So I was browsing thru craigslist and found this car for $300 with no motor. The owner was parting it out and by the time I viewed the car, someone already bought the wing and oddly enough the other sending unit across from the fuel pump. I was able to get it for $200 for the whole shell. The guy didn't have time to keep going there for someone to pull parts out. AAA wouldn't tow it that night since it didn't have an engine :smt013 . So we went the next day to tow it with a tow bar and we almost got rolled up on because the owners friends thought we were trying to steal the car lol. Anyways we made it back in one piece.

Everything is stock. I really wished it was 5spd but I couldnt complain for the price. It does have some rust but nothing I cant fix. Also most of the rust are from bolts/brackets. No spoiler but I found one at the junkyard

Helluva nice score man. Can't wait to see where this one goes.
Oh, dear. You're starting to encroach on Robin's 'more projects than time/space' territory. lol

Thanks, for some reason I favor this over the outback since it has a moonroof.
I'm not even close to Robin's projects lol. That guy is a savage lol
It's more on the no time but I have the space. Its nice to live on a corner house. The neighbor probably called in for the plates already. She thinks I'm running a chop shop hahaha

I had time to work on this car and took out the transmission, which was the culprit of why the owner sold it. Sure enough the previous owner ran the differential dry or something to where there was alot of metal shavings and it broke out of the case lol

So many nice legacy's and yet all i want is one =) cant wait to see whats in store for this wagon. You always have some nice trick up your sleeve. Is this a keeper parter sleeper or quick resale?
r3v_v3ng3
02-07-2014, 06:34 AM
Thanks, I already acquired alot of jdm goodies for this car but might have to sell it to get an engine for it. I was thinking of reselling for a profit but i might just fix it up for my dad. I already went as far as grabbing a full 5spd harness for the car. Its also a perfect candidate for a flare since the quarter panels are rusted :)

And..... Here is another legacy :)
Parts car. 97 outback with the cold weather package, 5 spd. The owner said that it was hit by a drunk driver while it was parked at his house. Car runs great but salvage title. I'll transfer engine/drivetrain to the clean title GT wagon. I should have time to start tearing it down next week. I'll be selling the parts to pay off my friend who lend me the money to buy it. Anyone needs parts? lol

Sry guys, I'll be keeping those. I'll be converting the GT from auto to manual and I'll be using the whole wiring harness from the outback to the GT. I pretty much have the car down to bare metal. Just gotta chop it up and recycle to make up some of the money.

Just gotta take the quarter glass and windshield off then ready to cut it up.
So the plan is to transfer all the wiring, drivetrain (5spd conversion), basically the whole rear end too since the GT is badly rusted underneath, engine (from the blue outback), most undercarriage bolts (gt has rust on em), brakes and ABS (GT have the older ABS module also AT). I'll make sure to take out the spacers for the drivetrain too.

The wiring challenge would be to make the GT specific parts to work with the (97) outback wiring. From the looks of it, it would be the courtesy lights (doors and lights for the visors) and the moonroof. So when its all said and done, it will be a cold weather outback wiring with the GT extras. Oh yeah, gotta wire up the power antenna too.
Can you get a closer pic of the dealer sticker on the GT?

So mostly the parts underneath the car is rusted. The body is not rusted, except for a couple of body part (driver side rocker panel which was pushed in, the driver side qt panel which have a hole on it and pass rocker panel). Otherwise most of the parts that are rusted are the ones that are bolted on the car, which I'm going to replace with the non rusted one from the outback.
Yukkkkk!

Already got the rear end out and gas tank yesterday. Also took out the front end. I'll be putting the gas tank and 4.11 rear end later on today. That should clear up some space
Ha! I thought it was. That car was sold maybe 35 minutes from me!

Throw the Outback rear sway bar on. Its a nice upgrade since you have it already.
The Outback got better suspension component than mine.
would love to see you bring up any gen2s.

Any pick and pull will have them. There are few in MD here. Look up LKQ pick a part. They took over Crazy Rays. The sway bar should cost around $15-20. Your 2.2L would benefit from an Outback/GT front sway bar too. I have both on my 2.2L wagon.

I figured it was close to you. I should make a thread on those dealership sticker on the cars. The outback parts car have one too (in CO i think). Although I've only seen them on the wagons not so much on the sedan.

Got done cutting up the parts car to make more room to do the swap. Took me 5 hrs (first time) and several times my arm muscle would lock up from the vibaration of the sawzall. Tried to take the windshield out and ended up cracking it smh.
I have the engine bay almost bare for the GT. I want to paint it black so just in case I might paint the car later in the future with a different color other than the stock color. I just need to drop the front subframe/suspension so I can paint it. I'll be installing all the brake components from the outback. The outback seem to have the newer ABS module and the GT the older one. Might have to do with the production date (both 97)

I wanted to finish by the end of the month but I'm trying to help my friend get a 93 Legacy Sedan. He basically own it now, we just need to get bunch of parts for it to get it out of the previous owners driveway. Still need to go to junk the pieces from the outback parts car that I cut up so I can have more room. Mostlikely gonna spend time with the fam's this holiday weekend.

So, the auto shell actually don't have an extra bracing for the clutch pedal/linkage to bolt up into. I hate all these little stuff that subaru change :smt013
Auto shell (missing the place to bolt up for the clutch linkage). Guess its not needed since no one ever complained (from others that did a auto-manual swap) but its a good thing to have for extra bracing.

