I will soon be buying all the necessary materials and equipment to dip my GRP GT black. On LGT.com a guy did his whole car in black 3m vinyl and it looked amazing and I am decent with a paint sprayer so I thought I would give it a shot. After seeing the amounts people charge to get a car fully dipped ($700-$1000) I have also been thinking about doing it as a side project service at a much lower cost. Pics to come, but first I need to get the beast to a tint shop because it would just look silly matte black without tint.

Yup that sounds about right...

Keep in mind flat finish plastidip(s) are very hard to keep clean and contact with gasoline causes discoloration. I am also doing the same but i have about 10 cars lined up however since I am in Canada we are forced to use a different formula plastidip. So the goal is to find a U.S.A source while keeping cost down.

Which sprayer are you going to use? The Wagner old or new? or the Earlex Spray Station 3500 HVLP Paint Sprayer

I was going to get the Wagner at first but have been seeing bad reviews where they were just breaking for no reason so I ordered the earlex hvlp

Unfortunately the tint shop doesn't have an opening for a couple weeks so I am either going to look goofy with no tint or I am staying red for a couple weeks :-(

Well, It took a couple months to get everything together, but here it is.

White wheels is the current setup, running Shorty downpipe and STI up pipe on a Tuning Alliance stage 2 tune.

Quick question. Are you in Connecticut? I have seen a lot of Legacies up there last week while I was in Otis, MA and thought I saw this car. Either way it looks good :smt023

No I'm down in Baltimore. The only other matte black 4th gen I have seen was a vinyl wrap job a guy did in NJ a couple years back, not sure that he still has it.

Did you spray bomb it or use gallons? I want to do this to my wagon.

Well call me an idiot for not reading the first part. Did you have any problems with it?

Yes, it was a learning experience having never used an hvlp sprayer. The roof I have had to touch up twice to try and get a clean finish that matches the rest of the car, and it still isn't perfect. Spray angle and distance are very important to keep the same all over the car, I really needed a step ladder to get to the roof, and you can tell from the uneven streaking. Hopefully when I decide to put the pearl glossifier over it it will end up looking more uniform. I know when I decide to go with a different dip the outcome will be even cleaner. Also don't do the entire thing with the same hand, there is a good chance you won't be able to move your arm the next day lol.

How did you like painting with the HVLP? Was looking into fuji hvlp guns for future paint jobs possibly. Looks like it worked out pretty well! How is the paint holding up?

I enjoyed it mostly, very simple setup and consistent performance. Only issue was when the dip dried on the needle 2 times over 6 hours it would jam and the gun would try to keep spraying after I let go of the trigger... disconnect the air hose and wipe it clean and good to go. Also switch arms often... I did not, and when I woke up the next day I could not move.

This is not paint and does not really flow the same way, you can lay this on thicker and get even coats. That being said it has held up quite well and is not peeling even in the spots I thought would.
