I just bought mine at the beginning of Feb 2013 and love it. I've always liked Subis, driven a number of them, but never owned, til now! Thanks to Auto World in Fremont, CA for making the deal happen. It had 201k on it, but alot of recent work done before hitting the lot!

I have been a big fan of good looking wagons, since my days of racing autocross Datsun 510s. But I never owned a 510wagon. My user name comes from those days, Subaru-waGoon.

This is a really nice car. How did you get your lights apart to black them?

Lots of DIYs out there... think I followed one I found on here, but I've done it to several vehicles, like my ol' '01 GMC Sonoma.
Bake them in your oven (while the ol' lady is out for a few hours!) at 200*F for 10-15mins. Be sure to remove all the bits and pieces first. Then just pry them apart, doesnt usually require much force. Once you are done inside, put them back together and bake again, once cooled, add RTV sealant to keep rain out! And dont remove any of the factory sealant.

Thanks! I wish I hadn't chipped the emblem and I found out the hard way that Carb Cleaner will create fractures. But thats also why I went ahead and repainted it after chipping it. Next one I will use the awesome orange oil stripper!

I used acetone nail polish remover on mine. If it makes you feel better, those fractures were probably already there. Just something old emblems do.

Yep! I noticed yours as well. I had mine from my previous truck, but it is a bit wide. Mine is currently 45"x59" and I have been considering chopping it and customizing it a bit. I think I want to put the Subaru/Yakima bike racks on either side. I will probably cut it down to ~36" wide, which is the outside measurement of the roof rails.
I am also playing with the idea of mounting lights on the rack, my hesitation is I'm not comfortable with running the wiring thru the roof! If I do that the bottom will be shortened by ~6" and the top will get bent up at a 15-30* angle. By doing that the upper bar will provide tree limb protection and it will look more like a Safari or Baja Supertruck lightbar. Similar to this one:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/04/ford0082-1.jpg

I have (2) ProComp 8" 130watt lights from my old truck, which I am not a big fan of, but they are free! And I'm kinda thinking going with the lights from my moto, which are 3" round LEDs, brighter than the ProComps and only draw ~50watts each! But they run $100 a piece, so that will be a while down the road!

I tried the nail polish remover and Qtips, but it didn't seem to do anything! Did you pool it in there and let it sit or what?

I just dipped the q-tip in acetone and scrubbed for quite a while. It's the most precise method, but time-consuming as hell.

When are you coming down this way? Where are you coming from? I frequent both Emeryville and Alameda. Let me know if you want to meet up for a coffee and check out cars... I'd love to see yours in person! I dig the dark green & purple! Maybe see if we can get a few cars to show up some evening?

I keep seeing the beautiful front fender lines on the BD and the Lancaster models and thinking I wish my fenders looked that nice! It took a while of comparing pics to my fenders and eventually realized that the 2toned arches were detracting from the shape of the fender. So today I decided to wash the car and had extra time afterward. So I pulled out the stuff I needed and got started on the right front fender. Parts of it were a nightmare, as the sun had broken down the strength of the vinyl.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/04/8684237049_6da4e93e5b_c-1.jpg
The flash shows where the vinyl was more than you see in normal light, plus after a few dirt roads, a few washes and some sun time, it'll all blend!
Took about 2 hours to do 2/3 of a fender, I'll do more tomorrow.

Spent another 4 hours on the car today.... finished removing the vinyl on the right side, then I washed the right and polished the whole right side and hood with Meguires Polishing Clay. Then a wash of the entire car and waxed the right side. I'll finish the job tomorrow, but it already looks so good!
These pics are from before the wash or wax!

I've been itching to do something with the wheels, painting is what I can afford right now. I'm not a fan of the tuner all black look, but I might do black with the aluminum bead. I also have a couple cans of Gunmetal Metallic, which I am leaning towards with the polished bead! I've always loved the WRC look of gold or bronze, but I don't think it will look good with the grey metallic 2tone.

My long term thoughts are, Legacy GT Snowflakes, like:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2010/11/IMG_6490-1.jpg
And I found someone who has '03 WRX twin 5spokes for $80, but they will need tires, but I need tires in the next 5k miles anyhow

This angle shows what I was meaning about the "beautiful fender lines"! Reminds me of the early BMW M3 flared fenders from the '90s.

Between a few things going on today I had some time and decided that the gauge cluster needed a cleaning. And that snowballed into more work, like I usually do to myself! I decided to remove the blue gel covers from the 6 illumination bulbs, added aluminum tape to all the baffles that direct the light and I also added bulbs for the "Hi Height" & the 2 "TCS" lights. That's also when I recalled that my Dad's '05 Impreza n/a had a silver foreground/surround on the gauges. So I pulled it and grabbed a rattle can of silver and hit it with a few coats and then reassembled the whole thing. Wish I had remembered to pull the steer column apart, as I ended up making a couple marks on the new surround. I was able to touch it up so it doesnt stand out quite as bad, but its still there! :smt021

I'm thinking a nice little STI logo would look nice! I wish the KPH gauges also had MPH, I'd rock those! Hell, I still might, but I'm not the only one to drive this car. If only the faces were in the same scale, then we could swap the face and have the odometer in miles! I keep seeing these pop up! Wonder whats up with the redline 500rpms later on the JDMs!?

