Towing a car transporter

I need to transport a non-running SVX for a distance of about 120 miles. I'm considering hiring a car transporter trailer and hitching it to our Legacy.

I don't know the maximum towing weight for a legacy. Do you think it is capable - if I'm careful? Is it better to use the low range for towing?

I have a 95 with a 2.2L and a manual transmission. I can't find anything in the owner's manual, which is probably why you're asking :-D
I'd say 1500 lbs safely, but don't quote me. It also depends on what towing system you have (I have draw-tite, a brand that our dealer installs). I'm assuming you have an automatic transmission, so you'll want to keep the gearing low to keep the transmission cooler. I'm not a professional, but that's the word on the street. :wink:

Thanks for the reply. I've decided not to risk it. The SVX weighs over 1600kg plus the weight of a trailer makes about 2.5 metric tons.

I'm sure the legacy could pull it, for a while. But I don't want to risk damaging it. I'll hire a big pick up or something.

My transmission is a 10 speed manual. ie. 5 gears dual range.

That may not be a great idea since you should plus a car that weight more then the tailer and the car put together you could blow the engine in your Legacy when i had to move my 98 GT we used a Ford 250 desal and it was still stagling to haul my car

My Subaru dealer said the max you can safely tow with a 2.2 Legacy is 1400kg.

1400kg= ~3086lbs. I was shooting a little low, I guess. That's kinda beefy for a 4 cyl.

When I lived in CO I put a U-haul class 2 hitch on my 90 AWD Auto legacy wagon. I pulled cars on a dolly almost every day and never had a problem. I towed my 88 Cherokee 4X4 2 hours through the CO hills and she didn't even act like there was anything behind her.

Think about it. IF you are going to tow something that weighs more than your vehicle it's fine if you follow a few simple rules. Expect longer off the line, turn the OD off untill you get up to speeds over 50ish, it will take you longer to come to a stop... and know the terain you are going. (hills and such)

Know the limits but break them if you can do it safely.

I should have listened to my advice as I towed a 99 Dodge grand caravan down Wadsworth in Lakewood on a very, very, very snowy night and it was the scariest ride I have ever had in my entire life. Thank god the streets were empty.

That's why my other car is a Dodge 2500 with the Cummins turbo. It pulled my 98 Legacy back to DC from OH no problem. Brings a smile to my face every time I pass a powerchoke on a hill or at the pumps.

im my cars younger days it pulled 2 jetskis with seemingly little trouble....it seems to me like if youre very carefull you could do it....especially if youre not having to climb any hills or doing a lot of stopping and starting
