There has been some talk about single button keyless entry for the USDM cars to make it behave the same as JDM cars, I have mapped out the mod necessary for my car however between 2002 and 2003 there was a wiring change so the mod is different for earlier years.

Since I have a 2004 car, I have documented the mod for that wiring scheme.

Under the dashboard on the drivers side, attached to the right side of the steering column is the "Integrated Module" which has two connectors, one blue and one grey. We are interested in the blue connector on this module.

Cut the Red-Green wire near the connector. This is pin 7. I left enough wire remaining so that I can un-do this mod if I so desire.

Using a Scotchlok or similar wire tap, connect this wire into the Red-Black wire that is next to it at pin 8.

BAM! You are done. Plug the connector back in, and enjoy your single-stage unlock for D and E type 3rd gen cars. This will likely also work on 2005 and 2006 Baja's but I do not have access to one to try it.

I have a video showing how the mod works:

The mod is "similar" for earlier years, but I need to get my hands on one before I post up how to do it. 2000-2002s do not have the "integrated module", so the mod has to be done in a different place.

The 2000-2002 version of the mod will be placed here.

I went to the junkyard today, and located where the mod needs to be done on the 2000-2002 model years. Since the car was not mine, I did not actually complete the mod, but I took a picture of where the module is. In order to get to the connector, you must remove the glovebox completely. The Keyless Entry module is directly to the right of the glovebox. Once, the whole box is removed, you should be able to get to the connector. The car that I photographed below had the entire dashboard removed, but you can get to it without doing that.

The mod is exactly the same wire colors as above but are on different pins, cut the Red-Green wire (Pin 1), and tap it into the Red-Black wire (Pin 9).

So this means you only hit unlock once?

I might do this, I'm sure my '03 Forester is the same.

Also, do you have to cut the wire, or can you just simply bridge the connection? Unless there's something I'm not understanding, cutting the wire seems unnecessary.

Also also - I added this to the threads of note.

Actually, no.. you do have to cut the wire. I thought it could just be bridged, and I tried that first on my car but every time I would hit the keyfob, it would pop a fuse.

Turns out that during the first stage, it sends an "unlock" voltage down Red-Black and a "lock" voltage down Black-Green. When you have them both bridged together, it would short these voltages and pop the fuse.

As for other models, I do not see why it would not work. The question would just be if the wire colors changed and the location of the module.

Good to know. I'll be doing this soon.

I did this mod tonight. A couple of notes:

#1. The Forester (and presumably Impreza) don't have the box in quite the same spot. Here's mine on my '03 Fozzie (I already did the mod at this point):

#2. When you unplug the blue connector, your dome light will go out. This is normal and you have the right plug. If it doesn't go out, you have the wrong plug or somebody has messed with your wiring.

#3. When you first do this, you may notice that the "lock" function causes the hazards to flash 3 times rather than once and the "3x lock beep" won't work. Don't panic, this went away for me after about 10 or so lock/unlocks.

The mod works great! It now unlocks all on the first click. Now if I could just extend the remote range a bit...

I did not notice the dome light go out as I did my mod during the day, but the door chime stopped which makes sense since the chime itself is in the integrated unit.

I also did not notice a change in flash patterns on my car at any point. It seems to behave the same as before except the intended one stage.
