Clicking noise when clutch let out - TO bearing?

8k miles since replacing the clutch, pilot bearing, and TO bearing. Trans has 218,000 on it.

While cruising today with the window down a bit, I could hear a rapid clicking noise. This noise goes away as soon as I press in the clutch a bit. It makes the sound whether I am cruising or idling in neutral. I popped the hood and the noise is coming from the bellhousing area. Is my throwout bearing on its way out already? I used a Timken TO bearing, PN 614159.

I'm going to have my mechanic buddy Keaton take a look at it this weekend, but I figured I'd do some research beforehand so I can hopefully prepare my wallet for imminent destruction :lol:

After driving it more... it didn't make noise when the car was cold. Once it warmed up, the noise came back.

Probably not, then. My TO bearing noise was constant no matter the temp. It was most noticeable when the engine was running while the car was parked. Let the clutch out and you'd hear it.

My TO is also faulty, approximately 10k miles since my last TO installation and it's already going. It isn't a click though, it's a very constant chirping sound when the clutch is let out.

I put on my header, and suddenly this noise has disappeared. I guess when I let the clutch out with my rattly stock manifold, it vibrated juuuuuust right. I knew I had a ton of heat shield rattles, but this noise sounded nothing like them.

I would say my TO bearing noise was more similar to a bad wheel bearing than anything.

It also heavily manifested itself heavily while engaging in gear without throttle (sort of engine braking).

Weighing in late here - I got that same chirping noise when my clutch was fully released, but it went away when I so much as touched the clutch pedal. I tightened the spring that sits right there with the clutch cable. Noise gone.

Well, you're actually just in time... the noise returned. I'll see if I can't figure it out this weekend when I'm wrenching on it.

Oh, also, I do get a clicking noise in first when On takeoff, but that's a combination of motor mounts and my tranny mount. My tranny mount is so bad it's not funny anymore

That looks like a cable clutch setup.

Thom has a hydraulic clutch as his is a 2.5L motor. I don't think he'll have this spring.

You sure it's not a clucking noise? Those can be quite elusive.

I think they did hydro on all EJ25s and discontinued the use of cable clutch after they got rid of the EJ22.

yep, you have a hydraulic clutch. You'll see there's a clutch cylinder reservoir up by the brake booster on the firewall.

I thought it was the release bearing when u let off the clutch it makes noises .... Hmm
