Hoping someone has experienced this issue and may have some advice on the route of repair. I am new to this forum so I appreciate any help or advice on this issue.

So far four mechanics (including the Subaru dealership) have not been able to resolve the issue or pinpoint the source of this issue. The issue is intermittent and random but very scary as it results in a total loss of acceleration and jolting hard shift. The tricky part is that it doesn't happen all the time and we can go up and down the interstate on long road trips with no issues at all.

In town driving is when the issue usually occurs. I have yet to have a mechanic be able to experience the issue when they road test - most likely because they do not have the time to drive it for long amounts of in town driving time.

This is an automatic transmission and the issue happens when you are in town driving at around 35-45 mph.

Conditions in which hard shift and loss of acceleration occurs:
Start and stop traffic i.e. between stoplights where you can get up to 35-45 mph. Also tends to happen when accelerating and then going down a hill or steep grade between 35-45 mph. For example accelerating up to a hill and letting off the acceleration (no brake just foot off accelerator) when going down the hill and then give it good amount of gas once it get to a slower rate of speed.

Most times this issue happens when going up a bit of a hill and giving the car gas or going down a hill while in gear but not giving the car gas and not braking (where the car has to regulate its own speed on a downhill grade).

When the issue happens you notice first a loss in acceleration and then the AT Oil light will start flashing and a very noticeable, jolting, and hard knocking shift where you won't be able to accelerate above 20 mph (like its stuck RPMs will rev with foot on accelerator but you cannot get above 20mph). The check engine light usually comes on AFTER the hard shift.

Sometimes however NEITHER the AT oil light nor Check Engine light comes on. The codes I have been able to pull when the AT Oil light has been flashing and the check engine light comes on are PO731 (incorrect gear 1 ratio) and PO122 (TPS low voltage).

The only way we have found to get it "unstuck" from not being able to accelerate after hard shift is to let the car idle for 20 minutes or more OR turning the car off and on sometimes once but sometimes 2 or 3 times. This gets it back to normal and if AT oil light was flashing, this will go away and check engine remains.

On recommendation from our mechanic, we took it to a transmission shop to confirm that it was not transmission related or transmission computer related and they told us they could find no issue and suggested that it was something electrical not transmission related.

Since transmission was ruled out, we had our mechanic replace the throttle position sensor and that has not resolved the issue.

As a result and at our mechanics suggestion, we decided to take it to the Subaru dealership and the dealership mechanics said the voltage was set incorrectly on the Throttle Position Sensor (this voltage was actually set correctly by my mechanic and I suspect whatever is causing the issue is throwing the voltage out of whack).

The dealership mechanic readjusted the Throttle Position Sensor to spec voltage. The hard shifting accompanied by all the above mentioned symptoms happened again within a day after the voltage was set back to spec voltage by dealership. Took it back to dealership and they cleaned conductive grease of the Throttle Position Sensor's plug contacts - they said was put on there incorrectly by my previous mechanic and that would solve the issue. The hard shift came back after a day of in town driving so conductive grease was not the culprit.

Took it back to the dealership and left the car for an ENTIRE week at dealerships request! At the end of the week they still could not tell me what was wrong. The closest they could come to giving me an answer was that it may be electrical or that it is related to the engine wiring harness. Nothing conclusive though in terms of a diagnosis.

When I dropped it off to the dealership for the week, I set the trip counter to zero to see how much the car was road tested and it showed only 8 miles had been driven for road testing purposes for the whole week it was with the dealership mechanic.

In February 2013, we had our mechanic who replaced the throttle position sensor have his diagnostics person run a series of tests. The diagnostics found two bad/ dirty grounds and that the throttle position sensor waveform had lots of electrical "noise" in the pattern. They cleaned all 7 engine and PCM ground points and road tested car and had no issues.

After all of this work was completed we had no issues for almost an entire month and thought the issue was resolved. Then the exact same issue returned! Feels like we are back to square one again and is a consistent annoyance.

The other symptom we have noticed which appears to be related to this issue is while driving on the highway above usually when driving between 60 and 70 mph and higher (2500-3000 RPMs), when letting foot off of accelerator to coast down to a lower rate of speed, when you put your foot back on the gas, rather than a smooth acceleration it jerks into a higher rate of speed and not a smooth acceleration of speed. You can see the RPMs jump rather than gradually go up. This makes it very hard to maintain a constant rate of speed. Then when you pull off the highway, the hard shift as described above happens.

