View Full Version : 2nd Generation Wagon (BG/BK) xoSubieLegacyxo's 96 BK "Charlotte" Rust in Peace :(

It's only been 6 months since I traded my old Legacy in for my WRX, but there was something missing. I randomly search craigslist and found a guy selling a white wagon for $500. I didn't really read the description, and I just emailed him and said I'll take it. I think I scored on a sweet new city car. She has 261,000 miles on the original engine. Previous owner said he changed the timing belt and head gaskets. Also comes with some mods and replacement parts. Overall I think she was a major score, and will be a nice little car to run to work, and finally collect parts in.

Mods:
Engine
Hybrid Intake
eBay UEL Headers
3" Header-back Exhaust (soon to go away)

Exterior:
WRX struts and springs

Interior:
WRX CD player
Subaru Rubber trunk floor cover

NOW FOR SOME PICTURES!

Wait, so it already has installed UEL headers and an 3" exhaust? If so, why is the piping so big for a 2.2? I call silliness.

Kickbutt car by the way. Inb4 Stacie gives up her guts for Charlotte.

Thanks guys. The first thing to be removed is the exhaust. I'm going to try and get at least one 02 sensor, and get a high flow cat. The piping will decrease to a 2 & 1/4" from the header back, and I'm thinking about using a muffler I got from a swap meet. Then she'll sound a lot better. Once the car runs, and is inspected I'll slowly start on the rust. Robin you have no idea how bad that one quarter panel and dog leg section is.The only thing in the jam is tape painted white. I'm going to replace the right quarter, potentially all 4 doors, and swap my outback hood on for a cleaner look. Pretty much it so far.

If it has disc brakes, electric windows, and a tach it's an L. Drums, roll ups, and no tach it's probably a Brighton.

Drove the wagon to work today to show my boss. My dad called and asked why my WRX was sitting out front of my house this morning, so I had to show him my car too. He had a lot of negative remarks about how I waste my money, but then he said it would make a good car to go to work and back.

I'm not sure. Ill have to find out. Haha

Drove the car to work today. Hopefully I'm going to remove the interior and give it a complete clean out. Might spray the engine bay down with simple green to wash it off as well.

This weekend I cleaned out the wagon. vacuumed the interior so it would stop smelling like cigarettes, and then washed down the engine bay. Today I took apart the stereo and center vent trim for a free mod. A little spray bomb and it looks completely different. Just need the connector that plugs to the back of a stock WRX cd player. Also did another free mod and used the wires and terminal ends to make a small grounding kit. I went from the pass strut tower to the coil pack, and from the coil pack to the negative battery terminal. Next weekend I might look into getting new seats from a local yard, and wire in the new stereo.

Chad, I have some doors that are in good shape (0% rust) if you need them. I'm about to scrap them out, so they would be super cheap, just shipping would be the real cost.

Soooo I never posted up pictures of the hood swap. I dug out my old Outback hood from Lucy, and decided to try and paint match using white plasti dip. It's a little off, but it's better then red! The sad part is that the original hood color was white.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/07/null_zpse2425e65-1.jpg (http://s1171.photobucket.com/user/Chad_Zepp/media/null_zpse2425e65.jpg.html)

I also got carried away with the plasti dip and painted my roof black.

Currently while my family is moving, my wagon has become a "parts storage" so I don't lose precious items. I wanted to install my new tool tray and rear cover. So I had to take everything out and put it back in. Then I also went through some old boxes from parts from the first car, and then put them in the wagon. Trying not to look like a hoarder! lol

So I've been busy the past few days with moving into our new house. Finally got the internet working, and I have a small update on the wagon. Picked up a set of new wheels and tires. They look like stock WRX wheels, but are aftermarket. They have a set of Bridgestone blizzak winter tires. A great addition to my off road themed vehicle.

Since the WRX is getting a swaybar upgrage I'm going to see if that one is thicker then the legacy swaybar. Might become a free mod! lol

98legwag
08-28-2013, 07:17 PM
It should be thicker. But your WRX sedan may have a wider track. The rear should work with some modification to the spare wheel tub or extending the sway bar mounts. Front will be different from turbo to NA but you might be able to make it work. Worst comes to works, Outback sway bars are bigger you can get them dirt cheap at pick and pulls. Cost me $30 for front and rear.

I only have the rear swaybar that I'm replacing on my WRX. If it doesn't fit I'll keep it if I ever decide to pull off the Whiteline bar. I just thought it would be a free mod to do to the wagon. Maybe while I'm going to get a trailing arm bracket from a Outback I'll get a swaybar too.

Went to the junkyard and picked up a roof rack. Not sure how I'm going to attach it (might just use tapping screws).

Finally read the codes that are causing my check engine light to come on. Looks like I need to replace the front 02 sensor. Luckily I have a whole new header-back exhaust laying around. lol

Didn't expect to buy parts today. Picked up a front skid plate from Nickoulus.Conrad at the DirtyImpreza meet. He's also looking out to help me find a GT spoiler, and a parking brake handle.

The past two days I've been back in the garage wrenching on the wagon. First upgrade was the rear brakes and installing my new forester struts. Had a few bumps in the road, and I'll be ordering additional parts that need replaced. Here's a quick pic of the old drums versus the new ones.

The wagon has been in the garage without the rear wheels and brakes. Hopefully back on all fours next week!

Two week pass, and I finally get time to work on the wagon again. Grinded off the bolt heads to the wheel cylinders. Tap of the hammer and they came off. When I had the hammer in my hand, I was wondering how much filler is in the quarter panel. And this happened....

It seems the golden arches is involved.

So it looks like I'll need to do a quick repair to pass inspection. Add one more thing to the "To Do" list.

Looks like they had some dual purpose body filler in there.

That reminds me of my first car, a 65 Dart GT that had newspaper stuffed behind all the holes to support all the Bondo they used. I hit a pothole with it and lost both lower-rear quarters haha.

Well after some long discussions with some family and close friends, I decided to pull the engine out of this car, and scrap the shell. The body is too far gone for me to spend money in restoring it. But the good news is that I'll be on the lookout for another car (Outback with a blown engine).

This morning I checked out the potential donor shell. Aside from the bubble rust on the driver quarter panel the car was straight, and very clean for a 200k mile outback. Also bumped the price down a little, soo now I'm trying to sell some un needed parts to make up the cost of this shell. Trying to keep my wagon here until the swap is complete, and then send all the scrap in one load.

As for the teardown of the wagon I disconnected the headlights, grille, air intake, battery, strut brace, fuse box, washer reservoir, and my grounding kit. I'm waiting to pull the engine out until my friend gets his STi block out of his car, so I can use his engine hoist.

Sold the hood, and my STi BBS rims this morning to Keaton Rechard (he has the RHD postal wagon with screwed on flares). Just need a little more cash and I'll be able to buy the outback!

Are you going to keep the rest of the drivetrain out of her after the engine swap to the outback?

No I'm keeping it in the wagon to go to the scrap yard, unless someone wants to come pull it out and buy it from me.

This past weekend 86Bratman and his buddy drove up to remove and purchase the trans, driveshaft, and rear diff out of the wagon. Also bought from me the 1st gen forester struts, extra cargo mat, and an Outback grille (Bratman was missing an emblem, and he can't roll like that lol). The car is pretty much a shell. I removed the front seats, steering wheel, gauge cluster, stereo, heat/AC controls, and I might take out the rest of the plastic interior pieces. A friend might pick off the fenders for his potential new car, and that should be it for the parts scavenging.

Once I get a free saturday morning I'll put some wheels on the car and send it to the scrap yard to be turned into a food blender.
