View Full Version : Forester Petro's 2002 Plasti Dipped Forester S Premium Sport- July 9th

09-24-2013, 08:08 AM
Went and test drove it on Sept. 21 2013 at noon and by 2:30 I was plated and home with this new beauty

- picked it up with the stock 2.5L at 224,450km
- New battery (Dec 2013)
- staying stock with regular maintenance

- Beautiful rare seats thanks to this Canada only model (check pics further down on page 1)
- Heated seats
- Stock rubber trunk mat
- Always kept super clean

- Stock colour silver but now Plasti Dipped Red with a Black roof
- Rare Sport Model Alloy Rims with summer tires
- 03-08 Forester Steel Rims with Beefy tread Toyo observe GO-2 plus winter tires
- De-badged
- Removed Fog Light guards
- Original tint in alright condition. I think its 50/35
- Lightbar with 2 random flood lights
- roof rack cross bars

This 2002 Forester S Premium Sport is the absolute top of the line forester for the year, it has a bunch of dealer options/upgrades on top of what a normal 2002 S premium would have
- Sports Mesh Grill
- Sports Rims
- Spoiler
- Flaps
- Nav Rear view mirror
- factory upgraded sound system
- armrest extension
- Subaru security system

its got higher milage but it was owned by a Subaru specialist master mechanic trusted far and wide so.... :)

- Engine will stay stock and hopefully strong for years to come :)
- Stereo will stay stock and interior will stay clean
- Keep it super low budget

(pics from when I got home the day I bought it)

Very cool. I like those wheels a lot. They kind of look like a revamped snowflake design.

09-24-2013, 01:20 PM
That's what I thought too
They are very flat on the outside of the spokes where normal snowflakes are more rounded

I love discovering the little new thing when gettin a new car

09-24-2013, 05:58 PM

I had a bottle of headlight restore/cleaner from years ago with my BD so this was free and took 20min.
I figured out how to use it properly this time :)

09-26-2013, 06:39 PM
I just drove over 2 hours round trip after work to go get my winter tires from Rocky's
He gave them to me with the Purchase of the forester. Toyo's with plenty of tread
I was under the impression that they were on generic steelies but when I got there I was pleasantly surprised

09-26-2013, 06:39 PM
screenshot of the short but sweet FS add

I said the price was fair and didnt haggle
After I handed over the cash he said since I gave him the asking price he would throw in the Forester rims with nearly new winter tires on them, freshly balanced and ready to go.
It payed off to not try and get the car with a lower offer.
I figure the rims+tires are worth at least $300 so I feel like I got the car for $2000

So I took a Mr Clean magic eraser to the rust/rust stains today and holy crap!
So much of it disappeared so quickly and easy.
It still hasen't been washed yet but its looking way better today.

The biggest difference is in the last pic, the pass rear looks pretty bad in the old picture in my older post but it looks much better now. This was with no touch up paint sanding or anything, purely wiped with magic eraser

Tomorrow I will clear some space in the garage and probly start sanding and dipping the hatch

09-29-2013, 08:05 PM
So I wanted a beater to practice random things on and today I tried my hand at rust removal
It sucked  it wasn't hard but i still thought it would be easier. I bought some attachments for my drill and once I found the right one to use it got better.
Stupid Subaru putting holes behind 4 different spots on the badges. Very little bondo used so we'll see how it holds up.
Next is the rust beside the front windshield, i'm going to do the roof and pillars black and so I left the top half of the hatch unpainted since it will be black soon enough.

All the badges I removed

The finish is super smooth, I definitely have the technique down :)

10-06-2013, 05:33 PM
I just cant stop!

I decided to just sand this crap down to the bare metal and didnt use any bondo on the roof.

1 coat done. I ended up doing a good 4 or 5

and done

If it wasn't raining right now i'd go get actual pics outside
The transition at the hatch from the red to the black worked perfectly

I 'll be doing the side mirrors black next

Boy does this make me wish I had the same 15% tint from the wagon on the Forester
its begging for darker tint than the 50%/35% front/rear it came with

10-07-2013, 05:10 PM

It's tempting to go 3 tone with a Black roof, Red middle and keep the bumper line and down Silver

11-24-2013, 04:33 PM
with all the snow today it was finally time. I put the winters on the forester today

12-24-2013, 06:09 PM
Got to work at 7am yesterday and it was so dark
Decided to snap a couple quick pics of the foz at night

it was cold

02-23-2014, 07:39 PM
Some quick shots of the interior
These seats have great side bolstering and are very comfy

I'm so tempted to get a JDM front lip on eBay but its almost 20% of what I paid for the car :(

04-19-2014, 05:30 PM
So when I bought the foz it had a 1L bottle of oil in the back.
I thought it might be incase it burns oil or maybe just to have incase of whatever.

