpg
i used a smaller drill bit first, drilled directly center and then followed up with the right size for the bolts.
i had to use a slightly longer bolt for the top mounting position but i had those left over from my intake mounting bracket i never used and the threading was right so BANG fit perfectly, everything sealed up well but i added a ring of silicone sealant for good measure.
here are the final pics, i kinda failed at taking pics throughout but i was kinda scared i was gonna mess up and there was gonna be no going back... well all is good. pretty strait forward.

alright its update time...
first off im gonna give you the current affairs and then the back story...
i have a desperate love hate relationship with exhaust. i LOVE the tones my car produces, i HATE that i scrape everywhere with my car being so low, i LOVE being easily identified as a subaru by the sound of my engine, i HATE exhaust that distorts the sound inside my car. |
that being said. here we are
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/10/IMAG06771-1.jpg
here is where i am currently (yes, laugh if you want but my car is louder than yours! bwahahaha. bad and good)
so now the story.
my car for a long time has been very janky when it comes to exhaust..
when i got it:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/10/DSCN17471-1.jpg
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/10/DSCN17481-1.jpg
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/10/DSCN0914-1.jpg
not bad hanging, but bad height and it also rubbed my gas tank and when hung to not touch the tank it knocked on the frame by the passenger exhaust tip.
this is what it looked like before modification... err... more modification...
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/10/IMAG052511-1.jpg
what i wanted to do was install a y pipe and make the dual exhaust more functional... well once i got into it it got pretty messed up. very aggravating and i didnt know how to weld well (still dont but im getting better...)
well, i did, but i had to remove the mufflers... and also, i was running out of time before wcss so when i tac'd the right tip kinda slanted i just said F it all and went. here is what it looked like.
http://s100.photobucket.com/user/sgtfisher/media/IMAG05291.jpg.html
so comes to our current state (kinda) after the drive to portland, then to longview and then back, my exhaust took some scrapes and bumps but it held up (sounded awesome too!) but about a week after wcss i saw that the driver's side came off the hanger, put it back on and then for three days had to do it when i got to work and when i got home, FINALLY i realized one of my welds had snapped and was rotating on a tac weld, crazy it even held.
anyway i re welded it in a hurry and hoped it would hold... and it did... for 2 days until i was driving back from renton and scraped bad on a metal connector on the freeway just after the seneca exit. BANG SCRAPESSSSSSSSS all the way off the freeway at mercer street. got off, pulled over, pulled the hanging exhaust from the y pipe back on both sides that had broken free and threw them in the trunk. re hung the midpipe and went home. PISSED
the next day i got a hanger system to keep the y pipe higher, it doesnt scrape much anymore except with major bumps.
so yeah thats where i am. the first pic. at this point i dont know what i want to do, what i really need to do it redo the whole thing from the middle of the mid pipe back to the y pipe with a slight s section to make it fit right and then redo the y pipe back with either mufflers or just the old tips. i am very cool with either one, in fact i would love a pair of n1 style mufflers but i would have to do some cutting to make it work. and then come fitting the y pipe to the mufflers cuz it would be pretty cramped, i have a fair amount of room up and down back there but not front to back.
anyway thought i would let you all know about my crazy exhaust troubles... ha haaaa
now, to leave it with a happy note. just before WCSS 15 i installed my brand new STi floor mats!
this was pre shampoo'd carpet so its dirty but i got that cleaned up for wcss!
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/10/IMAG04621-2.jpg
very happy with them. they look great in the car, dont move much and really make the car look better with the doors open!

got a couple of these in the mail to get installed on lego, should look good and quiet it down a bit even without the silencers in them. so next week begins my modifications to make my current exhaust better and get it ready for these to go in. ill be removing the entire exhaust, mapping out the route i want, cutting and welding it all off the car, back to the y pipe and then ill have a shop connect the y pipe to the mufflers since thats the hardest part do do perfectly. should come out nice, fingers crossed but i think so and im pumped for it

they look pretty good to me, in the next 2 days at some point ill "mock" one up and snap a shot, but i think they are gonna look awesome and help my car be more acceptable on the streets.
wont be able to get them welded up and all that good stuff until next week. hoping it wont cost too much for a muffler shop to bend some pipe and weld it in between the y pipe and the new mufflers and add some hangers... hopefully
ill post up a video tomorrow of my current exhaust and one after its done. hopefully it will be a world of difference!