I was planning to go this weekend but got canceled. I'm coming from modesto. Yeah man that would be cool, theres alot of us norcal members but no one really meet up lol. We might go hiking in lake chabot this wednesday and maybe meet up after if you have time. I may not take my car cause its pretty low and can only have kids on the back hehehehe. No more purple on the wheels, got over that phase. We went for a drive today to monterey but ended up in salinas and had to come home cause it was getting late.

Thanks guys! Some areas were difficult as well, but I found more heat with the heat gun and more soaking with the adhesive remover did great! Altho, my thumb nails are shorter now!

They used the vinyl to cover up the fact that the factory did a bad spray/tape job for the color transitions in order to save time. So the wheelwells don't look as good as I would like! But I did a little test and they sprayd the grey over the greens clear coat! So I was able to remove the grey fairly quickly on a little test section with a green ScotchBrite pad. So I'm hoping to get all the grey gone around the wheelwells in the coming weeks. I will probably have to throw a bit of clearcoat on it when I'm done to get the shine back. Fortunately and unfortunately, my car has scratches all over it! I wish it looked better, but with the scratches, I'm less worried about what I do to the paint!

What do you guys think?

Also, I tried PhotoShop painting the wheels, but looks bad. My skills are limited! Could someone tint them Bronze and/or a gunmetal. Trying to decide, gunmetal will be safe. I like the bronze wheels, but think it will clash with the silver/pale bronze valance!

That sucks! Next time you are around, let me know. I'd love to get some tips and advice!
There are a ton of wagons and outbacks in the Berkeley area and in Alameda too. I've only seen 2 Legacys anywhere around here that have had anything done to them!

As I was peeling the vinyl off, I was wondering how it would look if I transitioned the grey with the trim. I agree, I dont think it worked out very well. Thank goodness we have PhotoShop to test stuff like this with!

I'm finally doing the new 4g audio batt cables today, along with the torque box and snorkus delete. Then on Friday I drive to Sac and back, that should be a good test of power/torque and fuel economy!

My new job is starting on Monday! Hopefully I can quickly get back on a good footing and buy a few of the needed things, mostly tune up parts, maybe a few toys!

Well, I got a bunch of things done in the last 2 days!

I tossed the crappy factory batt cables for some 4g ones that I crimped and shrink-wrapped with some good ole HD terminal clamps. Nothing special or overly pretty, just better than what was there and it cost me $3, since I had everything but the term clamps!

I also took an old grip from my moto and put it on the Ebrake handle, just a signature thing I've been doing for the past 20 yrs?! I think it fit on this one the best I have seen!
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/05/8703035083_27ed32da34_c-1.jpg

I also completed the Snorkus Delete, Torque Box Delete and the Hybrid CAI, but I did it a lil different than I have seen. Mine uses almost all OEM parts! So I should be able to pass smog with out having to change stuff out, not that it is a big hassle. I used the Intake pipe off a '96 Legacy 2.2L and should have grabbed all the associated hoses, but I got it sorted. Just needed 4' of 1/2" hose for the Valve Cover Breathers. Most people seem to use the Weapon R or the "Ebay $30" unit, which both are probably better and larger in diameter, but for now I wanted a factory look, at least till I judge if it works well!
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/05/8704154498_ff6f8dd0f2_c-1.jpg
In order to hook this up, I had to block 2 connections on the new Intake pipe. I only had (3) 1/2" hoses and (5) fittings. The 1/2" Vacuum plugs were to big so I just fit the 3/8" ones on!
Here's the next thing I did a little different. Most people seem to cut the elbow off the Snorkus, where it enters the Airbox. I want to be able to revert back to stock easily. So I used this for the elbow, that way its pulling air from the front of the fender.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/05/8703034751_a0a7e6fca6_c-1.jpg

I have a few more ideas to add and upgrade this setup. I'm going to add a Spectre Velocity stack to the elbow, so that the air has a smooth transition into the intake duct. Then a K&N Filter Sock over the Velocity stack,
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/05/100_0996-1.jpg
to limit water, sand & dust enter the system. Change out the Fram filter for a K&N, unless the next idea pans out. I am going to investigate using a MAF adapter and HKS filter, inside the Airbox! I also want to provide a better source of cold air to the inner fender, and not from behind the Foglight, where it gets dirty and wet! Maybe a post'99 Legacy duct from the radiator support?! Will it fit?! After that, if I keep going on improving it, it'll mean getting rid of the bottle necks. Which means an aftermarket mid-pipe between the MAF and TB.

Since I was doing the battery cables at the same time, it made it easy to do the ECU reset. Once i was done the battery had been disconnected for several hours (10 mins is recommended) and then the only other thing to do was start it up and let it idle til it was at normal temp. Then I took a drive for close to 45mins! It is definitely noiser engine wise, its also more responsive. I'm not sure if I gained or lost any HP or torque, but it did fine. I am happy with the increase in response. And the drive I did was up a steep hill, 2k feet over 10 miles?!? It climbed nice and seemed to keep pulling from low rpm to high (5-6K?!).

Tomorrow, I drive from Oakland to Sac(ramento) and back (80-85 miles 1 way) so that should tell me alot and give me some gas mileage number!

I also confirmed, my PCV is mucked up, so that will be getting changed out soon along with cleaning the IACV. I'm going to stop at Harbor Freight tomorrow and pick up the pieces I need in order to do a Dual Oil Catch Can!