We've had it just about 7 months and I don't think I had ever checked the oil  never had a dash light or temp rise or funny sound other than the usual hight milage knock for first 2-3 min of being on.
So I checked yesterday and the oils full and all good, could use and change but it has less than 2000km on it

The coolant however was low.
The overflow tank was empty and when I opened the radiator cap it had coolant pretty close to the top so I wasn't too worried...

I bought some premixed coolant and put that in. Haven't driven it yet but I'll stretch its legs tmw.

Glad I looked when I did but I hope I didn't let it go too long unattended.

It's still my wife's dd and in the 7 months I've probly driven it 12 times. I need to pay more attention to it
I can't wait to get my red plasti dip job done. ETA is next month

04-20-2014, 07:48 PM
I adjusted the tire pressure and drove it around today after adding the coolant
All seemed well. After a bit I pulled over an checked the overflow level and it was at a good level

The temps were higher today and the winter tires have good tread depth so they're pretty loud...

Might have to change tires soon :)

06-06-2014, 05:10 PM
Well Wednesday the Forester took a tiny rock to the windshield and the rock won  I'll have to replace it sometime soon

Put the JDM shoes with summer tires on the FOZ today.
Debadged the side door "FORESTER" from each side

Then, since it was in the garage I started to paint.
I've been dying to do the side mirrors since I got it, they were so beat up.

Next time the forester see's the light of day it will be red...

06-07-2014, 06:55 PM

06-08-2014, 01:32 PM
Still have to do the hood and front bumper.
I want to try and source a cheaper JDM front lip so that's why I'm waiting to paint the bumper.
and if I can get a cheap WRX scoop for $50 or less I'll cut a hole in my hood and paint the hood then.

If both those fall through I'll just do them red in a month or so

its not perfect but I like it and that's what matters

06-20-2014, 04:38 PM
I just went to remove those big AWD stickers you can see in the back windows (more clean/de-badged look)
but the tint is over top of them :( and im guessing this tint has been there almost as long as the cars been around

I'm not taking the tint off to do that but I really don't want that sticker there...
only solution I could think of was an SF wagon mafia sticker big enough to cover it.
Its a cool sticker but then Its not really the clean look Im going for.

I plan to finish the red dip on the hood and front bumper tmw. Stay tuned for pics :)

06-21-2014, 04:18 PM
its been a long time coming but its done!

Now I really want to dip my rims white and drop the suspension a bit, that would help complete the look

06-23-2014, 12:11 PM
looks really good man, makes me miss my purple ugly duckling... grab some legacy suspension and it should look good

06-28-2014, 04:04 PM
Theres a screw in the sidewall of one of my tires :(

I sooo don't want to buy new tires for this car... might have to put the winters back on?

06-30-2014, 11:56 AM
Theres a screw in the sidewall of one of my tires :(

I sooo don't want to buy new tires for this car... might have to put the winters back on?

buy some used ones, either kijiji or i know wheel depot off merivale and bently can be pretty cheap

06-30-2014, 01:34 PM
good idea
That's a block away from my work

07-02-2014, 07:25 PM
The cars still being dd to work and its only loosing around or less than 0.5psi so I'm leaving it for a short time
I think i'll try a diy plug from Canadian tire, these tires only had 1 summer left anyways... I want to get that summer

Got the registration changed from silver to red this week. No need to get pulled over for no good reason
The red dip cured pretty well. It looks better than it did the first couple days.
The black roof needs some love and touch ups. might do that this weekend :)

07-19-2014, 04:09 PM
I just took the foz out for a rip and I love that car :smt007
It handles amazing and drives so well for the 2K it cost.

Im still leaking air from the screw in my Passenger rear tire but its only about 1psi a week.
and the car sees no highway driving or extended trips, only short around town adventures.

