Fuel pump install questions - BD Legacy

I wasn't sure where exactly to stick this thread. I would guess the folks most likely to have swapped pumps would be the folks who've added forced induction, though, so this forum seems to make the most sense.

I started a thread in the Legacy forum on NASIOC, and Hondaslayer referred to a larger pump that older Legacys came with. He wasn't sure on the model years, but it looks like my '97 has what I think Hondaslayer was referring to. The plastic bag makes is kind of hard to see, but here's the new pump (from High Flow Performance - http://www.highflowfuel.com/ag-80849.81 ... -2-5l.html (http://www.highflowfuel.com/ag-80849.81166.81172.80667-1997-subaru-legacy-2-5l.html)) vs. the OEM pump:

I haven't figured out how to mount the thing yet. The stock pump has a center outlet instead of an offset one, the filter options don't seem to make sense, and the lower cushion where the pump mounts into the bracket doesn't seem to work out right.

The stock lower cushion has an asymmetrical bump on the bottom that "locks in" with a hole in the bracket, like so:

The lower cushion/sleeve thingy that HFP included with their pump has a bump on the bottom, too, which is basically just a U shape.

When it's seated in the bracket like that picture above, here's how the pump outlet lines up (or doesn't line up, to be more accurate) with the outlet hard line:

If I twist it a bit, and move the pump so that U-shaped bump in the lower cushion/sleeve lines up differently with the hole in the mounting bracket, I can get this:

That lines up a little bit better, but then I've got the pump sitting about 3/4-1" away from the bracket and not really held in place by anything other than the hose. And I'm not even sure the hose can deflect enough in that short distance to account for that offset. :smt017

And then there's the filter options. They included 2 different filters, the tiny one on the left, and the longer one on the right. However, the bigger filter mounts 180deg out (due to the location of the locking tab on it), which means it would never fit into the tank. :smt017

My very limited experience with aftermarket fuel pump installs was on my Mustang years ago, and in that case the 255lph Walbro pump was a direct swap for the stock pump, no changes to anything required. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do with what I've got here for the Legacy, so I would appreciate any advice.

I banded OR ziptied my fuel pump to the mount, as for the sock you should be able to bend it to make it fit. If not, then just use the smaller one. It's not rocket surgery bro, have fun with it! :smt023

I'm going through the exact same thing, picked up a cheap wrx pump and found out it wasn't a bolt in affair. Our OEM pump is quite a bit bigger.

I'm wondering if I can just swap over the whole fuel pump hanger (with the fuel level sending unit) from a wrx or something else that would just bolt in. Are most subaru hangers the same length?
I'm assuming you wanna make sure the sock isn't too far from the bottom of the tank so it will pickup that last little bit of gas.

I started this same thread over on NASIOC and one guy said he used a 342 pump (rather than the 341 pump I was sold) and that it bolted straight in. So, looks like I need to talk to the vendor about swapping out the pump.

hm, those are walbro part numbers? i'll prob pick up a wrx hanger and see if it works. i'll let ya know.

Yeah, those are the Walbro numbers. High Flow Performance (where I bought my pump) offers their own pumps that use the Walbro numbering convention, too.
