Considering adding a VF39 to the 98 outback I just bought. Can anyone chime in on what the compression ratio would be with the below setup?? I've been told over 10:1 but for some odd reason I think it would be lower than that.
My idea

1999 Phase 2 EJ22 short block
1998 Phase 1 EJ25D heads
Stock thickness head gaskets

Using this matrix:

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthr ... ?t=1787730 (http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1787730)

It shows 9.2:1 CR for your combo, but with a 1.5mm gasket. What is the stock gasket thickness? You can extrapolate that the end result would be >9.2:1. Also the footnote matrix indicates not using the "recommended gasket" aka 1.5mm, would lead to detonation and wrong squish.

Marnix's chart you have referenced there doesn't have info for the ej222 phase 2 engine, only the ej22e phase 1.

Good catch. Then he would be even higher CR, probably close to 10:1!

The 25D head/222 block combo with 222 head gaskets is 10:1 with gaskets that have stock thickness. I have built this before. You're going to have to change the pistons & cut deeper chambers into the heads if you want lower compression.

Should be slightly higher than 10:1, more like 10.3:1 because the ej25d heads are a 46.9cc combustion chamber and ej222 is 49-50cc. And ej222 has 10:1 stock.

Thanks guys! Ill probably just leave it n/a and buy a turbo short block someday. Should be pretty peppy with a 10.3:1 CR and dohc.

You will find that engine with more power than a regular EJ22 (my current DOHC EJ22 is a little more powerful & it has 9.5:1 compression) & VERY eager to rev. In fact, you will likely drive fast because it WILL be fun & it is what that particular kind of engine is suited for. The DOHC heads are perfect for the revs. They maintain power & drop off right at redline, so that engine will never be starved for midrange. You will lose TQ though due to the 30% displacement reduction a good intake, ignition, & exhaust setup will make up for some of that along with ignition upgrades. Also, make sure your fuel filter is a clean one. This is VERY important.

What cars did these EJ222's come on? it's not something we got over here... I'm very curious!

99 legacy non-gt, and 99-01 imprezaa non-rs is all that got the ej222, not an incredibly common engine.

I'm thinking about swapping to a phase 1 short block, or adding legacy turbo pistons to this block. Dont want to have too high of a compression ratio and blow it up easily. I know at 5psi it would be safe but who wants to run only 5psi?

8.5:1 and 20psi is good fun, I suggest trying it :P
