Hey all,

I've got another (hopefully) quick question. I was browsing the local junkyard this weekend and found a set of NGK plug wires on a 99? ish Outback sport. I grabbed them on the way out and only paid $12! I assumed it would be a quick swap but it looks like the coil is a little different on my 96 Legacy. Would I be able to go back and grab the coil from that Outback sport and swap it on to my legacy? I have tried searching and found/reada lot of the info on the Neon coils so I would assume everything should swap over, with a little possible wiring for the harness, but I just wanted to check with the experts before going back and picking it up.

Thanks in advance! :smt023

$12 for plug wires at the junkyard? Thats kinda pricey lol, I paid $4 on a nice ngk set from pick n pull.

Outback sport? I'm assumming its an impreza but you can rewire it since yours have a pigtail and the other just a connector. The only other thing is I think you have to redrill mounting holes for it, otherwise I think only one might corner will be bolted of the newer coil to your manifold.

Yea a little more than I thought they would be but still a lot better than new ha. And yes Impreza Outback sport. Awesome, that's what I was thinking I just wanted to check before I go back. Hopefully it's still there this weekend.

While your at it, cut the connector that plugs into the coil. Make sure you get yourself some room to splice/solder. Then all you have to do is cut your pigtail and merge it on the connector :smt023

Or go cut another coil pigtail like yours if theres a legacy there.
That way you don't mess with your old coil and have it as a backup

That is an excellent idea sir! Unfortunately there were not any 2nd gens last week, but hopefully this weekend! I wouldn't mind some parts from an Outback or LGT haha.

I was under the impression that 99 OBS's use a 4 wire setup for the plug to the coil vs. the 3 wire setup the earlier 2.2L engines use. It may not work.

If you'd like a coil pack upgrade, the MSD/neon coil pack is the way to go for your 96.

You're right. I kept thinking legacy outback eventhough I already asked if it was impreza OBS :smt021 My bad

Cause the legacy outback was phase 1 all the way to 99 (except on some short blocks).
I think the impreza started phase 2 around 98/99

Yeah, the Impreza and Forester got phaseII stuff in 99. The Legacy got all sorts of weird combinations depending on the build date.
