I recently purchased a 99Legacy GT with 169k miles auto. After driving 1500 miles the cam gear broke and I'm assuming the cam seized because there was no oil in the car. I just bought a 1997 Brighton 5 speed yesterday that the guy said the motor had a collapsed valve but I'm almost 100% sure its a rod knock. I was thinking about putting the 2.2 heads on the 2.5 swapping the 4eat for the 5mt in the 99 GT. That would leave me with the 2.2 block to sit on until I can rebuild it and maybe throw the 2.5 heads on that motor for the wagon. Does this sound like a feasible idea? Is the 97 2.2 heads compatible with the 99 2.5 not sure what years are phase 1 and phase 2 for these motors. What do you guys suggest?

I took 2.2 heads and intake manifold off of a '90 L and put them on my 2.5 block from a '97 GT. She runs great, about 5k later. I do believe the '99 is phase 2 so I'm not sure if that will work though. If it works out, you get a high compression motor, I believe 11:1. Lots of torque.

Yeah I have been gathering parts for that exact build, it will be worth it. I have been gathering parts for a 18e/22e compression build for my wifes wagon as well. Unfortunately my sedan is auto so I won't get to enjoy it the same. I wanted to keep the dual port heads for the header option but the single port 22e heads flow a bit better and polishing the throttle body has worked for me.
