2001 Legacy Startup problem

Hi, recently I'm been having some issues with my 01 legacy. When I start it first thing in the morning, or at least 4-5 hours after it last ran. I have a manual tranny, and when I depress the clutch to start it, the rpms go to about 2500-3000, and the engine makes the revving sounds as if I have the foot on the gas too. For the first minute or so, when I leave my driveway, I'll lightly step on the gas and go down the driveway, but when I lift my foot off the gas instead of decelerating, it will still stay at a constant speed. Anybody know what this might be attributed to, or have had this similar problem. This began to happen after replacing the fuel filter and pcv valve, and also my check engine light came on for most of the day yesterday if that helps.

Scan the car for what the CEL is for, I bet it will tell you exactly what the issue is, but my thoughts are probably the Throttle Position Sensor.

^this. Sounds like u have a very sticky tps. Use some brake cleaner on the spring where you can accelerate the car from the engine bay. Hopefully u can clean all the gunk that's on it and should revert back to normal

Correct me if i'm wrong but I thought it had to do with a cold start to help warm the motor faster??

I've seen revving on cold startup before, but not usually to those high of RPMs.

I would check to make sure the throttle isn't sticking open, either because of an obstruction or something interfering with the throttle plate itself, or because of the spring in the TPS (which gives you the spring back on the throttle) being sticky/worn out.

Warning!! If you remove the TPS, make sure you mark the positions of the screws!! It's much easier to lines things back up the way they were than to realign the TPS because you don't know where it was adjusted to.

Took it to my mechanic to get the cel checked out, the code was for part of the idle control. The specific part is a dealer only item, but luckily my mechanic's girlfriend has a Subaru, and threw the same cel at one time, and he fixed it without buying a new part. Basically he's going to give my car the seafoam treatment and clean the area where it threw the code, and if all goes well it should be an easy 50 dollar fix.

I've run cleaner through the IAC valve and unstuck it before - it's generally a part that can be cleaned rather than replaced.
