So i sold my legacy turbo and bought a 2000 rs to replace it. Although i did love the legacy i got a really good cash offer on it and really its just not the same as the coupes. I had many imprezas before swapped and unswapped and i think with this one i will try turboing the na motor and see what happens. It will be my first time turboing an na motor and its kinda more of an experiance thing and if i blow it ill just turbo swap it :)
here is a link to my legacy journal http://www.sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php ... 51#p317151 (http://www.sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=26462&p=317151#p317151)

second saturday on ownership i did the timing belt, all the idler rollers and tentsioners (tensioner was knoking and af first i seriously thought it was rod knock!! all good now tho), installed a turbo waterpump so i can run sti stock exhaust manifold, stripped out the interior completly for some serious cleaning, orderd a bunch of parts to add to the list of parts needed to turbo, and got my back glass removed and reinstalled cause it was ungluing from a previous shotty job.

Plans are simple. Install my 6 speed swap, 4/2 pots, turbo this motor and push it untill the enevetable will happen. Then look for something to swap in.

Got a few hours to play around after work. Mostly more cleaning but the headliner was really dirty so I made it black. I think it looks awsome.

so i had finally finished cleaning the interior. the interior was very very nasty/smelly and the back top part of seat was ripped out of its mounts and bent down. took me like 4 evenings and probably a total of like 6 hours. i had every interiors piece apart and i cleaned everything separately. i pressure washed the carpet and had all the seat covers off the foam and machine washed. i wish i took some before pictures but here is what i have. interior now looks amazing and smells even better.

Was hoping to get a lot dont with the turbo setup today but I decided first I need to do the rear brake pads on my truck. 20 min job right? WRONG. 4 trips to o reailly's and almost 4 hours later the brakes were done. Go to auto parts and tell the bro I need REAR pads. He gives me fronts and im on my way. Come home and start taking things apart. And notice pads were way way wrong. Turns out bro gave me fronts. Oh well. Well since rotors look incredibly bad I decide to replace them too. They were frozen on and took one heak of a beating to come off. Go and get new parts at store and get back to it. Every singel fin was frozen in. Every single bolt was rusty and needed to be wrestled with. 1 caliper was completly frozen and after geting pissed I decided I would decompress it no matter what happened and gave it a beating of its life. Needless to say I broke the piston. Anyways that was by far the most frusturating brake job I ever ever did. After all this I did manage to get a little done with the turbo setup. I noched the subframe and dont like it. Evetually ill get a turbo subframe. Also didnt like the mounting position of the turbo with the stock uppipe so I will be making custom up and downpipes to mount it a bit turned and a bit to the side.

Add how it it would sit with stock plumbing. I didnt like it at all. So close to manifold and to much crap in the way. Amd this is actually pushed back and flexed the stock flex joint as much as possibly. It would be even closer with the downpipe installed

What will you use for engine management?

slavik.86
04-08-2013, 12:35 AM
Nothing. Im only gonna run about 6-7psi. Ill be using a voltage clamp to trick the map sensor and a vortech fuel managment unit. Its a raising rate secondary fuel pressure regulater and raises the pressure under boost. Ill monitor this setup with the wideband and see see how it goes. This whole turboing an na motor is kinda just an experiment for me. Although I dont wanna blow up my motor and will try doing this right but if I do eventually blow it then ill either build a bottom end to take boost and run some sort of engine managment or just end up swapping. Either way im having fun :)

Ended up bringing the turbo down a tad cause it wasnt clearing the tmic. And rotated it a tad more. Pics later of this. Welded threw my uppipe and first part of down pipe. Welded a nipple for oil drain in the oil pan. Ordered 100' of heat wrap.
Bought a ebay knockoff cobb style cbe for $80 locally.

Final position of the turbo. I welded threw all the exhaust and sprayed with high heat paint and once again test fitted everything. Now u just have to wait for all the gaskets, silicone intercooler hoses and y pipe, oil feed line, heat wrap, and a few other things to come in the mail. Then I can assemble everything and see how bad I screwed everything up ha ha.

Today I mounted all the exhaust permenantly, rab oil feed and oil drain, ran coolant, installed fmu, and a ton of little things.
Flipped the fuel filter bracket and dropped it down low to mount the fmu right above it.

Also, I hate you for that being your personal garage.