Here's the results of My Version of a Hybrid CAI and my drive yesterday!

195.7 mile trip and got 25.75 mpg on 87 gas!
So here is the comparison, same starting and ending citys & same freeway route;
This Trip
-196 miles
-25.75 mpg
-2 people half way, 3 the other half
-windows down/no AC
-air temp was in the low to mid 90s the whole distance
-traffic was mixed, but alot of under 30mph
-90% freeway/10%city
Previous Trip
-279 miles
-25.0 mpg
-4 people the whole way
-windows up on the freeway/no AC
-air temp was in the 60s-70s the whole distance
-freeway was 70mph for roughly 80% of the trip
-90% freeway/10%city

The way I see it, I would have gotten better gas mileage today if I was to have the intake mod done during the previous trip when the conditions were more ideal, lower air temp and more consistant speed on the freeway!

I am very happy, it's more driveable and better gas consumption!

Along with the increase of engine noise, I'm actually hearing just a bit of the notorious Boxer Rumble. I'm sure its more that I am listening for it and its not loud enough (yet!) for anyone walking down the street to notice. I can't wait to get a good muffler on this thing!

I did have a good chuckle on the way home.... Cruising down the freeway, I spotted a 1st gen Impreza (lowered, wing, nice wheels, de-badged). I just casually rolled by at 70 and for 10 mins I watched him move through traffic to keep close enough to me. He was checking my car out, he was trying to be stealthy about it! After a bit, he decided to move on and did it with a bit of a romp and alot more speed than he had been traveling at!

So I wasn't happy with my gauge cluster and decided to make a few changes, mostly change the white bulbs for amber and to repaint the bezel, since I had screwed it up! Here it is!

I really wish the JDM speedos had big KPH and small MPH, it'd be fun to have and still be readable when I didnt feel like doing math!
I also painted the selector trim ring to match!
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/05/8710244161_07c517787f_b-1.jpg
In the future, I have a few more ideas I might do to make the gauges even better!
1- Get a JDM cluster and swap the Speedo face, add the MPH markers in. That way the odometer reads miles!
2- Put the JDM Tach in with the higher redline and top RPM, yes it wont change how the engine works, but it looks better IMHO!
3- Use the JDM bezel, if the gear selector works!
4- Do this carbon fiber look gauges DIY (http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/diy-carbon-fiber-gauge-faces-speedo-color-change-134475.html?t=134475) or custom ?white? face gauges

Well, that is for the City Lights, which the US doesn't require. I've always liked the idea, so I'm making them functional! So from the wreckers, I got a pair of these plugs off a BK taillight. If I had been thinking, I would have grabbed ones intended for exterior use. But I can add RTV or an ORing later!
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/05/8710241453_f869063ae4_c-1.jpg
I found roughly center and drilled it out with a step (UniBit) drill bit. It's larger than 1/2", but not sure the actual size. Then I had to dremel out the reflector hole til the bulb holder fit in.

And plug it in with your choice of colors, these fit the standard 168/194 style bulb and there are lots of LEDs!

From here you just mount it back up on the car and decide how to wire it in!
I'm going to wire mine to come on anytime the ignition is on, that way it works as a DRL. Probably going with the brightest Green LEDs, but that might change.

hey what tools/process did you use to remove vinyl cladding?
- De-Solv-It
http://www.orange-sol.com/images/22608.jpg
- Heat Gun
- Garage Strength Paper Towel
- Blue masking tape
- Xacto knife

Simply heat the vinyl til warm and peel it back. When its really baked on, spray the De-Solv-It on, wait 5 mins, then heat it with the heat gun til the metal is just a lil too hot to touch. Let it cool for a minute or 2, then peel it away.

Once the vinyl is off, heat the left over glue, again til the metal is just too hot to touch, let cool. Spray with De-Solv-It or similar goo remover and scrape with your finger nail! I tried a credit card, but that left micro scratches in the clear coat!

Tip: dont cut your thumbnails for a couple of weeks prior!

At the wheelwells, I used a piece of blue masking tape to draw a straight horizontal line. This gave me a guide to cut the vinyl with an Xacto knife.

Hope thats what you were looking for!

Put the money from the new job to good use and ordered a RalliTek 4EAT trans insert. Next to order is the Group N Dogbone, Dodge Neon coil, spark plugs/wires! Also need to get the diff, engine & trans fluids changed out! Also, planning on getting that nifty BlueTooth/OBD2 Engine monitor sys!

I received a K&N air filter from SLi member Felipe, but still needs to be installed! Also, have the pieces prepped to do the Throttle Body Bypass! Work has been killing me! Going from unemployed to 50+ hour weeks!

Last Sunday, I did a few runs from 0-60 and timed with my wristwatch, roughly 11seconds. I meant to do a set of baseline runs before I did any performance mods, but never got around to it! It'll be fun to see improvement!

Finally started working again, so I've been able to spend a few dollars on the car, but I've had very little time to work on it!

In the mail I got:
-RalliTek 4EAT Trans Mount Insert (http://www.rallitek.com/RalliTEK-4EAT-Transmission-Mount-Insert/p-4634) for $10 instead of $50
-RalliTek License Plate & Broadway Mirror (from dplacencia)
-ELM327 OBD2 BlueTooth Dongle, which allows you to monitor the engines sensors via SmartPhone with help from Torque Lite or Torque Pro apps!