2 weeks ago I MSG'd a guy I know through my local sub club
His parents had an '03 and '05 forester and wrote them both off in separate accidents this past winter
Both taken away with the snow tires/rims on leaving the summers at his parents house

In march he listed the 2 sets of summers on original alloys for $400 each. not a single reply
I msg'd him 2 weeks ago offering $200 for either set he/they would let go for that amount
and I haven't heard back yet (I can see that he hasn't logged into his profile since)

I'm kinda banking on one of those rim/tire combos for the $200 I offered so till I hear from him I'll keep checking my local forum every day
His parents live 2 blocks away from my parents so I can pick them up conveniently close. (I go swimming at my parents every weekend)
If I get them I am totally painting them White before they go on. I want white rims on my red car :smt023

Only problem is, they may have sold them 4 months ago and just never updated his FS post.... so for now I wait patiently :smt020

The foz gets lots of attention around town. My wife has had several ppl come up and ask her about it
I got the thumbs up from a 2door RS a couple days ago in it.

I've always enjoyed having a car everyone in town knows is mine. My BD's always gave me that feeling

07-20-2014, 05:52 PM
Me and LeggyxPower finally crossed paths

07-25-2014, 04:39 PM
Got this from LeggyxPower today :smt023
Can't wait to put it on this weekend

07-26-2014, 12:18 PM
first thing today I had to put this on

I put the lights on top but I might move them down to under the bar

Now I pretty much have to buy 2 or 4 more lights to fill out the bar

07-26-2014, 09:52 PM
wow...that looks so much better on the forester then it did on the legacy..Looks so good man!

07-27-2014, 12:20 PM
Thanks man

I went out this morning and modified they way I mounted it. Now I feel confident it wont fall down while im driving :smt021
I also re-positioned the plate with new mounts I made
And I moved the lights under the bar for fun
I just wish I painted it before I did all this work putting it on the car

07-27-2014, 09:00 PM
plastidip the bitch ;)

08-01-2014, 07:36 PM
The current dip is with rattle cans but the next will be with a gun. I already have it

Maybe purple next summer?
but I really want to let the red fade, for some reason I always liked the look of old cars with faded red paint

I think I ended up buying 1 more can of red and 2 black on top of whats in the pics
and after several tests I concluded the different cans were the exact same red when sprayed

08-04-2014, 08:49 PM
WOW , thats a lot of plastidip

08-14-2014, 09:07 PM
This pic is from the day I went to test drive the foz. after plating it but before the drive home. when I got home the emblem fell off when I poked it lol
The owner was moving that day and wasn't around so he left the keys in it and said call if him if I want to buy it after my test drive
We drove it for 20ish minutes but I knew right away it was the one.
I had recently test driven a dozen subies in my search for our second car and this one most definatly drove the best. literally half those cars had the CEL come on during the test drive
and a couple of the people were like oh ya... that... but I believed a couple of them when they said it had never done it before that test drive. I believe they just never looked till I pointed it out to them

There was a couple BD's a couple BK's a couple imprezas and couple foresters. I put out a big net and didn't care what I caught
about half 5spd's and half auto's. the test drives gave me a great feel for how the different chassis of the late 90's felt
most were 2.5's but there was a 2.2l legacy wagon, a 2.2 impreza brighton and a super rare '96 2.5L GT BD with that 1 off year with 155hp engine *I think

I see 5spd's come up for sale that I want all the time and I'd trade the foz for the right one but I think it's too customized now to get top dollar for it + I just want to keep it and get a 3rd car that's 5spd

08-19-2014, 12:06 PM
So I wanted to take the Foz out yesterday but noooo I took the Legacy
I ended up buying something and didn't even think about it fitting in the car
Of course it didn't and I didn't have my roof racks with me

FORESTERROR to the rescue. 2 ratchet straps and 2 minutes and I was on my happy way

08-22-2014, 06:23 PM
I just noticed the dash has no shifter tree
I thought almost every automatic had a dash shifter indicator somewhere...weird

This pic is from when I emptied the tank and started filling with 89 instead of 87
I only gas up once every 30-40 days so the extra 5$ is nothing
I'm currently at around 227,550 km

08-30-2014, 02:31 PM
Did some touch ups on the roof today
When I did the roof last September I let the dip dry all the way before trying to peel the tape off
The tape wanted to bring the dip off with it around the roof rails :(
I gently used a razor to trim the tape off but the razor was super dull and ripped alot instead of slicing

the ripped dip led to peeling and rolling down (not by more than 1mm or 2)
So I trimmed properly and resealed around the roof rails since that was the only affected area

I also found this pic online of an old 98-00 foz with the seats down and I was pretty sure mine were different
the 01-02 have the sides fold down for a little bit more room as you can see

