So you all know how a 5mt trans sounds in a legacy. Normal right? Well just today my car starts to make a higher pitched drone when driving or idling, and especially around 2-2.5k rpm. Is this just a figment of my imagination?

I think my throw out bearing may be on its way out as well, as I'm hearing the whirring click when I let the clutch out too. Maybe something to do with this? I'd just love some input. I know something isn't right and I need the advice!

It's funny kuz back in early jan this year I could've sworn in my 95 5mt bk I heard a loud whine from the tranny as well. Almost as if the car had a super charger. It was like that for a week until I got paid and did a tranny drain and refill. After that no more whining. Also the gear oil seemed fine so i don't know the real reason of it bitching lol.

That's exactly how it sounds, like a damn supercharger. Good way of putting it. Maybe it just needs new fluids like yours did, I don't know. Thanks for the response though, hope I get it solved.

I thought it sounded pretty cool for that whole week. But usually when ur car is bitching its not for a good reason lol

Definitely hahaha. It just worries me, and if it's something more serious I don't want to let it wait and break some expensive bits. Don't be grumbling at me leggy! :smt011

Lol yea luckily I only live 4 miles from my job so my car saw around 40miles a week if that.

I just went for a drive, and maybe it's just my imagination getting the better of me but acceleration feels a little off too.

If it sounds like a supercharger, it has problems... LOL

My buddy's 84 Supra had a trans that sounded like and F-14. It blew up...

It's starting to smell too. Kind of a hot smell, maybe oil I can't tell. Any ideas?

Update yo! I'm pretty sure my alternator is taking a dump. Smells like cooked electrics under the hood and the whining noise is coming from the general area of the alternator. Any suggestions for diagnosis?

Take it to aap and have them run a alternator test on it. They can do it while its in the car or on the bench. And it's free

New alternator going in tomorrow. Quick and painless.

So that was the culprit? And it took my just about 10 minutes to rip out and drop in a new alt in my gf BH. She wouldn't stop yapping lol

Yup that was the problem. My guess is the previous owner's shop put the belts on too tight and fried it. It's still the original alternator. My car only has 70k on it so it's really just user error in this case. Oh well, woe is me.

I had the same problem in my First gen, and yes it did sound sort've like a low boost supercharger whine, but I tried the drain/refill didn't work, so incase it happens again and that doesn't work, I found that as our trannys get old they tend to grind and whine a lot, and it just happens with age.
At one point it bothered me so much, that I went to a Subaru Mechanic, and He told me that it was just getting old, and may need to be rebuilt/swapped soon, so I did a cheap EJ18 5sp. in it, and sold it for quick sale.

Doesn't the 1.8 liter trans have a different gear ratio?? I feel bad for the next persons who bought it lol.
