Hi all. I have a 1992 5-speed Legacy SS turbo, and have owned a 98 Outback.

I'm eventually looking to buy a 3rd gen sedan, and either turbo swap it, or (less likely) get a h6 model and swap it to manual. Not sure if they ever offered non-outback sedan with the h6?

Welcome to SLi.

You sir are correct. Lots of members convert their H6 BE/BH to non-outback status.. either lower it or remove the spacers.. Swap out the doors or remove the cladding and paint.

There have been a few converted to 5MT and even 6MT but the big issue is getting around VDC.... These swaps are time consuming since you have to trick the TCU into thinking its doing ok so that the Manual ECU can operate properly.

Hows your BC SS? Rusty or Clean? I've always enjoyed the true original Subaru.. before those un-imprezive models took over :-p

Enjoy SLi and soak up the knowledge :-D

Thanks Chuck. The west coast cars seem to be rust free. They also pull a premium compared to rust belt states. I was offered an 00 RS from Jersey for 4.5k a while back. Gorgeous car, just in need of rust repair. Over here it'd go for 6.5-8k, rust free. :(

Regarding the h6 manual swap (as I mentioned a lot less likely than a turbo swap IMO), I don't think all the 3rd gen H6's came with VDC, as I've only seen "VDC" badges on a few. 212chp in a heavy ass car wouldn't be nearly as fun as a 300whp twin scroll with near instant power ;)

Nice work on your track car, hopefully the end is in site. :)

Welcome! I envy you for your SS. I borderline hate you it being a manual.

Not all 3rd gen H6's came with VDC. Mine didn't. If it was really wet and I flogged it while trying to make a u-turn, I would spin the front tires.

And you are correct in your assumption about the power delivery. While 212 hp does sound nice, the BH is a heavy barge of a thing and that 4EAT is geared pretty long. The early cars (not the later 3.0R's) are all pretty peaky too. There really isn't much to fuss about until it breaks 4k and then, it can and does get pretty cool. That engine does like singing to redline, I'll give it that. Plus, on the highway, it will cruise at 90 without breaking a sweat.

Turbo swap is the right choice for Subaru power, that's for sure. It may break a lot, but hey, where's the fun in reliability.