Brought it out of the dungen today. Let it idle for a good half hour, let the heat wrap smoke a bit, and adjusted a few things. Still need to install the voltage clamp before I test drive and get it into boost. Have to much going on and working extra hours so ill probobly have to do that tomorrow :(

Well I didnt hook up my boost gauge yet so I dont no for sure. Its on wastegate pressure so if the seller didnt lie about the actuator I bought it should only be 5-6 psi of boost. Ill install gauges tomorrow, hopefully, and no for sure.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/04/20130418_182951_zps0e9dad02-1.jpg

And all wrapped up and finished.

Yesterday she was running weird in boost so today I swapped out whatever spark plugs were in it for wrx ngk plugs. Runs even better then at first :)
Had tons on fun (besides clutch slippage) untill a coolant line from the heater core to the turbo started pissing coolant. So I parked it. Tomorrow ill change coolant line and hopefully finally install my gauges. Overall this car makes me smile every time and I think after I swap the tranny and wont have clutch slippage it will be even funner :)

All the little bugs worked out, installed wideband in a temporary location so I can monitor my afr's, let it idle for hour+ to make sure all is ok, drove it for 60+ miles issue free. Afr's are on target and all is great except for mad clutch slippage. Orderes a sti exedy clutch and its going back under the knife next week. 6 speed, r180, 4/2 pots, sti rack with subframe will all be going in. Also need a clever spot for my gauges. Any ideas anyone?

Great work. I like the speed in production. Did my mechanical in 2.5 weeks between repairing customer's cars.

Have you looked into remapping your ECM to control the timing and knock? It may be possible without a "piggyback". How many plugs on your ECM?

3 plugs. From what I understand you need a piggyback or a stand alone to really tune. Would be nice if I was wrong lol

Got the rear all done today. Gd rear subframe, wider gd lateral links, wrx sway, r180 sti rear diff, r180 rear axles, gc8 type ra rear hub assembly, 2 pot rear brakes.

Thicker r180 axle compared to the rs r160's. Also a little shorted because the sti diff is bigger and wider

So I recieved my clutch today, got the flywheel resurfaced, and started mating the tranny to engine. Now let me start off by saying ib have done many many 5 speeds alone. Iv done six speeds with helpers. I knew it was going to be a task and wow working this piece of monster alone is a task. I had to drop the sub frame and do all sorts of crazy things. Had to stop to go to work but I will continue once I get back and hopefully have her all mated tonight.

Dang, how did I miss this?! It's AWESOME

I would only offer you a few things to help and they're very simple:

- 12:1 is pretty high for the FMU, you could likely safely drop that to 4:1 or 6:1 with no problems, and possibly a bit more power.
- 6psi is pretty much the limit for your stock pistons (That's a phase II, ej251 right?). So where you have it now is pretty much all you're gonna get out of it (*safely*) . When it comes time to replace the block, you have a really cool option of swapping in an ej257 block into your ej251 heads with minimal modification.
- I used 1-step colder plugs with a .28-.30 gap for my spark and it made the thing beast as hell in the top end (.76 trim T4 turbo); I noticed a drop in pull when I went back to normal plugs (for diagnostic reasons)
- << Is super jealous of your 6-speed swap :smt023 :smt023

Again sweet build man, I'm rooting for completion!

Thanks for all the advice garrison. Once i get the car functional and clutch broken in ill log a bit with my wideband and try getting as lean as i can safley go. I couldnt log before due to clutch not holding. Ill be looking more into your journal.
Didnt do anything with the care today but I did pick up a borla hush axle back that im gonna weld on. The fart can I have now is just to loud for me. Might also weld in a resinator. Also pucked up a used clutch master cylinder that im hoping will solve my bleeding problems and bought ball joints so I should be back on track tomorrow.

Got a master cylinder for the clutch. Replaced mine and still no luck bleeding. Replaced the slave and bled just fine :)
Also bled my brakes with the help of my wife. Had to make a hybrid steering column link since the sti steering rack had a different spline count. Good thing I had a spare sti link laying around. Ordered a few needed parts from the dealers and will come wensday so I cant drive the car till then :(

Need to grab some gear oil tomorrow and fill it up. Also gonna do an alingment and hook up the e brake cable and she will be ready for the road :)
Oh ya and i also welded on a borla hush axleback that I picked up over the weekend. The car is so much quieter amd sounds so much better. Cant wait.to hear it under load.