They are isc n1 coils, not some super cheapo eBay coils or raceland/megans. I actually love them for what they are. They ride well for how low I am and how I have to have the dampening set to not rub and scrape. They look great, were extrememly easy to set up and adjust and they ride as nice as bc br's do if not better. I really like them for what they are but with my set up (very auto x specific) driving this thing on coils every day kinda sucks. The ride is harsh and we have a lot of crappy roads here. That's why I'm hoping to get a second car to daily soon so Lego doesnt have to get beat up driving around the city all the time anymore. Its not the coils fault, they ride fine, they just aren't right for my streets.
Bottom like, I paid 950shipped and they are WELL worth that.

Thanks for the quick reply. I was going off of the color as a reference. I understand you on coils and daily driving having done stupid low (for no good reason other than looks) it does wear off in novelty pretty quick as roads here aren't the greatest either.

Ha ha yeah, the performance gain was awesome, I can take normal intersection turns at 30-40 if I want to and don't lose grip, its fun but the bangs and rattles get old driving the same bad roads to work and back every day. Luckily my car isn't THAT LOW compared to some people but I can't imagine going any lower. My exhaust just has never been in a place where I could without it just being a terrible time... Ha ha

got an update finally and even more to come next week!
a few months back while tightening down a lug nut, i sheared it off down past the splines for the socket to grab... ugh, ive been running one lug sheared like that since, until tonight!
this was after drilling/chiseling/punching it to try and get it to chip off

today i got a bi-metal hole saw and went at it...
apparently the one i got was too big and drilling through it broke off all the teeth, it had to be the fact that i wasnt straight on. oh well

next is the momo, got a V7 STi wheel on ebay for 140 shipped, has a little bit of a scuff at the 11 o clock position, but oh well, it was the best condition one under 200 bucks and its just a use smudge so oh well, ill live. gonna look good!

What is the width and offset? They will look great on your car. Man I had a set of Drag wheels on the wagon. They looked great. Could never have them balance properly and always had a vibration at high way speed.
TopScoobLEGO
02-15-2014, 12:15 PM
Ha ha, exactly, I didn't know how you guys would take it... I know so many people who just bag on xxr but don't know crap about what they speak of.
And ps, this car has major plans to become a racecar again... But not a circuit car or a drag car. Just autox which is actually what it was originally made for . but yeah, I'm with ya. I really like these and they will do exactly what I want for looks. Eventually I will probably find a set of light wheels in like a 17/9 for autox but that's a ways down the line
As of now. Very happy with my purchase. These wheels are sick

for anyone wanting to talk crap about XXR wheels... well you can hold it in... ive read it all already... ill take my chances.
Yeah there's nothing wrong with them at all, very affordable. I've had the xxr527 in the beginning and had the 530's (9.75+25) for about 2 years. It's mostly when people overly stretch tires on em and of course it will be the wheel that will go.
Wheels are 18x8.75 +20 with 245/40 tires
I'm wondering how come you didn't get the 9.75+20 width since your car is basically set for aggressive wheel. I believe the previous owner had on the mb battles which were 9.5+15. Great choice though, have you seen the xxr next year line up?
TopScoobLEGO
02-15-2014, 05:33 PM
AGS, they are making my room smell awesome! Ha ha
I went with the smaller for a few reasons.
1, biggest one, the retailer I found don't offer them in that size and also in white. I bought these for 1189 shipped with tires and they came that color so I didn't pay extra for powder coating or anything.
2, I didn't want to have to stretch my tires anymore than this and when johann drove on the 9.5's he ran more stretch. I wanted my meaty sidewalls.
3, I love the look of those mb's but they sat wider than I wanted them to. The rim its self stuck out almost half an inch past the flare. Not my thing. These things are gonna stick out plenty far, fill my flares and make me happy all the while still being a slightly skinnier tire size thats easy to find and fit.
Lastly. I do still daily drive my car. The one bridge to get to my work has terrible indents from busses and cars driving it a lot. I noticed when going from 17x7.5' s to 18x8’s my car tends to sit right on the edges width wise and causes me to never be able to be fully in or out of the indents. This would only get worse with the wider wheels so I went with these. The last one is more of a personal preference than anything else but it played into my choice. I think almost 9” wide is gonna be plenty to keep my wheels on the ground and get the power down too... Ha ha, I had a hard enough time getting my 8" wide tsw's to slide in slush in a parking lot... so these should be fine in the spring and summer I would rhink . :)
Pumped to put them on. They are gonna look so good! I also got some titanium chrome muteki sr48 lugs I'll post up pics of tonight. Wanted the non chrome but they actually look awesome.