My trip to the wreckers wasn't what I hoped, but I got some goodies from a '98 Limited!
-OEM rear tweeters & grills
-lower door cards w/courtesy lights
-leather shifter
-mounting plate to install the large roof console
-hooks for a luggage net

I'm kinda kicking myself, I keep going back and forth on the leather door panel inserts, this one had all 4 in good shape. But the pleats kinda bug me, too Executive/VIP. I will probably re-do mine at some point. Also wondering if the Limited stuff I grabbed is the same color(dark grey) as mine or if it was really black like I keep thinking! I will have to compare! Might look nice to have the vents, door control pods, stereo, HVAC controls and other bits with black trim on the dark grey dash! If it is, I will go back soon to see what is left. It would look silly for the front lower doors to be black with the rear lower doors dark grey!

EDIT:
Yep, I was right! The lower doors that I grabbed today are Black and not Dark Grey. Which means, I'm going to want to go back to the wreckers and grab the vents and the plastic pieces from the doors and maybe the leather door inserts, too. I know the HVAC and Stereo bezels are gone, but they were probably wood grain, since the window switch bezels had wood grain. Funny thing is the whole lower door panel on the front doors are plastic and the rear doors have vinyl except the speaker grills!

If you have the xtra cash, next time buy the whole door(s). I think its $50. Cost more to buy them seperately. I think door panels are already $20 something. That way you can have spare parts just in case. If the outside door is dented, find one that is not and transfer the other parts lol

Well, I went back to PickNPull Richmond today. It was nice that this weekend was their 50% off sale!
I brought home:
-all (4) leather door inserts
-both dash vents (black)
-(3) door control pods (black)(drivers side was broken on both the Outbacks!)
-6" of harness from Dodge Neon coil
-DIN storage box w/door from a '92 Infiniti M30

As soon as I can find the Drivers side door control pod and the 2 center bezels in black, my interior will be going 2 tone, which I think will look real good! Unfortunately, I forgot to grab the shifter panel, mine's gouged by the POs dog.

By the way if anyone local is looking, this '98 Limited is black and the hood/scoop is in great shape and the leather seats are pretty decent!

Yea! Ive found their i-net skills to suck at best!
I'm looking forward to getting those on the car! Along with the RalliTek license frame & mudflaps the rear wont look so "soccer mom" to match the front end, finally!

I stopped by a local exhaust shop this weekend, they said they'd do a MagnaFlow axleback for $120! So, I'm hoping to have better sound soon! Also, have a good friend lined up to do tint for me. My brother will be putting an alarm in, so I will feel safer about putting my deck in and can start listening to decent non-broadcast music!

Then the other big items remaining is Forester struts, good tires and some decent wheels!

I've been having fun buying parts, but havent had any free time to install! So my tiny garage is getting cluttered! Gotta fix that soon!

I got me a Group N Pitch Stop from FleaBay, a deal worked with r3v_v3ng3 for a set of JDM Tails, and a deal worked out for black leather w/red stitching steer wheel from an '01 RS2.5!

I'm thinking when I get to the point of matching exterior and interior pieces, adding some neon green!
Exterior:
OEM Spruce? Green over the whole car, except the rockers, and bumper insets in Black Bedliner. Neon green pinstripe in the standard OEM location or similar.
Interior:
OEM dark grey vinyl, with black suede door inserts, black plastic bits like lower door cards, window controls, vents, stereo & A/C surrounds.
All black fabric seats from an Impreza/WRX, neon green stitching on the leather shifter and leather wheel. Maybe I'll make a PBrake boot to match the shifter/wheel combo!

Well, finally got a few things done. The battery went out so it got a new one. I wire brushed the platform and sprayed it with some black Rustoleum.

After all that, I installed the K&N panel filter and the Group N Pitch Stop.
I really like the increased feel of the engine thru the chassis, also a slightly noticable increase in response from the throttle!

Then I had to run to the store and get some groceries, so I used my ELM327 module and the Torque app. My 0-60mph times got much worse!? 39.5 secs!? :smt013
Thats when I checked my 4EAT Power Mode switch, it was off. I switched it on and did a couple more runs!
0-60 10.9seconds! Thats more like it! Definitely a big difference that little mod makes!

At this time the only mods I have that would effect power are:
-Power Mode Switch
-DIY OEM CAI
-Torque Box delete
-Snorkus Delete
-K&N Filter
-10g Ground Kit
-Group N Pitch Stop

Spent most the day working on my moto, been doing a few trips lately and needed to fix an oil leak before I do another long weekend trip! But I did sneak in time to replace the broken cargo net hooks! And got the '01 RS2.5 leather steer wheel swapped in, finally! It wasn't a direct swap, the plug for the airbag doesn't match up and each have different pin styles so I couldn't just swap plugs. But the entire horn/airbag swapped right over and personally I think the Outback horn looks better on the new wheel! I suspect if I had gotten the RS clock spring, It would have all swapped over.

Where'd the gaps go??
Now air will have a hard time escaping around the radiator!
Using TorquePro and the ELM327, I saw a 5-10* drop in coolant temps during an 85* day at speeds over 20mph! My OEM gauge is very consistant, but seems that any temps between 160*F-205*F read at the same location, right between the 2 wavy horizontal lines. That seems way too inaccurate for my liking, but just a matter of improving the cooling sys and learning how safe and consistant it works over time! Easy mod, less than $10!

