01 BE Acceleration Issue

Ok, so I feel stupid asking this but I'm going to anyway. So as you know I am a new owner of a 01 BE, had it since march. On my 5 speed manual transmission there is a overdrive system as well. My question and complaint is that unless the car is cold, just after I start it, If I step on the gas harder than normalish acceleration in any gear past 2nd gear it seems like the overdrive kicks in and steals all my power away and my RPM shoots up without any power until I let off the gas and It will drop down to the RPM for my tire speed and then I have power again until it kicks in again. Is that supposed to happen? also is that the over drive kicking in or am I mistaken? I should clarify though, I still have some power when it kicks in but it does steal the majority of my power from the wheels and its driving me crazy that it keeps doing this.
I would like to know 1. Is this the over drive system as I think it is? 2. Is this a problem that should not be happening? 3. If it is a problem how do I fix it? 4. If its not a problem, and that's just how the OD system works, am I able to disable it?

5 speed manual transmission? Hate to be the bearer of bad news but it sounds like you need a new clutch.

1. I have never heard of any "overdrive system" I certainly know it is not stock if your car has something like that.

3. Sounds like a slipping clutch to me, rpm's shoot up with no increase in speed, I'm sure it could be something else very far fetched but most likely cause is a clutch that is on its way out.

I had a slight hunch that that could be it but didnt want it to be. Now I only say it had OD cuz that's what the manufacture said it had when I bought it even though I had never heard of that on a 5 spd so not completely sure. But to clarify I do have some power and I have normal power under normal acceleration, its just say I drop a gear and punch it to pass a car on a country highway is when my rpms go up with power decrease. And if i hold it there i eventually do get up to the wheel speed that would normally show that rpm. Sorry, is that clear? Lol sometimes I'm bad at explanations. Not sure if this matters but it almost feels like a slight clutch disengage and reengage more than a slip and grab since it doesn't jerk at all.

So does everyone agree with 02_Legacy than or something? not saying that cant be it, cuz i have no idea when it was last changed since they didn't have receipts, but just wondering if there were any other possibilities as well maybe?

Yeah sounds like you will need a clutch

Alright since it has been established that it is a slipping clutch. Any recommendations for a new clutch? I love how smooth my current clutch is and would like one with a similar feel. No I don't have tons of money to blow so if they could be on the cheaper side please ;) also this is my first 5mt car so, will I need a whole clutch kit? Or just certain components?

When I put a new clutch into my car I went with the Exedy OEM replacement, its probably the closest clutch to stock that you can get and it is also a very good price. Best idea is to get a clutch kit which will include the disk, pressure plate, throw out bearing, and pilot bearing, all of which should be replaced. Its also a good idea to get your flywheel resurfaced.

just do it while I'm in there, thanx for the tip. If I do this with a buddy of mine can I take just the flywheel to a mechanic to resurface? I assume I can but don't wanna look like a fool. Lol. Also nice find. An engine machine shop can resurface it for you, or some parts stores can resurface flywheels as well. NAPA, Weaver, etc. Call 'em up and ask.

Hit up Reason/4Zero1Motorsports. He can get Exedy and ACT clutches. I had an OEM Exedy on my old car, loved it. I also had the 5MT snout kit installed which made engagement super smooth.

What's a snout kit? again really new to the 5MT tranny and working on it, sorry.

Is it a hard install for a snout kit separately from the clutch install? I do not have the money to buy both right now but still want to do it.

The snout kit comes with a bigger throw-out bearing. When you install a clutch, you replace the throw-out bearing. There's no point buying it later - do it when the clutch is out, because removing the engine and redoing a clutch just to install a t-o bearing (clutch or not) is a lot of work.

I'll just have to do it on next clutch replace then it'll be fine, I can't buy both so without will b fine