Soooo.. wraped it all up this evening after work. Stop by pia to ask what fluid they recomend for the sti gear box. They told me they only use eneos amd they swore by it. And from what I understand u dont really wanna mess around with fluids for the 6 speed so I ended up dropping $100 on fluid for the tranny and rear end
But the cool part is one of my front end links was broken so I thought id ask em if they have any lying around they wouldnt mind selling me and they hooked it up free.
Came home. Fill up my fluids. Tied up a few loose ends. Did a boss alingment at home amd went driving around. All is awsome and great. New clutch is a little chattery but needs to be broken in so that was expected.

The g way to do an alingment ;-)
Set up a string, get a fine ruler that reads mm amd straighten everything out. I also have a camber tool but that is a top secret device. Camber is at about -2ยบ give or take all they way around and I zeroed out all the toe as much as possible. Drives perfectly straight.

Decided that na turbo is not really as fast as I had hoped and runs incredibly lean when boosting in 4th 5th and 6th. I feel like this set up isnt all that safe and cant do anything to make it faster. Since I dont wanna spend $1000 plus on a stand alone I decided to buy this!!!

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/05/20130508_190942_zps2178990e-1.jpg
Its a rolled over 06 wrx that I started tearing into already. I will keep the motor and wiring for the rs and sell off the rest. It is a ej255 motor. 2.5 turbo with avcs. It is basicly the same motor as a sti motor with minor differances and just as capable. Only problem is that one of the cam gears broke in the accident and caused valve damage :(
Ill have to the the heads refreshed. Oh well i think in the end it will still be worth it. Ill have a much faster and more reliable car.

Decided I didn't like the amount of leakage I was getting from the leak down test so I decided not to mess around. Tore it apart today and dropped the heads off to get them inspected, lapped, cleaned, repaired if necessary. There was no piston to valve contact but Id rather just get everything done right the first time. I'm not going to be messing with the bottom end. It felt really smooth and the crosshatching is still looking awsome so ill leave it alone for now. Some pics.

Welded on the drive by wire pedal adapter. There was some tar crap between sheet metal layers that kept catching fire so the welds ended up dirty. Oh well it still holds strong.

I have done dash swaps in all my swaps (5 already) I can do gd dash into gc chassis really easily by now and make it look really good too. I think it can be done nicely into thw legacy. I messed up one part of the legacy dash swap and its only becuse I didn't notice it untill I was completly done with the car. If I noticed it right away I'd fix it. I think the dash swap is worth it because u don't have to mess with the wiring at all. Basicly u just rip out the comete harness from the donor and throw it into desired chassis and wire in a few things like lights and doors.

Where the dash meets with the glass I over looked and it didn't go deep enough so if u look behind the wipers from the outside u can see a bit of ugly. All I had to do was drop tje dash like a inch or less lower and a inch deeper.

Got my heads back today. And also me being a total idiot when I was spraying my engine bay I had accidently took the bottle of reducer instead of bottle of hardener and mixed the clear with reducer :(
Well the clear didn't fully harden and I had hope it would still harden eventually but it didn't so today I sanded it back down and will give it another shot tomorrow. Really hoping all goes well cause if not I don't even no what I'm gonna do lol. I guess we shall see

That can happen easily when painting. I ended up mixing acetone instead of a reducer on a base and it was shooting dry. Never ran into that problem before but seen someone done it on a whole car (clear without hardner) and it was all bad. Hope you got it fixed

Glad to hear I'm not the only moron lolol. Actually was looking up online to see if I had a chamce of it curing and wow there is way to many people out there doing the same mistakes. How long would it take you to pull the engine and reseal the heads on a DOHC engine? (Cam seals included, which requires resetting the timing, correct?)
I have a nasty set of oil leaks from (what I think is) the passenger side valve cover and lower cam seal.

U may not have to pull the motor to re seal it unless your doing head gaskets too. Takes me about a hour to hour and a half to pull these motors and a good 4-5 hours to re seal it complrtly if taking your time. That's with head gaskets. If u wanna do just the cam seals it should be simple. Just pull the cam gear and I usually drill a small hole and use a screw to pull out the seals and carefully tap in new ones. And yes you will have to retime the motor.

Maybe just maybe tomorrow will be first start. Need to get some oil and filter and do a little bit of wiring.