09-16-2014, 04:10 PM
Well 360 after buying the Foz I get my first CEL
This Saturday is the 1 year mark

I got a text from my wife while I was at work
It was a pic of the CEL and she said "sad light" lol

She was on her short drive home and said it drove normal

I got to use my OBD2 reader on one of my cars for the first time in almost 3 years (plenty of use for friends in that time)
Suprized to see 3 codes
my scanner read:
P0456- Evaporative emission system leak detected (very small leak)
P0442- Evaporative emission system leak detected (small leak)
P0456- Evaporative emission system leak detected (very small leak)

I'm guessing it has come on before and my wife just didn't notice
why else would the same code be stored twice like that?

and its funny that it said (very small leak) like that in brackets on my scanner
I don't know why but that makes me feel better

I'm not concerned and don't plan on fixing anything for this.
I'll clear evap codes till the end of time

09-17-2014, 08:09 AM
Hell, check if the gas cap is on tight enough. Could be that small of a thing.

09-19-2014, 08:05 AM
those codes are terrible, thats what i had on my old car, a small evap leak. Its hard to track down because it can be basically anything in the evap system.. You may have to get a smoke test done to figure out where the leak is coming from. First things first replace gas cap. When filling your tank does the pump shut off prematurely? Oh ya and the code i had on my car, i would clear it and it would disappear for over 300km (about a week) then pop up again, or would pop up 50km after i cleared it.

09-19-2014, 08:30 AM
Ya I had the same issues on my first LGT
The gas does shut off prematurely when filling but I was used to that from my old car so Its not that annoying...

I guess i'll replace the gas cap and go from there
Im still not really that concerned so I'm not rushing out to buy one

I checked the oil last weekend and it was full and not that dark
it has less than 4000km on it but it hasn't been changed in 1 year...
I REALLY need to do that very soon

09-20-2014, 12:05 AM

not sure if this is your problem but give it a read

09-20-2014, 04:53 PM
Thanks a lot for the link. It was a good read and gave me a good place to start.

Well 1 year ago today I bought and drove the foz home with 224,450km on it. I just checked and it has 227,776km.
That's daily driving it 6 days a week lol

For her birthday I bought some lithium grease to hopefully hide some intermittent squeeks
and dipped the front winter rims for a uniform look.
I'll put them on soon since I'm still rocking my dead summers with the screw in them.

09-20-2014, 10:54 PM
Definately hides the rust! Doesn't look bad at all!

09-24-2014, 04:38 PM
Definately hides the rust! Doesn't look bad at all!
Thanks :) I cant wait to mount them. Maybe if I have time this weekend

I looked under the backside the other day.
I'm getting an intermittent squeak from the rear when reversing over a bump/uneven ground
I bought some grease thinking the least I could do is grease my rear swaybar bushings
I haven't done it yet but when I looked under I saw the swaybar itself looks like its about to crumble in half

and looking at my picture, is that my rear diff leaking/weaping?

10-04-2014, 11:28 PM

10-13-2014, 04:46 PM
Forgot to mention CHECK the FILLER NECK it is located behind the RR tire and are notorious for rusting out on the legacy's (2 gens) dunno if its the same for the foresters or not..

10-25-2014, 01:47 PM
So for the first time in a month I put on covered toe shoes (crushed my toes dropping a weight on them at work)
I was able to get my steal toes on and hobble out to the garage to change the Foz's shoes

It looks awesome with all 4 rims red now. Pics soon

also sprayed some grease on my sway bar endlinks in hopes of curing a stupid intermittent squeak

10-26-2014, 11:30 AM
I want to find some time soon to go take a little photo shoot with my 2 subies

02-21-2015, 05:08 PM
So I spotted a crazy good deal for super rare rims on my local Subaru forum

They are similar to LGT snowflake rims but they are JDM SF forester rims. 16"x6.5" 48 offset
They were never available in the USA, and only sold as an option on 2002 Forester S Sport models
Since the forester had L, S, S limited and S Sport trim levels there are not many of these in existence and again only available for 1 year, 2002

I already have a set of these sweet sweet rims but another set, with good condition name brand winter tires for $80!?

