So this motor I picked up for my dads subaru was overheated and pretty much free motor. The EJ22 out of a 97, not really sure on if the engine is saveable after pulling the heads. The cylinder wall looks to having scuffing? but the wall is smooth, no groves feeling with my nail so not really sure if it can be honed out or if the pistons need to come out. Heads as well, not really sure if they are healthy or valves are warped. What do you guys think?

it's hard to tell by looking at the valves, they look pretty clean from here, best cheap test to see if they'll leak is to pour some motor oil down the ports, and sit the heads up so they'll stay standing and leave them for a while, any leakage and you've either got a bent valve or one not sealing, either way some work will be needed

Clean it all up and surface the heads and put it together. You will only be out a set of gaskets and a little bit at the machine shop. I'm betting they are fine.
I just did a set of HG's on a 01 Outback that got so hot the timing covers melted. It's back on the road and driving just surfacing the heads.

Dad was on the same boat just sending the heads off and installing new HG gaskets to see how she does. Motor only had 128k supposedly.

Well found another issue while cleaning the block... All the bolts right outside the cylinder walls(coolant passage) upper and lower have rusted to a crazy point where I chipped off some of the rust and the bolt is almost round making it impossible to crack the block apart to get to the crank. Also when pulling the heads(all timing marks set to the top before yanking the timing) the left side head valves had a set of intake valves open and on the other cylinder exhaust valves open... Not sure if this is normal after reading someone had an issue of this being lifter HLA problems on a 2.5, not sure if 2.2 would be the same and same issue.
