JDM 5 speed...No reverse?

Bought a JDM 5 speed tranny. The 96 4.11 Close ratio 5 speed. Claimed to have ~45k miles on it. Heh. Well all the forward gears are beautiful. No shaft play. Nothing. However it will not go into reverse. It feels like it's locking me out. And every once in a while if I cram it really hard it will go right in.

1 out of every 50 or times it will finally go into reverse. Any ideas as to what is causing this?

That being said, u might either need gear fluid or an actual tranny. I had a 94 sentra with the same issue in reverse. To the point it had absolutely no reverse. I had to plan my parkings lol

maybe something to do with the mechanical lockout feature that prevents you from going into R when coming out of 5th?

either way it sounds like cracking it open might be the only way

check the bolt/nut on your shifter that connects to the linkage. Remove the shifter cover to see if its loose or came off. Mine had the same symptom before and turned out to be the nut came off. Hopefully its an easy fix
