So when I got the car I realized that the key they had didnt open the trunk but the lever in the car did so I didn't think anything of it. After reading through the manual I realized that I probably had a valet key. I went to the Subaru dealer and got the the code for the master for my car since I needed a spare anyway. So I got the new key but it still won't open with the key. I know it's not a huge deal but I would like to know if anyone has any ideas as it just would b more convenient to be able to open with key VS unlocking the car and have to pop it from inside everytime. any ideas anyone?

I don't know if it is a common problem or not but the previous owner of my car had the lock cylinder for the trunk replaced. So now I have a different key for the trunk than I have for my door and ignition. It is possible that either yours has been replaced or maybe it has failed and needs to be replaced.

I wonder if maybe that's what's going on. I just tested it again and my key doesn't even turn it, not even a little so I wonder if they switched the lock cylinder. I mean I know the keys work since they open/start everything else..

Have a locksmith re-key the trunk lock cylinder to match your key. Easy to do if you have any experience working on locks... I've done a handful of them for a buddy's jeeps.

Lockpicking is one of my hobbies lol. Handy when friends lock themselves out of their car or house.

Why do I get the feeling your "skills" are actually used in the middle of the night to get into neighborhood '89 Chrysler Le Barons in an effort to get them air time off of speed bumps?

Nah. I use them to get into peoples filthy cars and clean them in the middle of the night

I would say that is weirder, but now I just really want you to move out here and I'll leave all my cars out of the garage....

Also check the little lever on the catch isn't slid down. I forgot which way is which, but I vaguely remember with one you can't open the trunk with a key, only from the driver's seat, or maybe it was the other way around lol.