Our most recent Subaru mechanic in April 2013 found the following:

1. One of my cooling fans was failing, bad wire so it wasn't even running.

2. Positive battery terminal wire completely shot so bad connection there which was replaced.

3. Mechanic adjusted Throttle Position Sensor above the recommended spec voltage (says from experience he does this because the car responds better to that setting).

Thought our problems were solved but then Hard shifting, loss of acceleration and same old symptoms returned after almost 300 miles of driving!

Took back to this same mechanic and decided to have knock sensor replaced.

Now a NEW symptom has manifested itself:

Now when putting gas on the accelerator, there is an uneven shift from 1st to 2nd gear and car seems to be struggling to get acceleration between gears. Very sluggish and even. This is most noticeable going from second to third. It feels like it isn't getting gas, accelerating very slowly up to around 25000 RPMs where it for lack of a better word BURSTS into third gear. The RPMs move very gradually and then ZIP up to 30000 RPMs. This issue is more frustrating than the hard shift issue as it happens ALL the time now during in- town driving.

AND the hard shift, loss of acceleration issue has again returned (the original issue) has returned. Pulling P0122 and P0731 codes same as before.

At this point I am not sure what the next step if our mechanic or the Subaru dealership cannot solve? How on earth can I get an expert to pinpoint the issue without throwing money at possible problems?

Was the transmission fluid ever changed?
Has the transmission mount and engine mounts (including the upper pitch mount) ever been checked for wear?

Thanks for replying to my post Huffer! In regards to your two questions:

To my knowledge, the transmission fluid has not been changed out before I had this issue and since this issue has been occurring.

Also, I have not had the transmission mounts and engine mounts (including the upper pitch mount) checked for wear either.

Sounds electrical to me. If it got better when you cleaned a couple grounds and the battery cable... I would just go ahead and clean ALL the grounds down to bare metal and put some dielectric grease on them... especially the one for the transmission that connects to the firewall by the pitch stop.


Adding a grounding kit too might not be a bad idea. You can buy one or just make one

Thanks for this info. Could it still be a bad ground if I have had all the grounds checked by my mechanic back in February of 2013? The diagnostics they performed found two bad/ dirty grounds and that the throttle position sensor waveform had lots of electrical "noise" in the pattern. They cleaned all 7 engine and Power Train Control Module (PCM) ground points.

Even if the grounds are all good, it sounds like a grounding kit might make a world of difference?

I doubt that it's a ground causing the issue - but you can never go wrong by beefing them up and tracing any electrical faults.
Upgrading the grounds is easy - just follow the DIYs and make sure it's all tied in cleanly.

I would really try a fluid drain (a couple of times, each with about 100-150 miles between) and put in a bottle of LubeGard ATF Protectant. That process literally helped me save 3 (or 4, I can't recall) Subaru AT's in the last few years.

It really sounds like when the trans heats up, something is expanding and preventing shifting at the correct times. You may also have had metal gear shavings clogging things up.
The transmission shop really should have done a drain and fill.

Thanks for all of this info. Next stop is the transmission shop to see about a drain and fluid add. I have never used the Lubegard ATF Protectant. Glad to know I can extend the life of the AT of this Subaru! I guess I should probably get the front differential fluid drained and replaced as well.

Also, can anyone weigh in on replacing the Powertrain Control Module? If I can get a mechanic to diagnose that the PCM is the problem, what are the steps to replace? Does the replacement PCM have to be programmed or flashed or just plugged in?

The ground kit also sounds like a must-do project. It certainly wouldn't hurt to get better grounds on the Subaru.

With all the focus on electrical, I lean towards what your mechanics suspect. I'd normally see a faulty speedometer with transmission misbehaving shifts, if the tps has been ruled out. Thing is, the tps is not ruled out, it keeps going bad too, from what you're saying. And everytime you have it adjusted, the problem goes away for a brief time.

Could be as simple as an old battery that needs to be replaced. I'd also make sure you're not shorting to the body. If you've had an aftermarket stereo installed, amp, or the like, it'd be a good idea to make sure the connections aren't shorting. You can also have your alternator checked for free at most places to make sure it's not spiking.