I've never relied on a stock temp gauge and I never will... they have three settings: cold, normal, and bye bye head gaskets.

I may have to give the garage door seal a try.

The twin 5s will work and look better, but I'd love to find a set of LGT Snowflakes or even better '01ish RS2.5 5or6 spokes! I keep seeing great deals on the RS wheels come up in other states on rs25.com, but never local for some reason!

Thanks guys! I considered the issues with the higher pressure, before I ordered it. The radiator got replaced a year or two ago, and looks to be in excellent shape. When I got the car it came with ALL the receipts from the dealer servicing, its a folder about 2" thick! 1.3 bar is only ~19psi vs the factory 0.9/13psi cap, so almost 50% increase in pressure but still not that much and the increase in pressure promotes better flow through the cooling system. But I am keeping it all in mind and watching it for telltale signs just in case!

After considering the risks and how old some of the parts are, I decided to play it safe and put a standard radiator cap on. The STi cap is in the spare parts box, at least til the entire cooling system is new!

I really need to get a better grip on my impulsiveness and get on top of the little stuff that needs to be done, but buying cool/pretty parts is so much more fun!

Well the cap helped me locate a very small tear in the upper radiator hose, so I had a fight with the coolant sys on Tues during my long drive home from work. Once I got a new hose and put it on it worked beautifully, better than it has in the 4 months I've owned the car. I also bought the lower, but havent swapped that in yet.

I also got tired of not having any A/C, so I got one of the refill bottles and topped it up and now its running icy cold, cold enough to make my hands hurt. Which was nice, cause on Friday I had to work in a hot bus, with no A/C!

Use --> I'm in Cali and don't ski, so I really dont have use for a winter set. But might have need for serious AT tires, for camping and other offroad/rally play use. I'm thinking I'll use these for daily use with good street tread. Keeping my ugly stockers for 15" General Grabbers or such, until I find a better looking set.

The look I am going for with the car will be "Rally Fan" catagory or like another member on here said "Urban Rally", I really like the look of these cars lifted a lil bit with aggressive tires(street & All-Terrain). But honestly, I live in a big city where you have to drive a minimum of 2 hours to find any legal fire roads, so it won't be seeing as much dirt as I'd like! That and my bike is better built for it, more fun and better on fuel. Where this car comes in is hauling large heavy stuff, towing a trailer, camping with non-moto friends and hauling the dog! In the longer run, I am seriously considering a set of 04ish Forester Strut/Springs.

I did a test fit of the wheels with the 205/55r16 Falkens.
They fit, but the rears only have 6mm of clearance from tire to strut, stock is 11mm. So I see using spacers in the rear, especially since I wanna run tall, 215/65 or 225/60, maybe taller than that!
If I run 225/60r16, that should correct the speedo (off by 1.5mph @ 65mph) and look real good. I will need 15mm spacers, so I am thinking the Ichiban 20mm spacers that bolt on, not sandwich, are the way to go. That should provide 10-15mm clearance.

Well after some searching thru a bunch of Subi sites and threads, a bunch of DirtyImpreza and UltimateSubaru. I wish there were more Legacy owners present on DI! I am seeing that 215/65R16 is the size to run, for fitment and available choices. This size is only 0.70" taller overall, so with that being only 0.35", I cant see any clearance issues, other than rear strut (without spacer) or fender bead (with spacer).

I've had really good experiences with AmericasTire, so I will probably return there, when the time comes. I'm trying to decide between the Yokohama Geolander ATS
http://tyrequeen.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/650x650/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/y/o/yokohama-geolandar-buy-tyres-online-in-singapore-tires-price.jpg
& the Falken ZE-912.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/07/ziexZE912_34png-1.jpg
The Falken being a great looking tire, its cheaper and better suited for my use. But the Geolander has the look I want on the car, so I'm tempted, also these will run me $100 more for the set and the mileage is 15k less. I will probably decide on one of these, see how they fit and then judge if a spacer is necessary. I tend to over think things!

Decisions, decisions!

Those are the Heidenau K76 Supermotos, they did better than expected on desert roads in Death Valley @ 60mph! They are mounted on 17s, not good for dirt and he only got 3-5k on the set! He's switching to a set of the K60Scouts mounted 19/17.

On those K76s, he only got 4-5,000 miles, but they are a race tire that has DOT stamp, so he didnt expect much. Did better than expected at 60-70mph on hardpack, gravel and sand!

I had been fighting coolant loss for a while and ended up replacing the thermostat(got the car with a generic and put a Subi in), radiator cap, both radiator hoses, coolant bypass hose, and both heater hoses. It just kept getting worse as time went on. So it went in for new HeadGaskets. While its there, its getting the Timing Belt Idler Pulley replaced with the double roller styler, NGK Iridium plugs, accessory belts, all new head seals, 2 new valves and a pair of GrimmSpeed 8mm Intake Spacers! Did a bunch with the car today!
-Installed a new knock Sensor, mine has been cracked and the code was constant! Now I get full power, I had a lack of power and alot of air sucking when accelerating, but without much power response. Seems like the knock sensor throwing a CEL puts it into safe mode
-Installed new PCV, just for the heck of it, mine was still good, but it was only $3!

