I'll just cut the the chase, I want to get a EJ257 6 speed transmission, from a 2005 WRX STi, and drop it into my Legacy which is to my understanding a Phase 2 EJ22 (1997 Legacy Brighton base model)
will I need modification, or should it bolt right up? because somebody at some point had told me that all EJ chassis, can fit any EJ part (almost).

If I'm being completely retarded, and it's not possible at all, please don't hesistate to let me know, I love learning about new stuff like this, and I'm getting into Legacy's finally after spending 5-6 years obsessing over Civic's, and Mustangs.
So please cope with me!

The STi 6 speed will bolt up.

I'm not an expert, but I know you'll need:

- The matching rear diff
- New transmission mount
- Possibly new axles?
- Your DCCD won't work without a lot of wiring, possibly different ECU

It's not exactly a drop in fit, but to answer your original question, yes, it'll bolt up.

Wiscon, thanks for the straight and simple answer, No problem on the Diff, tranny, & Mounts,
What kind of ECU would work, if I'd be running a stock EJ22 ECU?

I'm honestly not sure. 6MT swaps aren't too common on standard N/A engines because of the cost (most people who have the kinda money to get 'em are probably going to run them on a monster build where they'd use the stock STi ecu or standalone EM) so I'm not sure how much info there is out there.

I'm actually going to move this to the swaps/conversions forum to see if you get a better response.

Hello, congrats on the leggy! Since you're running a first gen brighton (or just a brighton period, honestly) you should currently have a cable clutch. with the 6 speed transmission, you will probably want (or be required) to move to a hydrualic clutch.

From viewtopic.php?t=3347 (https://sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?t=3347)
6 speed manual -- USDM STi trans. Much more sturdy than the 5 speeds in any form, plus the DCCD. Don't be mistaken, its still a subaru transmission, you can still break it. Wiring the DCCD in can be a pain, especially if you are putting this in without the rest of the STi stuff (ie on a hybrid motor).

Because somebody at some point had told me that all EJ chassis, can fit any EJ part (almost).

95% true!

Mechancially it's pretty straightforeward. Any EJ series engine will bolt to any EJ series transmission, and any EJ series drivetrain will fit into any car that had an EJ series drivetrain in it before. This pretty much means that if you have a post 1990 4 cylinder in there now, you can put any other post 1990 4 cylinder in.

In addition; most! seats,sway bars, links, strut tower bars, turbos, exhausts, (some)suspensions, diffs, wheels, trim, etc. Not everything fits everything, but a quick search here on Sl-i will yield so much more knowledge than anyone could absorb by themselves. That's what makes forums (especially sl-i!) great, everyone has a specialty or experience and is willing to help guide to to avoid making the mistakes we made. Plus, the long-time veteran's of sl-i are great people to know, and want to help you succeed. /Sl-i praising rant.

So to answer your question...yeah, it'll bolt up. Hire an electrician to wire up the DCCD.

Thanks you Wiscon for the transfer, aswell as Boxer Wagon for the link.

I am not sure, if I'm considering doing a swap, or just an EJ22 build.

I used to have a first gen, unfortunately it was sold a couple months back,
I have a second gen now, and yeah, to my understanding most of the first and second gens are cables, I remember when my friend and I were tightening the clutch cable on his second gen L, we ended up tightening it too much, and needless to say, wasting $25 on another from Pick-N-Pull!

2.2L = cable clutch
2.5L = hydro clutch

I'm not sure about the 2.2L turbo motor in the 1st gen though.

I wouldn't recommend an EJ22 build. The heads flow poorly, which pretty much chokes anything you do to it besides lightening rotating mass (flywheel, pulley). I've seen some pretty good EJ25 builds, but the general consensus is for not much more, you can get a turbo swap and have a lot more potential and reliability.