I got xxr530s, 17x8.25 +35 I believe with 245/40/17 and they fit great, I wanted to get +25 but I didnt want to spend the money to flare the car yet, so more wide will come later but xxrs are awesome for the price, I havent had a single problem

Yeah, the stuff I was referencing had to do with horror stories of people's xxr's exploding and destroying braking and suspension components... I should have known you guys would be much more level headed about it... Those people who had it happen were going stupid speeds on streets they obviously didn't know well and ended up hitting potholes at 45+ on low low pro tires... Of course you risk breaking them at that point but I've got meaty tires and I don't hut potholes like that very often much less at high speeds... I'm happy with mine they loom awesome and they feel strong... Not worried at all

so today was a good day!
went on a parts adventure looking for parts for my buddy's 95 impreza coupe. we are doing a facelift on it as its a v1/2 front end. going for the 97 look with a flat hood and newer grille and headlights
BUT we came out on top soooooo gooooood!
we first hit up lynnwood pick n pull
he found nothing unfortunately but i found a couple pieces i needed.
got a drivers side vent cover to replace the one missing a bunch of tabs and it wont stay in... a
also got a replacement passenger rear window switch surround piece to replace one like above...
THEN we went to Campbell Nelson Auto Wrecking Arlington
(SIDENOTE! GO THERE! THEY ARE CLOSING AND ARE LIQUIDATING THEIR INVENTORY! MY STORY WILL EXPLAIN JUST HOW GOOD!)
so we will start out of order on this, skipping the first part cuz that was the best...
after the first deal that happened we asked if they had any late 90's imprezas out back and they said they did and we were free to go check em out
after walking the whole lot and looping back i spotted a PRESTINE V4 grille for my buddy, very excited all that... then i found an H6 3.0 engine cover! some may know my plans so they will better understand why this is cool for me. im excited to try and make this a very clean looking engine bay
cover, very dirty and will need a respray but for 10 bucks... i could make it wall art and be fine...
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m30/sgtfisher/sgtfisher011/DSCN2926.jpg
next after a bit of just looking around i found a couple sets of leather door inserts. ended walking out with 4 full cards for 10 bucks a piece so if anyone needs parts off of them (handles, rear speaker grilles or the cards themselves (one or two do have some nicks but not bad if yours are really bad) let me know and i will get them to you for free before i throw them out in a few days!
what i got off of them
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m30/sgtfisher/sgtfisher012/DSCN2925.jpg
ok now for the fun part.
for months now i have been toying with having a second trunk with a spoiler on it and of all the oem ones the ones i really like are the RS coupe spoiler and the 00-04 sedan spoiler. well, today i walked in and was looking around their table of parts in the building and BANG, 3rd gen sedan spoiler catches my eye... bought it, didnt even think, especially when the guy let me name my price on it! i wont say what i paid but it was half of 50 bucks before tax! HAHAHAHAHAHA so tonight i got right to installing it on my spare trunk!
ive been waiting so long to see if this will fit and now, well...

it sits a little weird because of the shape of the trunks being a bit different but it fits and it looks pretty sweet. the color is going to end up the trim color of my sideskirts and roof vane. should be awesome! so pumped to have a winged option when i want it!
tuesday the wheels go on and she gets a good wash! ill have pic up asap!