Then I went to the wreckers, to find a Drivers Window Switch. The shell of the switch on mine shattered a while back and it was tearing my finger nail to open and close the window. While I was there, I grabbed a few other parts
-Center Console Extension (tan) from a '98 Forester, which looked like it would fit, it doesnt. So if someone wants it, let me know!
-Thin Center Console Lid, from a '95 Legacy L. Wrong color (brown) and I like the thick one from my OB
-Shifter Console, from same '95 Legacy L. Appearantly the manual console is different from the auto. So I have a manual console up for grabs!

Once I got home, I immediately tore the door apart to replace that switch. Then I swapped out the fabric door card for the leather ones I got from a '98 Limited a while back. Also swapped the bottom plastic for the ones from the Limited, to gain the puddle/courtesy lights! I did the card and lower on the pass side too! Then I swapped the cards and the switch surrounds on the rear doors. My switch surrounds were dark grey, now they are black! I also swapped out the parking brake console for one with coin slots where there are usually switches or a cubby. Mine had the cubby originally, but it just collected crap. And I plan to repurpose a couple switches in the future!

Is the door card off a 97? I think on the 98/99 the window switch and door lock switch is one piece. Also were you able to wire up the courtesy lights?

The donor Limited was a 98. I did get the door release/lock/window switch clusters swapped out on the rear doors, so those are the same between the 97 & 98 door cards. But I suspect the fronts won't swap, since the lock switch is separate on the 97, but the cluster is 1 piece on the 98!

I have not wired the courtesy yet or even metered any wires to figure it out! I should have been smarter and grabbed the whole door harness! That way it would be plug play!

Thanks for the JDM tails BTW!

I ran across mention of it months ago on one of the many subi forums, its supposed to be a abs y shaped piece for $20 that changed the air flow around the sub or amplifier! I should have noted the thread and/or part number. Seems like a good idea, but if they are that rare probably not needed!

I'm planning on using Undercoat to hide the green paint on the spare tire well. And I will have the exhaust tucked up higher, whenever I get around to having that done!

With the JDM tails being marked "Legacy" instead of "Subaru", I'm hating the Legacy emblems even more than before! I've always hated emblems! Soon, the Legacy, AWD & Outback will be removed. Just not sure how I want to cover the holes behind the Legacy. If I use the Outback or AWD, they will be painted Satin Black. I could also use the Subaru Badge of Ownership.

Dublin would be closer for me lol but Im thinking more of the legacy owners since we will get overlooked by the wrx/sti peeps. Theres alot more, Odycee is one of them and I think he had a friend SativaMan04 thats also in the bay area. I just sold some side skirt/rear lip to another member here from SF USDM96SLI over the weekend and he mentioned he wanted to do a bay area meet (he also had a friend who's into legacy but not into forum). I'm also gonna meet a local member here Sambo and maybe get him in for a meet. I'm pretty sure someone else is in here from sac area cause when I go to pick n pull (rancho cordova) I see the legacy's getting tore up there lol.

[/quote:2difk8ld]

I'm thinking you are right about the missing diffuser! I am plotting that for the near future. I already know how to build it, materials and how to attach it. The questions I have are:
- How many vertical vanes? or
- How much space between vertical vanes?
- How long should the vanes be? I'm thinking they should be no lower than the sides of the bumper.

What is the actual function of a diffuser back there? Is it to smooth out the exiting air? Is it just a styling thing?
*Just found this simple expanation via: http://aprperformance.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=71&Itemid=44
"Diffusers work in conjunction with other aerodynamic components of a car to help produce downforce. Because a car displaces air as it moves forward, the air molecules in the rear of the car get disrupted causing a vacuum of low pressure air.
To help channel the high speed air flow coming from underneath the car, diffusers redirects the high speed air flow to transition smoothly transition into the low pressure vacuum in the rear. This encourages a smoother flowing air flow underneath the car and allows better performance from other aerodynamic components such as aerodynamic wings."
And a great pic!
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/10/AB820519-1.jpg

Between the discription and the pic, I think my questions are answered close enough! Basicly, it wont come into play for how I drive, so its a styling thing for my purposes!

Well, my thought was to make it out of ABS from TAP Plastic, its really easy to work with and with stands alot of abuse! But then I saw this on ebay
http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0121/1482/products/kgrhqmokjse6qcbrnybosyn8yu7q_60_12_large.jpg?0
Its $90 +$14 shipping and the measurements(22"wideX23"long) would work, plus its aluminum and powdercoated black wrinkle.
Its so cheap, might be cheaper than the cost of the ABS sheet alone!

What I'm not sure about is that I was originally going to put a hitch on for towing a 3rail moto trailer, which once I am honest with myself about, I dont use one very often. But if I put a hitch on it would be silly with the diffuser!

I got a bunch done today! I started by finally getting a new muffler put on. I wanted a 2.25" Magnaflow, but the shop only had 2" and 2.5". I ended up getting a knockoff in the 2.25". The reason I got it in 2.25" is that all the ebay UELs seemed to end in 2.25", so I wanted to plan for that option. I had the shop adapt the mid section to 2.25" coupler, so that when I get the mid section redone, the axle back wont have to be touched! They also didnt have a tip that wasnt too large and wasnt a resonator, so they just extended the tip out. I'm now looking for the tip that comes on a STi or 2.5GT

What my longterm goal is, for now, is loose all the grey. Make it all factory green, including folding mirrors and door handles, keeping the bedliner on the front bumper inset and the 1/4 inch left of the rear bumper inset. If I go with sideskirts, they would probably end up in bedliner as well!

