So my 4EAT is going out...perfect time to swap in a 5mt. Looking around on the local Craigslist I found a guy selling "all of the stuff needed to swap from an auto to a manual for a second gen. legacy" I'll have to check into this to see if it is true...I also found a 05/06 WRX manual transmission. Curious if there would be a benefit to the WRX tranny, and if so what it would be? Also, if there is a benefit to it, could I even make it happen in my car? Keeping in mind the other way is $600 plus a new clutch (recommendations?), I don't want to spend a fortune. I'd love to keep this under $1,000 if at all possible, the WRX trans is a bit more ($700).

For simplicty & cost you should stay with the same transmission type.
Push (non-turbo) vs. Pull (turbo).. different clutch slave cylinders acting in different directions which will require a matching style clutch..
Usings a 02-05 WRX 5MT is not recommended since they are not much stronger then a non-turbo 5MT and they use a different center differential ratio (1:1.1 unlike most 5MT which are 1:1) this would mean you would need a 3.54 R160 rear diff and this just complicates things,
The 06-07 WRX has the 1:1 center diff and is slightly stronger however you will have to swap your slave ..
Stick with the non-turbo stuff from 97~04. .
