Exhaust size questions

I've got a 2.2l with a bone-stock exhaust, soon to be swapped to UELs. I've also picked up a free 3" magnaflow muffler. With the stock cat-muffler, other than probably being stupid loud, would putting the much larger muffler on cause any serious backpressure / other CEL-type issues? Will I kill my low-end?
I haven't really got any money to build a full catback-style setup, so that's why I'm asking.

3" is, in my opinion, too big for a stock 2.2. Heck, I think it's too big for a 2.5. I could see it being suitable for a 2.2 with an aggressive cam profile, but with the stock economy head work, you're basically going to kiss you low end goodbye. Evolegacy had a similar issue when he first got on the boards.

2.25" is the happy medium for our cars while using stock heads. Go bumpy cam or boost, and then go with the big exhaust.

Like I said, though, it'll be stock until the muffler. If it's too big, it's too big. But it was free, so...

I did the same thing to my 2.2 bk. Uels with a 3" can in the back. Everything else was stock. Ran great no power loss stupid loud at hi revs. And awesome growl in low revs. Ull have no issues with it.

This is my old 2.2 bk with 2tone option. Uel headers and a 3" can.

Make sure u wrap ur headers to avoid getting a p0420 code. Apparently the headers get hotter a lot faster than the cat does and throws the code.

Well, nevermind. I traded the muffler for a carbon-fiber shifter boot. Think I'm gonna like it better.

better off lol. get the stromung muffler or the replica. or u could always hollow out the inside of ur muffler to give it a louder growl. i know a few ppl in willi that do that >__> lol

Crap dude! That sounds awesome. I honestly thought it would sound all raspy and cruddy but nope - that might be the best sounding NA 2.2 I've heard yet.

Y thank u. And if u ask me the camera made it sound more like shit. I used to get tons of thumbs up from Wrx/Sti drivers. It was damn there near the same sound as there's. Except of course no turbo bov lol
