Hi Folks,

I am trying to diagnose a hard shifting issue in my 1999 Subaru Legacy L Wagon 2.2L Automatic. I am curious to know how many miles of driving does the Transmission Control Module typically utilize the "learn mode"?

I am asking because it appears that my hard shifting issue (detailed in this post here: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=27262 (http://www.sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=27262))
seems to be remedied by clearing the stored trouble codes OR if the hard shifting or bad shifting behavior occurs, simply erasing via an OBD II reader.

Currently I have observed that I get about 85-100 miles of good problem free driving before the hard shifting issue occurs. If anyone has any info it would be great to know.

I have already purchased a compatible TCM from a pull-a-part yard and considering a swap of the TCM with the hopes that this will resolve the issue.

Still not convinced a TCM swap is the culprit but as my post here ( viewtopic.php?f=11&t=27262 (http://www.sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=27262) ) details, I have been over the river and thru the woods trying to solve this very annoying problem.

If the fluid drain and fill didn't work.. and use of an additive to the fluid didn't help the shifting then as you have mentioned .. grounds are key. if they corrode, break or disconnect then issues will arise .

Since your vehicle is a 99' i would suggest "just to rule it out" replacing the TCU with a junkyard version and get the system to re-learn.

Subaru electronics are pretty solid but they do fail every now and then.

Try it out and update the thread.
