Best way to lift the car...

I have a Legacy 98 GT sedan and I was wondering what is the best way to lift the car without scraping the plastic side skirts... The 'sweet spot' marked to lift is too small for my hydrolic jack and the stand to fit togeter... anyway i guess ill have to find a way by myself by trial and error but any tips are more than welcome! Thanks

As I said on Nasioc, you can use the transmission crossmember (It's real obvious) to lift it, but if you have sideskirts that don't allow you to use jackstands on the side points, it's really not safe for working on.

i usually just jack off the lower control arms so i dont have to decompress the springs.

Look further under the car from the side, you should see a nice sized "boxy" looking spot along the floor in the front. You can jack it from there, or put the stands there if jacking from outer point. Just make sure the stand is on a solid spot, preferably relatively smooth and level. :) Carefully and slowly lower the jack until the car's weight is fully on the stands.

you guys think i can 'easily' reach the the cat-back section buy jacking the rear? i need to install my new Stromung Muffler + center pipe... any luck?

certainly if you throw some blocks of wood or something under the wheels in front and back. You're not planning on climbing under a car held up by a jack, right?

I used ramp to put on my cat-back. Worked fine and a lot less energy.

if i used 2 ramps on front and jack the rear higher with 2 stands?... would it be safe to work under?

as long as you use the properly rated jackstands, yes. And good jacking points.

This is my procedure for getting the GT in the air:

1. Drive the front wheels onto 2 short pieces of wood, I use 2 2' sections of 1x8 screwed together for each side.

2. Use a trolley jack under the rear diff to lift the back up

3. Put rhino ramps under the rear wheels & lower the car onto them

4. Jack the front up from the jack plate under the front crossmember until the front is a few inches higher than the back (the rear springs will be compressed at this point so you want to be higher at the front to end up level)

5. Put a heavy duty jackstand under each jacking point just inside the front of the skirts. There is a section molded in with arrows to show where the jackstand should go to avoid damaging the skirt.

6. lower the jack a little and check everything is stable, then remove the jack completely

I can have the car approx 16" off the ground in about 5 minutes with this technique, and I feel more comfortable with the ramp/jackstand combo than with 4 stands.

On a side note, I wouldn't recommend using cinderblocks or bricks as they can crumble under pressure and give way suddenly. If you are forced to use them make sure that the pressure is supported by more than 1 block and always put timber between the top blocks and the chassis to spread the load across the blocks.