Thing is though, most Subaru mechanics can pinpoint these kinds of things pretty quickly, as it should be isolated before it makes things worse throughout the car.

Start with the basics before jumping to major mechanic issues. Back to back fluid changes to rule out obstructions, battery and alternator check to rule out voltage fluctuations, look for shorts in typical locations, after that you can start hunting the ghost in the machine.

So a small update - I took the car to the transmission shop. They had the car for three days and came up with nothing conclusive. They wanted to try and diagnose the problem before going and doing maintenance on the transmission, i.e. draining/ replacing transmission fluid.

They told me that something is definitely throwing off the Throttle Position Sensor voltage (they monitored and watched it jump while idling/ driving etc.)

The also suspect that there may be a possible issue with the throttle body and I should have it inspected. Any thoughts?

Here's the best part though - since we got the car back from the transmission shop, it is actually driving BETTER than before we dropped off.

The above mentioned symptoms in this post have not returned! Surprised, I called the transmission shop to see if other than diagnostics had they adjusted anything e.g. throttle position sensor voltage, etc.

They said no, just cleared out all the codes. So I guess a reset of the codes cleared out the Power train Control Module's wonky shifting/ acceleration strategies it had adopted when the car acted up?

I have driven car almost 100 miles since pickup from the shop on in town and highway and car is not exhibiting any issues!

So I bought a basic/ cheap OBD-II code reader so next time the car acts up I can clear the codes myself to see if that has any noticeable impact on performance. I know its a short term solution but one that isn't gonna cost an arm and a leg until I can find out the true culprit.

Did the mechanic check the map sensor by chance to see if it was working correctly/clean? Fuel injectors clean? Air filter? Front O2 sensor? Seems like a pretty intense problem to not throw a code for those things though...
Sounds to me like the car runs perfect(?) until it figures out something is wrong, then just turns into a drama queen on you.

Just curious - does clearing the codes via an OBD-II reader erase the memory in the Power train Control Module and put it in "learn mode" or do I need to do something more involved i.e. disconnect a fuse or remove battery terminal?

To answer your question, no codes or diagnostics point to the above mentioned (MAP sensor, fuel injectors, air filter, front O2).

I am inclined to make sure the throttle body is cleaned as a next step.

turning the dome light on, then pulling the battery terminal off for about 10 minutes will discharge all the capacitors and completely reset all the computer modules. I typically tap the horn a few times right before I put the terminal back on. Most readers will only delete the cel-codes and take you out of limp mode until it finishes it's checks. For your case I think just deleting the code will accomplish what you're looking for, but it certainly cant hurt to do a full reset.

Do you know by chance how many flashes you got on your AT light? (or did the mechanic pull the transmission error code as well?)

edit: you can pull the codes yourself too if it's not currently doing it with the up,down,up,up,up code.
Bring the car to operating temperature.
Turn the car off.
Turn the key to the ON position.
When all the dash lights are verified (about 2 seconds), Start the engine.
Drive around the block normally. between 15 and 35mph
Pull back into your parking spot (as long as it's a straight shot in, no reverse)
With the brake still down, shift to 1
Turn the car off
Turn the key to the on position.
shift up to 2
shift down to 1
shift up to 2
shift up to 3
shift up to d

The only problem is I can only find three of the four connectors that it says to hook up for the process.

The two greens are no problem but I can only find one black connector. I am wondering if my Legacy (1999 Legacy L wagon Automatic 2.2.L) is different in regards to the "read" connectors (shown as black in the link above)? The only open connector I found close to the black connector was a larger white block connector that might be a possibility. If anyone can confirm the correct connector to plug into the black "read" connector, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! See images here:

I dont think you have the same "black" connectors that's described in that article. I didn't get too far into it, but as far as I know, the 99 doesn't have those old style plugs. I could be wrong, but I think your black and white plug are abs and airbag test ports.

I have almost the same issue with my 2007 legacy(manual). between 2000 and 3000rpm car struggles to accelerate, revs dont climb smoothly.couple of differences, when i disconnect the bat the problems goes away for a couple of days, also no error codes-none. the check engin light doesnt even show. up to date no one (Subaru and other) can figure the problem. i sent in the car yesterday to have the throttle body checked/replaced/cleaned. hopefully this will sort the problem. will let you know.