I could not let anyone else beat me to them.
All center caps there, all tires even wear and good tread left, and no bends cracks or funny stuff with the rims

Only thing is the car they came off had 340 000km so they have seen alot of use. No curb rash, just wear and tear

I told the seller I didnt want to travel far and he said for the $80 he'd deliver them! Done. I met him 5 min from home at a major intersection to make it easier for him to find me

With the savings from getting them so cheap I could afford to have them sandblasted and Powder coated and still they would be worth more $ then I have into them. My local club has done a group buy sandblast/powder coating session the last 2 summers so if it comes up again for a good price i might try and get these done in gold.

If not i'll either sand and try painting them gold myself, or just clean the surfaces and plasti dip them for super cheap
hell I could just rock them as is cause they arent THAT bad

The add mentions a tire needs to be re-seated on its rim, small leak where the rubber meets the alloy (just like 1 of my tires last summer)
Thats fine because i kinda want to pop a tire off the rim and weigh one of the rims because that info just doesn't exist due to the rarity of the rims.
I could un mount the tires and sell just those for more then I paid for the rims+tires
I dont even need these, I have winter and summer rims and tires for both my subies
But I'll keep them for at least a couple years and hopefully get a 5spd beater subaru to use them on (hopefully a BD)

02-24-2015, 06:59 PM
God damn you and the deals on the rims...I don't even go on the Ottawa subaru forum anymore since it's so dead there...but I guess i should

02-24-2015, 07:31 PM
Thanks. I totally have to build a shed in my backyard this summer for off season rim storage

the only reason I was able to get them was the seller never put them on kijiji
They would have been gone so fast. But like you said the forum is totally dead so not many even saw the FS add

I don't really post on there anymore, no one responds and all anyone owns is new WRX's and STi's. no legacy love
I've been on there since 2006 so it's hard to stop going there out of habit

I got the forester E-tested on Sunday
No wait at oil changers and within 5 minutes I was driving home with a pass :)
Less then 2 blocks after leaving the facility on my way home my emissions related CEL came on lol
That would have resulted in a fail but I had my OBD2 scanner to clear codes if I got them before the test...
Got home, cleared them and on with life I go.

02-24-2015, 07:45 PM
Did you clear the codes then go for the test? Because that would also result into a fail all they look at is if sensors are ready or not...on your obd scanner there should be a menu called I/m...they only look at those monitors if they are "ready".. so if you clear codes/reset the edu ..all the monitors go into "not ready".. to get them "ready" you have to do some driving listed on mto site...I did a lot of reading on this lol

02-25-2015, 07:21 AM
No, I clear the codes when I get them and Hadn't gotten a code since November or December
If I had to clear them before the test I would have like you said, taken it for a drive around the area until it was all ready

My OBD2 scanner has 3 separate lights under the screen, red(CEL is on, NOT READY!), yellow (no CEL but not ready), and green (no CEL all systems ready)
So I could tell when I got there that my car was ready and should pass

My scanner was regular $200 at CT
I got it on sale for $99 and used over $80 in CT money at the time so It didn't cost me much at all
+ I've used it on so many friends cars and mine that it has been worth every single penny

02-25-2015, 10:27 PM
mad jelly , i only have a 20$ one off ebay that does the job so far but i would love to get one that tells temps and voltages

03-26-2015, 05:28 PM
I have no idea where I got the idea but I was under the impression that the winter tires I got when I bought the Forester were really M+S tires
I started thinking that over this past winter and figured I would just run them all winter, then leave them on for the summer and not bother changing my rims and tires this spring since last years summers are old, cracked, worn and theres a nail in the sidewall.

I figures the M+S (mud and snow) must be fine for the summer but I recently got down and actually looked and they are Toyo observe GO-2 plus tires, which are winter specific tires.

So I'm going to keep my eyes out for local online classifieds for forester all season or summer tires
I'm hoping to score them for $200 or less with or without rims cause I really dont need another set of rims i'd have to store

The Toyo observe GO-2 plus currently on the car are still so beefy with tread I'm not worried about wearing them down too much this summer, Im just not sure they will give me the proper grip needed for a baby hauler as the forester has become the #1 car we transport my son in.

Last weekend I duct taped the weather strips under all 4 doors as the rubber had ripped where the clips keep them held to the bottom of the doors. I had been re clipping them for a year now and figured the duct tape should keep them held in place pretty well and I hated every time I looked at the car and could see the black weather strips hanging out from under the closed doors.