I agree!
A couple days ago I ordered 3 cans of factory Spruce Pearl, a few cans of Clear & a bottle of touchup from http://www.automotivetouchup.com. So I am hoping we see some weeks without rain and I plan to spray the ChargeSpeed grill, front bumper and rear bumper. Let the Mono-toning begin! I'm hoping I luck out and find a pair of Leggy fenders and doors in good shape in the right color. That way I dont have to respray the whole car! With those pieces, I will only need to spray the little bit of silver in the doorsills and just behind the rear door. My car has deep scratches all over it, which I will possibly touchup for the short term. Replacing the fenders and doors will fix the 2tone issue, the scratches and the dings/dents in 2 doors and 1 fender!

my first outback was green:) and i love the yellow fogs!
Thanks!
I like the look of the factorys tinted yellow as well! I wish they were better quality, but on my todo list is mount my Hella 500 fogs, the rare factory yellow tinted reflectored ones! I'm not sure if I will leave them without lens tint, but if they get tint it will be Xpel for the protection! I do plan on converting them to independently switched and run them with 3k HID bulbs!

On another note, 2 weeks ago when I got the ChargeSpeed installed, I had to remove my Hella Horns cause they interferred. Well I finally got the right hardware and got them remounted tonight! Too dark for pics, so that'll have to wait!

Yesterday, I went over to "recycle" a downed street sign that I spotted Friday night, damn if Oakland Streets didnt come by and pick it up and replace it! No front skidplate for me! :smt010

i had stock fogs on my 1st and 2nd outbacks, they kept breaking offroading and driving through rivers with them on, ooops  I have 4 tractor headlights mounted on a lightbar wired to the stock fog light button. its nice to have them on a stock switch but they go off when high beams are on and i want to change that. I also want a roof rack with lights for super overkill :) offroading can get pretty dark sometimes :smt023

You really need to get some pics up on your build thread!

If you are going to get new lights, look into CREE LEDs! I have 2 on my moto, same sixe as the head of a Dcell Maglight, 55watt draw like a singleheadlight, but 4600 lumen output from just 1! 1 light is about equal to 2 of my old 8" ProComp 130watts! I paid about $80, but so worth it!

Seems alot of us feel that way about the tacky suburban soccer mom 90s look! To be clear, I want it gone, but I lack the funds to do a full repaint. It will likely be a slow process, altho I hoping to take full use of r3v_v3ng3's budding used parts sourcing business! :smt023

love the grill, any fitment issues with the OB bumper?
The only real fit issue is cosmetic, the lower corners aren't quite the right shape. It leaves a funny shaped gap, its only noticable when really looking for little stuff. And it should disappear when I paint the grill and bumper green.

I dont have 100% confirmation that it is a ChargeSpeed, since there is no tag/label in the fiberglass. It did however have the eyebrows, which someone had cut off real nice. I'm hoping to compare it to the one on WESTcoast's BD, but that might not happen before he sells his ChargeSpeed grill.

Visiting family up north in Redding and decided I would hook up the Subi with a new set of tires! I've had real good experiences with America/Discount Tires, so I went back to them an had a set of Falken ZE612 (215/65r16) fitted on my RS2.5 wheels! The tires did clear the rear strut, just enough to be safe with no spacer, maybe 2mm. I am a little disappointed that I didnt get to have the wheels media blasted and powdercoated before laying rubber on. I will soon be stripping the gold spraypaint off the 2 wheels and then prepping all 4 for some bronze. Ihavent decided if I'm going with regular paint or PlastiDip kit.

TheGr8Ox
12-01-2013, 06:20 PM
Plastidip is fine for temp use, and over time it will get chips and peel, but it's nice to lay down another layer and not worry, it's cheap. I would say try Plastidip in the color you want and see if thats a color you really like, then save up and paint them in the future. I prefer painted rims, but that's just me, lol
Either way Plastidip is fun to play with!!

I'm really leaning towards dip, even tho I am not a fan of temp solutions. The reasons are, 1- the gold has got to go really soon! 2- the factory silver is really growing on me and I don't want to ruin the paint on the 2 until I know the bronze will work for me.

I'm currently editting a bunch of pics from this morning, I'm really interested to see what you all think of the color options. Might just have to add a poll!

Heres my breakdown.

OEM Silver - clean, not flashy, functional (got my vote) with monotone it will be all gravy. (And looks ok even when rims are dirty, unlike the other color options IMO)

Bronze - hard to say. prolly look better with two-tone. love gramlights in bronze (similiar in looks to your rs wheels imho)

gold - awesome sti inspiration rally car mudflap roofrack style, but non-subaru people dont get it. period. they think your crazy. (even though green and gold have been british racing colors and subaru colors since forever ago blahblah)

black - could look really good if you got some tint and gave the plastic black trim/foglight surround a fresh respray./matched grill/headlights etc

Damn it! The gold is growing on me! It is a bit bright for my tastes, so I am still leaning towards bronze. Another factor, in the high theft area I live in, its best if it remains a bit subtle.

