Well I had a fun day today,

Everything started good my son turned 3 month today, UPS is suppose to deliever new handlebars, grips and oil filter for the bike plus its Thursday one more day till weekend. So I let babysitter in and hit the road decided to take the car because of parts coming to work plus didn't have time to look for Friday parking spot (street cleaning). Traffic was ok not awesome but not bad either.
9:15 am I am almost at work like literally I can see the building block away and the car starts to stumble loose power. I pull over and it dies. Hmm... doesnt want to start back up almost does but doesn't stay running. Pop the hood touch the fuel line feels softer than normal. Grab a can of starting fluid spray a bit starts fine then dies ok fuel problem. Spray a lot more get it going in hopes of limping it back to the shop, managed to go maybe 5-6 blocks dies completely.
10:00am Im thinking fuel pump, take the filter off put a hose end into empty bottle barely any fuel comes out when priming. Close all windows try to prime again. I can hear it starting to work but not really strong, sounds like a dying pencil sharpener. Call local autozone 25 blocks away they have a universal pump in stock. Feel better. Starter fluid start the car just enough to park it.
10:30 Walk to autozone/call my work to explain why Im late boss not too happy, oh well.
11:00 Get the pump, on the way back draw bridge opens up in front of my face waste another 20 mins on nothing.
11:30 Finally get back to the car take the old pump out put new one in. I also bough clear fuel filter to see if the fuel is flowing. Well barely more than with original. Fuck. Try priming more maybe air in the hose or something. Nada.
12:15 Call a tow truck 125 bucks later I am at my shop. Call the office that I won't be coming in. Two guys that do most of the regular work there are kinda not on the level of figuring out why pump is working but no fuel getting to the engine. The one who can figure it out is working on another car and will be foe another couple of hours.
I grabbed a sandwich its already 1:30pm
Around 2:00 I got tire of waiting and started working, checked original pump with 12v source and a bucket of gas -- it works -- wtf
Checked the new one also work-- wtf.
Then I notice on the housing there is a yellow cap that has one leg kinda cracked and not sealing properly. Take it off, an empty reservoir with a cap sealed by o-ring. Who the fuck puts a cap with an o-ring that can fail for absolutely no fucking reason. Subaru does. Luckily checked with a magnet cap is made of steel although from gas looks yellow like brass. Walk couple blocks till I found Iron Work Shop guy welded it in couple mins unfortunately he only had stick no mig or tig so he spot welded in couple places as not to burn right thru it. Walk back to the shop re-assemble.
4:00 pm Holy crap it works. Car starts just fine.

After looking online I realized reservoir is for in-tank filter that my car is not equipped with so they just put a short cap on it. Bad part is none sells that cap separately, I guess ill have to buy the taller one with the filter just not install the filter itself. So thanks subaru for making a piece of shit cap that serves no purpose as to another part that can ruin your day.

Sorry for long post but if anyone has extra cap laying around or is going to u-pull yard let me know pls.

here is a pic of filter and a long cap I need the short one but i guess the longer will work as well

yeah sorry for long post/rant thingy.

yes I am looking for in-tank filter assembly or just the cap itself like the one pictured above, on the parts fiche I can't find a part number for it. So if anyone knows which models had them I'd appreciate the help

I belive that metal cap is H6 specific also. They split fairly often, at least I have changed a few of them over the years.

It would be nice if they offered them separately or even better if they had an upgrade recall on them.
I have a spare assembly but as I have just personally acuired an H6 I'm hanging on to that sucker! Sorry.
But if you do try the filter replacement route it would be interesting to hear if it works ok. Good luck.

Hey Subafreak, good to see you over here! (assuming you are the same one from NASIOC)

I was unaware that you were just one town away from me... it's a small world, eh?

The one and only! To the best of my nowledge. But jog my memory, who is this again? I know I was driving around you on the highway about a month ago. I was in my dads Blue 02 Outback, I cought up to you to try and see what was different about that SUS in the distance and then you kinda trailed behind me till I got off my exit. But the stickers reminded me to look the site up. Lol.

On topic.....Dodik, if all goes well post a part number and stuff. This is a way cheaper alternative that a fuel sending unit. It's the only thing I'm paranoid about driving my car around....well that and the drive belt tensioner and idler pullies. Lol.

Swapped out the small cap for the tall one all is good, part number 42072AE00A. Got mine from carid.com
With the new filter o-ring is NOT included so that needs to be bought separately if original is bad.

Good deal. Hopefully that one will prove to be more reliable.