Fit a full size 8ft couch in the SF today
Thought I was going to have to ask my buddy with a truck to help me move it but I figured I would try and move it myself and I'm glad I did. It fit no problem. Just used 1 ratchet strap to secure it in place.
Thankfully this couch has removable legs. If it didn't this would not have worked

I was planning on strapping it to the roof but that would have been crazy lol

05-11-2015, 04:19 PM
damn it almost fit, Don't lie though you would feel bad ass with it strapped to the roof

05-17-2015, 03:30 PM
Took the foz to a chip wagon for lunch
Got home and cleaned out some winter debris from the interior
Swapped out the winter floor mats for the summer carpets

06-11-2015, 08:27 PM
Like many of u
I take every opertunity to look out windows to check on the safety of my subarus

06-11-2015, 08:29 PM
I think that was a Mazda CX-5 In front of me
As far as the size comparison goes

07-09-2015, 09:49 AM
When I dipped the hood and front bumper over a year ago I found out quickly that I didn't have enough paint left
I decided to focus more paint on the bumper and the hood got the short end of the stick
It looked Ok but never good like I wanted

But this summer the ultra thin coat that used to be on the hood has been fading/disappearing
It was fine all last summer and winter but about a month ago I noticed it was getting worse
It makes the car look terrible from the front so I had to do something about it

I got the car all prepped and ready and had a full can and a can with about 3/4 left
I figured I could get about 2 full coats of the hood

Turns out I had taken the full cans tip off to use before and the 3/4 cans tip was not working properly
Then while struggling to get 1 full coat done the full can decided to just stop spraying and wont work
This is what I'm left with...

Better? but not really :P

So the sunroof started making weird clicking noises a few weeks ago
It would click once every 5-10 seconds.
We bought the car knowing it didn't work but it never had an issue before this.
The buttons do nothing but we didn't care.

I figured out the noise was coming from the sunroof and when I would press the close button the clicking would stop
When I let go it would start right back up again.

I drove it to work this morning and it sounded extra wind noisy
I got out at work and noticed this

It's supposed to rain for the next few days so this had to be fixed ASAP

I started with trying to open the shade that retracts into the headliner, it was stuck closed
I pushed and pried and jammed but it wouldn't open to give me access to the sunroof and tracks
I finally used a flat head screw driver to pry it and I pulled the whole thing out and into the cabin. This was the most impressive part of the battle.
Then I un bolted the glass to get better access to the tracks

I put the key back in the ignition to try pressing the close button while using my hand to help it close
But before I knew it the track on the passenger side retracted back into the roof over the trunk

So I did what any backyard mechanic would do and bolted the sunroof down to the remaining 3 track pieces and jammed a section of a 2x4 inside to keep the sunroof flush with the roof again.

It is a temporary fix but may become permanent...
We'll see how it holds up after the rain we get tonight :)

Is it the motors or electrical issues? My inner ocd would drive me crazy to find what wrong...I love my Sun roof

08-10-2015, 08:09 PM
It's driving me crazy for sure
I went through all the electrical diagrams in my Haynes manual but no direct fuse for the sunroof and no real info about this problem on subaruforester.org

I figured instead of wasting time online I'd just figure it out myself

I'm going to take it to work again tmw and do some more tinkering. I might drop the headliner above the trunk because I think that's where the motor is

08-11-2015, 09:36 AM
this morning I dopped the headliner in the trunk and bam, the motor was right there
I unplugged the 1 plug going to it and no more clicking noise :)

I just wish I had have done that weeks ago before the track piece went deep into the roof to never be seen again

and no obvious leaks overnight with heavy rain
but im still going to plasti dip around the seal on the roof

One thing you can do, is look at a manual replacement sun roof. It has no motor, and no real "tracks" to worry about (think rally-style) and you'll save about 100lbs in weight.

On a personal note, not feeling the red wheels, I think it would look a little better with dark gray wheels. Have always had a soft spot for this year Foz.

Yes I was thinking of replacing it with something else but after holding the glass in my hands yesterday its maybe 40lbs if that
and all the track parts and brackets cant weigh that much more then 10lbs so I really only think its about a 50lbs weight reduction

Ya, the red rims are just the crappy steel wheel I use for winter
I did consider white for my summer rims that are similar to LGT snowflakes but I don't plan on doing that anytime soon

And I never really cared for foresters till I got this one and now I love them. I kinda want to replace it with a newer 03-08 foz

08-12-2015, 10:44 AM
I plasti dipped around the seal of the sunroof today so I don't have to worry if it will leak in the rain
and then I plasti dipped the roof rack cross bars black to blend in more with the rest of the roof

much better now

So as of today I've had the forester for 2 years.
Current mileage 231,088km

And I think starting tmw I'm taking over DD it
I'd rather my wife and son drive my safer newer better legacy
There's so many things I'm going to miss from my legacy but the foz will do for now

Other then oil and gas the only thing I've spent money on for this car was a new battery and the light bar
It's been a great low budget Subaru but I have the itch for something new. If only baja's were easier to get.