just finalized a deal today on a full 03 WRX drivetrain from the clutch to the axles for the car and am currently working on a deal on an EZ30R that needs headgaskets (never overheated, they knew they were leaking, took it apart and then found a donor engine with less miles) so im working on that! so pumped. going to run it N/A til after i move out of my house and get a new place to do a sweet Kompressor build! awwww yeah! getting excited!

ok so here is where we are at.
guy with the engine stopped responding, apparently he was too lazy to take a pallet to ups and have them ship it... dummy. could have made some extra cash... whatever so the search continues for an engine.
the trans deal is finalized though i still dont have it, my buddy has it at his house.
the car is sitting at my grandparents right now under cover with no engine or trans but im working on it.
i took the engine and trans and swapped them into my 98 Outback sport and its awesome.
basically lego is just waiting on the parts to be sourced and then i will be doing all the work i can do to get the car running with the wrx trans i sourced and an ez30R hopefully. though its looking harder and harder to do. might have to modify my plan a bit, not sure how its gonna go yet

Large part of why I removed it was purely to extend the life of it. It has a few bent fins and I don't want more until its actually in use

I say ditch the ss oil feed line and spend the 8 bucks on the factory hard line. It is so much easier and looks way cleaner.

nah, i got it for 10 bucks new with hardware, i like it a lot more, i dont think the factory one looks cleaner at all IMO.
how is it easier?

I tried going to the dealer to get hardlines for a TD04 and a VF11, each line was $100. No, it is not $10 for one.

there is going to be some work that needs to be done, the inlet touches my coolant crossover so i need to see if i can get something to work there
also, neither the 20g fuel lines nor my 22e fuel lines clear the inlet so im going to cut and flare the lines close tot he rails and run rubber lines so i can move them to work around the inlet and coolant crossover
im going to have to weld an o2 bung into my up pipe.
my buddy is going to help me source some red top injectors for this build.
im having trouble confirming the right timing belt kit to get. i know i need a DOHC kit but i keep finding kits that have the right parts but cant confirm fitment (using a 96 EJ25d as the fitment) or ones that confirm fitment as a 96 ej25d but dont have the right tensioner...
any insight?
pretty soon here i will be getting all the gaskets and the timing kit and putting this beast together. im very excited!
just for laughs, check out how my timing belt and tensioner were when i just took this thing apart. not a lot of oil in there so leaking isnt an issue really, but the belt should not do this...
im very lucky this thing didnt let go when i was driving it... body of car had 225k on it when i got it, would love to know how long ago this was done... probably 100k ago...

wow. well, it has been a WHILE! things have changed a TON! all the stuff i last updated with has now been put in a lifted impreza coupe project i am doing so now its been time to get serious on the legacy! you guys ready for this?
first off, picked up a 3.3 liter H6 from a 92 SVX, OH WHAAAAAAAT? REALLY? YUP, its happening! my room mate had an extra one so i bought it and its going down! the engine i built above has been transferred to another build and is going to be used but this lego is getting an h6!

now, i previously had an 03 trans in this thing. which we all knew would blow up, i ended up selling it and what do you know, i ended up getting another one as payment for putting a new trans in a friend's car. it had a bad bearing in it which has now been replaced and in doing so replaced the whole rear shaft section with a 3rd gen legacy one making it 1:1 so i can run a 3.9 LSD in the car. sweet! its still gonna break, but sweet! haha itll do for a bit, then ill build the one i really want.

last part for now, i also picked up a nice black harness bar that will eventually go in the lego, which means harnesses arent far behind.
the wiring is my biggest hold up, i dont want to cut up my stock harness in case in the future i want to do a different swap or something so i am making jumper harnesses between the ecu plugs and between the engine and body plugs, its a real pain, but its going to be nice when its done. may be some time before its finished, but it will all be worth it.

EG33 Is gonna be sweet! Congrats! Hopefully the jumper harness works out good, I'd post info if you can on here. I'm sure a bunch of people would love to see what you figure out. EG33 Is such a untouched gem in the subaru engine world imo.
Wing looks nice :)

thanks tyler! i will post things as they happen, the closer this thing is to running the more i will post, its just been a very slow process the last year or so as i have found the actual parts i want/need and am working toward the real goal! once its all said and done and works i will also include the spreadsheet on how to make said jumper harnesses for anyone to use!
