View Full Version : Glasspack for Resonator?

I've seen a couple people who have done it, but I'm curious to the general opinion on the idea. Do you think it'd make the exhaust sound better?

The exhaust line would be:
UEL Header = HFC == Midpipe/ Glasspack == Muffler

I tought a glasspack was a muffler, but long and slim?

Technically it is, but from what I understand glasspacks and resonators are pretty much the same in design.
I already plan on using a Vibrant muffler. I'm just trying to produce the best sound without drone, or being excessively loud.

A lot of the sound is going to depend on the diameter of the exhaust piping, the density of the resonators (catalytic converters AND turbos are considered mufflers/resonators) and the size of the exit.

If you're getting a lot of drone in a sedan, then the likely culprit is going to be that your mid-pipe is 3" or larger, or you have a 3"+ tip muffler with almost no baffling (which really means it's for looks).

I'm going to run 2.5" pipe from the cat back, and the muffler (Vibrant) is a 2.5" in 3" out. I haven't installed anything yet, I'm trying to get as much research done as possible before the motor comes back from the machine shop. That way with any luck no more then a week after the motor is in and running I can do the exhaust line.

2.5 with glasspack and muffler... You should be fine

If your engine isn't creating more HP than stock, 2.5" is actually too big. 2.25" is optimal for throttle response, noise and fuel efficiency. I had a 2.5" going to 3" on my stock EJ25D and I actually lost torque.

I thought 2.5 was the optimum for n/a and 3 for turbo?

The motor is not stock. If it was I'd run 2.25" no question.

The general consensus is if your motor is stock run 2.25", If you have mild modifications 2.5", Turbo's 3". That applies to most set-ups regardless of make.

2.5" for modified N/A, yes. Not for stock.

A resonator is pretty much a glass pack. The sound derived depends on the size of the glass pack itself. Short, raspy. Long, more throaty.

I am running 2.75" pipes with two 6.2 litre CATs, 2' glass pack and a Walker "turbo" muffler tucked. It sounds good. The only time it is loud at cruising is around 22-2500 rpm. It produces a deep bass rumble. But it is an H6. On an H4, the rasping may be heavier.

I have a video where you can here the exhaust here: Super Charged Outback VDC E85, Part 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHJUeyWl3Dg) Its in the shop, but you get the drift.

I use 2.5"X28" Cherry bomb for my resonator, I have a straight through Megan N1. 2.5" header back one 2.5" high flow magnaflow cat. I still wish I did 2.25 inches instead. I was planning to do a turbo setup but thats on hold. I should have ran 2.25" until I was ready, I think the 2.5" is too big for NA. Minor bolt ons wont make too much of a difference. If your heads were re worked, had cams and all that stuff, then yea 2.5" all day. This is from my experience, not what I read on the internet. You will have more sound from the larger exhaust.

I have Delta 1000 cams installed. The intake manifold, heads, and Borla UEL headers are being ported and polished to a aggressive street flow.

I thought about it but didn't know if would make any difference and I thought getting them port matched to you heads would be more important but idk anyplace that does that?

I have some genuine borlas coming in the mail and I wanna do delta 1500's or 2000's

Cams are awesomeI don't know weather or not to get 1500's or 2000's and I need to find a place to do my HG's for cheap

sorry for the jack

I'm having a local machine shop do it, the guy there did the head on my Honda and I like his work. That's what I'm having him do. He's porting and polishing the head first, then he's port matching the intake and headers to the pNp'd head.
I expect more gains in sound quality than power from the intake and headers being pNp'd honestly.

Cams are awesome
To put it politely. Lol.

^ It's all gravy baby, I like talking about my car. Hahaha
Just in case you don't know, if you go past the 1000 grind you have to get your ECU tuned. If you have someone pNp your heads why not just give them new head gaskets to install when they put the heads back on.... Just saying...