Wow only 2 years...upgrade to a forester xt hehehe

Just rolled over 233,000km today
Still daily driving the forester but I rock the legacy on the weekends
The foz could use new breaks, at least 1 noisy wheel bearing, a non cracked windshield, tires that weren't manufactured 10 years ago(spider web cracks all over the side walls but tons of tread left) and a really good tune up with new spark plugs and all fluids.

It's starting to become obvious that in 27 months all I've done to it is change the oil and the battery, Literally not another dollar has been spent on it. Ideally I can make it through the winter and then either part it out, keep it for parts or trade it in towards something newer.

Got a wave and thumbs up from another 01/02 silver forester today :)

I cleaned up the interior hoping winter is done for the most part. I left the winter mats in the car for now

04-04-2016, 12:12 PM
man that interior is mint. ALSO 15-20cm of snow wednesday LOL

I've been looking online at tribeca's lately.

Around here they seem priced less then equivelant year and mileage 3.6L outbacks.
I don't need 7 seats for adults but when kids grow up it would be nice to have room for some of their friends

And there's an outback at every corner in this city. Having a Tribeca would be different.

The 06-07 model had the 3.0L and hidious headlights and grill
The 08-14 model had the 3.6L and facelift lights and grill

I'm really only interested in a 7 seater '08+ but I'm still just online browsing. I need to go drive one sometime.

I will totally be keeping the forester for all its juicy parts and not making the mistake of trading in again.

Damn winter is trying to come back from the dead.

Goodbye snow

Hello summer

Cleaning. It's always funny to see the silver paint from the hatch and door jams

Well another year has passed
Today marks 3 years with the forester and she's seen better days
Currently sits at 237,931km
Still didn't have to put any money into it but it certainly could use it

-paint is faded and terrible now, looks like quite the beater
-small coolant leak, not the HGs but probly an old hose somewhere
-front passenger rotor is warped and chirps with every wheel rotation
-still clearing an emmisions related CEL all the time
-knock sounds like a WWII tank
-pulling a little to the right
-windshield still cracked
-rust has made a pretty big hole in the rear pass. wheel well
-1 random day the windows and locks stopped working magically fixed themselves

There's probly more but hey, I only do 25km a day round trip with it and its day have been numbered for awhile now
I still love it and can't wait for the snow. I hope it lives till then

Most of the value left in the car is in the JDM parts
-rare JDM spoiler
-rare JDM grill (still have the badge to put back on)
-rare JDM seats and door cards
-rare JDM snowflake like rims (probly wont sell these)

Some value in these parts too
-compass and auto dimming mirror
-center armrest extension
-rubber trunk mat
-roof crossbars
-light bar
+ all the odds and ends

it does have an LSD tranny in great shape so thats gotta be worth something, its super fun in the snow thanks to that

as a whole the cars worth next to nothing but if I parted it out i'm sure i could recoup a decent amount

It's nice to see a red beast!

10-10-2016, 11:23 AM
soooo are you looking to sell???

10-11-2016, 11:50 AM
soooo are you looking to sell???

That's a question we debate several times a week

We want something newer and bigger. And have a ton saved for a new house that we could throw down on something brand new or gently used (thinking of spending 20ish). I can get my legacy wagon back (which just rolled over 110,000 yesterday) and my wife can have the new ride for transporting babies.

But if we use our savings then we have no more downpayment for the next house
And if we take out a loan that will hurt the size of mortgage we can qualify for

We're in a tough spot right now and just aren't sure what to do next

And life's not slowing down for us. Yesterday my wife gave birth to baby #2
We don't really have a room at home for new baby(but that's ok for the first year)
And driving the legacy with a car seat behind the drivers seat sucks for super tall me

I know, I'll just win the lottery and bam problems solved!

