My 01 Legacy non turbo has been making some weird sounds if i hammer down and it is under load. Please help me with what you think about the problem. It hasn't hurt anything in the engine compartment but i fear it could become a lot worse. During normal driving conditions the power train is fine. I replaced the belts, and properly tightened them. Below is a video I took on you tube
Any Ideas??

I'm getting an invalid request with that link.

Have you tried belt conditioner on the belts?

As GTDrifter said, the link isn't valid, so I can't really diagnose it.

Does having your A/C on/off make any difference?

Are you sure it's not a pinhole in the exhaust? Both my 95 and a friend's 96 whistle at a very high pitch when you get on the throttle hard.

Same with my gt but as you guys said, can't diagnose it without the vid.

Try reposting the link, maybe it got messed up when you posted

I'm not hearing a squeal. But with my leak, it occurs above 3500 rpm like the description mentions.

Phantom turbo? huh. We oughtta get some stickers made up that look like the logo for a turbo company. Little inside joke only Legacy owners get.

My old roommate's sus had the whine too. His mechanic told him it was actually a turbo. I laughed for about 10 minutes. That cars been driving with the fwd fuse enabled for 3 years now

PTS phantom turbo systems.

I guess the phantom turbo just cant be solved, it sis not seem to hurt the engine at all. Its more of a pain in the ass than it is hurting something. Anyways I will just put a loud exhaust system so it will mask the PTS turbo system. :smt005 :smt016

Well, a new exhaust should fix it, since it's a leak in the exhaust.

BTW, I actually designed a logo for PTS. Drew it on my rear 1/4 panel with a sharpie, LOL.

I can throughly check the exhaust system, but my hunch is that it is my power steering pump. When im driving the car it sounds like a bearing more than a whistle out of the exhaust system. Not to mention my 01' rolled over 40k just the other day.

Throttle body whistle? You said "hammer down AND it is under load", it does this with no gas at high rpms?

I think most cars have an intake whistle, you just cant hear it on cars that dont pull air in as hard as ours do.
Mine does it with the stock air box, that's on the back-burner for now until I tear it apart to see if there's a screw, wire, rib, or other nonsense that is contributing to the "Phantom Turbo".
It sounds like a turbo, because the same thing causes it... high speed air. Doesn't affect anything if this is the issue, so here's to hope that it is that.

Now that I think about it your are very correct Rust2Runner! When I put my foot to the floor I hear the whistle/"phantom turbo" but as soon as im at high rpm's and take my foot completely off the accelerator it NO LONGER SQUEALS. (Keep in mind that the squeal sets in at 3500 rpms.) I think it might be the stock intake/ dirty throttle body, I will do some more investigating tomorrow. After i do my brake pads.

UPDATE: I will post a video but what I found was it is not my throttle body cause I took tee stock air box off, ran the car......and the noise is still produced. It is either the exhaust (I checked the whole system) or a bering. I am tired of this noise and am out of ideas what it could be...

oh man, that sucks.
Does it make the whistle while in neutral?
If it does, I'd try and narrow down the general area while rev'ing it from the engine bay if you can. (top, bottom, left, or right)

If it doesn't... well... let's not go there right now.

The odd thing is when I put the car in neutral and rev it, there is no high pitch squeal. Im not sure what it could be. The sound is only produced when I am in gear and have the accelerator to the floor or close to it.

i have had this problem on 3 of my subarus and 4 of my clients cars, it is your cat, subaru cats suck big time, they are one of the worst crappiest cats ever made, they completely disintegrate and clog up causing a whistle sound like you have a turbo, i remember the first time it happened to me in my old 95 legacy i thought it was cool  . go to a muffler shop and have it removed for free (they keep the cat its worth the welding job and pipe they put in) unless you live in a state that tests cars, then you need to shell out for a new one :-(

I am in the process of making the video, it will be on you tube. Then all of you guys can hear the annoying sound.

i heard the sound, its just the same as all my subarus, just sayin' you don't have to believe me if you dont want to.

Starting to lean towards the classic front diff whine...

If you get no whistle while in neutral... it's not your exhaust or intake, or belt driven devices. I'll wait for the video, but I'd start scrutinizing the 4eat. A quick google search only led me to the vast numbers of people that are just living with it for thousands of miles.

Okay guys, so I got a magnaflow rear muffler put on my 01 legacy. I got the muffler put on and it sounds great, afterwards I put my foot to the floor and there was NO SQUEAL! I am so suprised, it was the old muffler in the back that was squealing. I would have never thought...so my final word is "if you have a phantom turbo/ squeal CHANGE your rear muffler and that will get rid of that god awful sound." My scooby sounds great again and is lookin sharp. Thanks for all of the posts guys. We finally found out what was! :smt023

definately have the same noise. mine exhaust for sure, but i havent had time to look it over to track it down. i suspect its off the headers but like i said, havent tracked it down yet.

I will make a sound clip on you tube very soon. The exhaust sounds good and it eliminated the stupid whine and squeal. I suspect the stock muffler was creating too much back pressure, therefore making the engine or exhaust squeal. Best of luck to you guys! :smt023

UPDATE: I have a sound clip coming soon, I got Borla UEL headers on and my magnaflow axle back. It sounds great but im debating taking the rear resonator out and putting a glasspack in for it.