I was going to install the snowflakes wheels back on but then I noticed that the tires are missmatched. 205/50 on a pair and 215/60 on the other 2. No wonder the transmission was messed up lol. So I had no choice but to install the blitzens in. It sitting on HR lowering springs for the wrx's. Looks better than the eibach one for the GC's lol. Excuse the dirty garage. Oh, man, those look perfect on it... even better than on the Outback.
Yup, I think it has to do more on the springs. I think the rear is about 1/4 inch lower compare to the outback where the rear was like almost 2 inch lower lol.
Looks fantastic. I am too lazy right now to read back through all the posts. Are you planning on keeping this one for a while?
Yes I'll be keeping this for awhile, gone thru all the troubles plus its a GT
Nice! Any plans for paint? I'm loving this project.
Thanks. Paint will be next, hoping to get it done by the end of the month. I have extra doors that are pretty straight and the doors on this car have alot of dents/ ding on it. So if I replace the doors I might as well change the color lol. Also gotta fix the quarter panel rust and I have backup flares for the BD and its tempting to do it :smt027
Only thing is that I have to use coilovers and use a wheel that would fill it up.

So I thought it was only the 3rd gen that have uses a different steering column between the outback/non outback but even the 2nd gens also use different column.

outback is a little over 3 1/2" from the metal lip
Both are from 97. I was trying to use the outback one but it wouldn't reach to the steering rack. So I pulled them out and measure them and sure enough there's a difference. The outback have a better steering wheel so I'll swap them over later. So I'm using the GT column and had to swap the ignition since the GT was auto (extra wires that lock the wheel if its not on P or N) to the manual one from the outback.

Washed it on saturday and went to AAA today to get a dmv pass to get it smog. Apparently I don't need to smog it (unsure why but its been on non-op since last year but I'll take it lol). So I just need to show proof on insurance and I will get the tags.

Anyways, NALegacy came by on wednesday to get some parts. He grabbed the outback front bumper&support/hood/foglights/grill and the front subframe since his was bent. You can see that his sway bar mount is twisted. I helped him install the parts and he also traded me back from the previous parts I sold him (95-97 lip and fogs). He also grabbed a set of the forester wheels from my friends car

I would love to have the wagon with way the paint is. Something about it having those wheels and that ride height with the crappy paint is awesome. Then again, my wagon has crappy paint too. Just not quite that bad yet.
You gonna do the skirts and 'lip' in red, too, or leave them contrasting?

Does it look level with the WRX struts and H&R springs or could it use a Saggy Butt spacer? I can't tell and am considering taking the AGX's w/ Prodrive Blues from my WRX and putting them on my wagon.

I wanted to keep it red but when I went to get a qoute the stock color is expensive and I would need at least a gallon sprayable since the whole outside body requires straightening/filler/rust repair. Now I have spare doors that are straight but different colors. Only the passenger front door is good, the rest requires alot of body work.

Its actually legacy struts and h&r springs. It looked level before but after driving it for awhile it could use a saggy butt spacer. What is the lowering specs for the prodrive blues?

The car needed body work on pretty much every part of the car.
driver side front and rear doors are pretty dented and had to pop the side rails where the skirts go in because it was lightly hit on that side and left to rust. Also took the rust out of the driver rear qt panel

Here are some pics the other night when I installed the jdm projector fogs. It was easier this time around because I used the BD as a template. Looks good. Love the 4 shades of green on the street. We need some daytime pics of the front lip & jdm foglights!
Thanks. The weather hasn't cooperated. Got a big storm coming and its been overcast for the past days. Got it tinted last night. The seats is the next thing to do.

One thing I notice on this car is that it likes 91 octane better. It missfire on 87. I think its because of the 96 ej25d heads on the 97 block. I think 86bratman pointed it out before that it has low compression (from my outback build) from those being mixed. If I have to put 91 octane, might as well do a mild turbo build with a vf11 turbo I have.
I was under the impression that the '96 heads give higher compression.

Good stuff! Now I know where all the Subaru parts go here in the 209! ('97 GTW, and '99 OBW in Sonora)
I just missed that OB when it was for sale on CL. Needed the trans. Gotta subscribe to your parts threads.
Nice color choice on the GT!
Peace,

Yeah I don't know what it is. So apparently even the 91 gives it a misfire, this is only on the freeways though like above 70mph on 3 and 4 cylinder. So I went back to 87 lol. Doesn't misfire at all in the city or below 70. I redid the timing like 3-4 times already and still the same. Maybe the tensioner :smt017
Do it do it do it!!
Tempting..... lol Trying it out on my bro's gc first. I should make a members ride on it since I did most of the work lol but I will document it.

Yes! lol We actually picked up a 99 impreza parts car and a 99 forester from sonora several years ago. There's alot of subies up the mountains and you can get em cheap if you know how to work on em.
Thanks! Maybe I'll see you up there when I go visit (to go see a subie for sale lol)

Alright update on the car. I sold the stock wing and probably take the rfrb wing from the outback. For some reason I like the stock one better since it flows well with the roof unlike the rfrb that kinda like a hump on it. I do like the 3rd brake light on the rfrb though.
Also passed smog couple days ago and its that time to put the rumble on the car. I'm gonna turbo my bro's gc and will have an uel header/midpipe to use. Just need to source out a muffler for it. :smt026

Misfiring on 3&4 could very easily be the coil or igniter since that's the rear pair of the motor.
Car is looking good though, haven't peeked in the thread for a while.

Sry I got busy. Sending you the pics is no the problem, its trying to explain what the picture and what to do. I still need to remember what was about those pics. I do know it needs another diode to make it work. I will make a DIY eventually.

So on this car I ended up putting the roof rack back on. And then months later my girl destroyed it. She hit those parking blocks. So no more lowered cars for her and she'd been wanting an auto so you'll see what I got.