We both still love the foz, it's just we need something bigger then the legacy
Thinking Van, tribeca, Outback, or newer forester but haven't decided what yet

Got in the Forester this morning and noticed the odometer

and here is how bad the fading has gotten
I originaly did more coats of plasti dip on the black roof and the rims then the body so i guess that's why it didn't hold up

Yesterday was fun
Got in the Forester to drive to work and the E-brake light was on when I started driving, I stopped and pulled it up and then put it back down and the light went away for a moment but came right back. I tested having it in drive with the e brake up and it wouldnt move, then i put it down and it moved normally so I know it wasn't stuck on and engaged.

I chalked it up to old wires acting up as it had poured rain the day before.

The drive to work had me thinking that the brakes are really fading fast and I had the thought that i'm not going to let my wife drive this car anymore.
Before I took the car for lunch I checked the coolant and topped up the radiator as i've been doing for like a year now...
But when under the hood I noticed the brake fluid reservoir was super low so I was planning to get some fluid and put it in on my lunch break.

I started her up and went to put the car in drive and the brake pedal just went to the floor with no resistance.
It comes back up just fine but unless im standing on the pedal it does nothing to stop the car at low speeds like 10km/h (did some quick empty parking lot tests)
I got out and looked under the car and all my brake fluid was on the ground under the passenger side in front of the back wheel.
Clearly some sort of massive leak. looks like when i press on the brakes it's just squirting the fluid out with every press.

I borrowed another car and went and got some brake fluid. I was able to limp it home but I have zero experience when it comes to brake lines.

This could be the end for the old girl but she had a good run
I'm not gonna start putting money into it at this point but if I can fix it for cheap I'd love to keep it going

You can see here when I got home I attempted to parrallel park in a spot I wasnt gonna fit into so I aported and parked across the street.
The car left a fun stain on the road and as you can see :/

05-31-2017, 11:08 AM
Brake lines are easy to do! As long as it's the brake line that's actually bad.

The only bad thing is, if one brake line is bad enough to blow, that generally means all of them are. If you're planning on keeping the car, you replace all of the lines at once. Otherwise, if you replace just one, another one could blow on you the next day (or in the case of one of my old trucks, as you're bleeding the system after you just replaced one line).

05-31-2017, 05:52 PM
Thanks for the inspiration
I'll try and look at it this weekend
I need someone to step on the brakes while I'm looking so I can see where it's leaking from

07-17-2017, 04:00 PM
I've got the forester for sale on my local Subaru forum
Not sure if I'll get any buyers though, the forums pretty dead

08-22-2017, 08:29 PM
So 2 people (both mechanics) came to look at the car but 1 was looking to flip it and liked everything but too much rust for him and the other was buying for his 16 year old daughter and surprise surprise she wasn't a big fan of it (its not really a 16 year old girl kinda car lol)

I ended up getting a ticket since it was dead on the street beside my house for 2 months but the first guy to come look at it worked for Subaru and he said I should check the shift cable. I crawled underneath the next day and bam, right there, was no cable! It must have snapped and came off the last time I drove it. I manually fiddled with the lever on the transmission under the car and figured out what position each gear was and once I found park it started right up. I crawled back under and switched it to drive and there I was driving the beast for the first time in months. Even though the brakes are done and it hadn't moved in 2 months (rainiest summer on history) they didn't even make any noise.

I have since moved it to the garage and I'm going to start parting it out. I've had people asking me for parts since I posted it for sale. I drilled a hole in the floor and rigged up a coat hanger shifter. It's super classy and no more crawling under ther car 2 times every time I want to drive it

Its officially gone :(
After a couple months of fielding emails from out of towners and kids that dont know what they're talking about I had a junker come take it away
I took off as many parts as I could to keep the car looking complete
All the stuff that came with the car that I kept
- JDM alloys
- Spoiler
- Extended arm rest
- Unused never seen the light of day full size spare
- unused jack and crank
- OEM rubber trunk mat
- OEM sport model carpet mats
- a bunch of little clips, hooks and interiors bits
- all the badges from the trunk and grill
- Fog light covers
- key and fob
- the lightbar and lights (didn't originally come with the car)

I already have a local guy who want the spoiler and extended arm rest.
Alot of the other stuff should sell pretty easily or I'll keep some of it

Here are the last pictures I took when I started trying to sell it.

I had moved it from the garage to my yard beside the house so it was starting to look pretty ghetto
Here's the final look I had as it was taken away. The tow driver really liked my coat hanger shifter mod
Easy cash in my pocket and a large weight off my shoulders
Not sorry its gone but sad to see it go. That was 4 good years out of a $2000 car that I did zero maintenance to during my ownership
