View Full Version : 2004 35th anniversary edition engine noise

New member here, just looking for some pointers on where the noise my car is making may be coming from. First here are some videos showing the noise. 2.5l N/A 60.5k miles

The mileage just turned over to 60.5K miles so here is what I have done to the car so far:
Oil change (using penz ultra 5w-30 since I purchased the car in sept-2012) (used subaru filter)
Transmission drain and fill using subaru fluid and new filter
Both diffs fluid changed
timing belt & all idlers and tensioner using oem parts
brake fluid flushed
coolant flushed using subaru coolant with conditioner.

The sound almost sounds like it is coming from the flywheel area at the rear of the motor but it is difficult to tell. I am just trying to make sure it is nothing to be worried about.

Have you tried adjusting the valves? Kinda sounds like the bearing

Have not adjusted valves, today I took a screwdriver to see if I can pinpoint the sound. It seems to be coming from the flexplate area. Any pointers for checking to see if it is loose or cracked?

Sounds like the valves. But could just be a mild form of piston slap also.

Going to have a local dealership take a look and see what they say on tuesday. Will keep the thread updated.

Just got back from dealership. The said the noise is being caused by bad wrist pin which would require rebuild or replace the engine.

Oh geeze! Mine is an '04 too...

What did you end up doing??? Replace? Rebuild? New Sube?

I've never heard of a bad wrist pin before so I did some googling and I'm confused as to how something that like could break. Bummer indeed

Still driving it. 5k miles later (65300) now its still making the same sound with no change in sound nor the way it runs. Will keep driving it.