Very much in line with my thoughts, altho I think black would disappear too much and hide how good looking the design of these wheels really are.

I'm having a hard time picturing your car in one color with the wheels but I was going to say gold but like you said your in oakland. Crackheads might think its real gold and rip it apart with the suspension still attach lol. The bronze looks good too but since your planning to raise it, silver would be the best.

I definitely will get the grill done real soon. Not sure about the bumpers. Lots of travel in the works this month! What works well to fill the imperfections on our bumper covers? I just have a few scratches and hex marks from other cars license bolts at the used dealer. So no major damages! I'm thinking it might be smart to grab a spare pair of bumpers from the wrecker, so I can do them slow like!

I also did the Foglight mod so the fogs stay on with high beam! Fixed the burned out bulb in the light at the same time and put an extra switch into the blank spot for future lights! I got WESTcoast's under seat sub, installed! Altho, now I seem to have too much bass in the rear, cant hear any highs! I guess I will have get around to installing my Polk/Momo 6.5 in the front & rear doors to compensate! I also have the factory tweeters for the rear. Maybe even swap the 4 factory tweets for some good quality ones! That'll make 4 6.5" mids, 8 tweeters and 1 6" sub, that should fill real well! Probably have my brother who does stereos for a living, help me out next weekend, when he does the alarm.

I also used Meguiars version of Forever Black to restore the look of the door moldings, door handles, wiper bezel and the rear bumper "outback" insert!

I tried to locate the fog relay, so I could mod it for independent function. Couldnt find it tho, probably behind the Keyless Entry modules and ratnest! Im so glad that will be gone soon!

I ran down to San Jose on Saturday, so my brother could install a real alarm. So thats done, finally!

Yesterday, I got the Polk/Momo 6.5" 2ways into the rear doors. Unfortunately, the windows hit them when rolled al the way down! I guess I didnt check clearances well enough! Thats ok, I found my dynomat stuff. I might get that fixed this week while visiting family in Redding. Probably checking out the wreckers up there to see what they got.

My brother is getting me a pair of tweets for the Dpillar and a pair of sperate components for the front, he said having the pair of tweets in the door and a pair by the mirrors would be a bit much for the deck with very little gain.

I also did a full vacuuming, got the drivers seat springs reattached. And I removed my big old rack, going to see how the gas mileage changes. I'l be keeping it around for hauling stuff. I mounted it to the stock crossbars, so it literally took 5 minutes to remove!

I dropped by the Redding PickNPull and found a few of the GL wagons and only one 2nd gen, Outback that there isnt much worth in it. But it did have the same green paint as mine and the rear hatch had the nerf bar on it. I'm probably going to go back on thurs or fri. I might grab the whole hatch and swap with mine that has the dent! If its not worth grabbing the whole hatch, I will probably grab the nerf bar.

I did buy one thing, a complete Subaru GL toolkit in the original vinyl bag, looking brand new, I paid $2.25!

I havent been driving the car much and it got hit in the drivers door in 2/2014. Last weekend I went by 2 local picknpulls searching for a decent door in the green/grey. Found 2, both too damaged! But I did get a driver seat belt, '95 folding mirrors, center console insert and 4 color matched exterior door handles off a '99Limited!

Still looking for that door and a hatch w/wing, going to try my luck in Chico, CA next week while I am working out there!

Hey man,
I'm new to the forum, obviously.

I've got a '99 Subaru Legacy Outback 2.5L DOHC. I was able to get my foglights to stay on with my high beams by grounding out the switch, which was easy. I want to make the foglights completely independent, and I haven't the foggiest idea how. Everything I have read applies to '00+ and the wiring systems are completely different. There is no fog relay in the box under the hood and I didn't want to to fool around with the rat's nest under the dash because that is different too. Does anyone have an idea of how to go about doing this? Anything would be greatly appreciated!

Ive also looked into this and only found info on the Gen3s. And I tried to locate the fog relay, but without much luck. Ive been meaning to examine a wiring diagram, should be an easy deal once the relay is located. It should just require locatingwhich wireis the power source and changing it from a headlight source to a switched/ignition source.
If you locate the relay or find the info, please do a diy and share with the rest of us!

Well, I finally got a chance to do some work on the car today! I was pretty bummed to miss a beautiful moto day, tho!
I got the new door swapped out. Last weekend, I had stripped the vinyl and the window tint, and swapped the folding mirror and the color matched exterior handle. Unfortunately, I forgot to take a pic, but the color matched handle makes a huge difference!
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/02/16235865998_6cc390fbf5_z-1.jpg
I did get the Front Strut Tower Brace installed. It looks a little odd with the bar curved down, but with it curved up it spring-loads the hood and stresses it.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/02/16236111970_187fe6c382_c-1.jpg
I also got the STi pedals mounted, they work awesome and are comfortable with improve grip! I odered them from ebay late one night and hadn't fully read the description, they are actually knockoffs for a 2010 Forester. They are not perfect fits but look just fine and I couldnt beat the price ~$25!
I also installed a locating pin for the drivers side floor mat that I had found from a Gen3 Outback a while back. Its always drove me crazy when the mat slips up under the gas pedal!

I still have lots of parts left to install, such as: MSD Coil, NGK plug wires, TPS, drivers seat belt
