I have been having this problem with the speedo going on and off now for a year. It tends to happen more when its hotter out. It will work for a while then shut down for a long time. There have been times that it has gone out for 2-3 days. I have replaced the speedo and i also spent $350 on a new wiring harness in the tranny for the speed sensor and other sensors. It just happens to be that there was a 5 month period that subaru desided to make the sensor one big harness or it would of been a $30 part. What next why didnt either one of those things works. PLEASE SUGGEST ANY IDEAS

Well, I've never tried to troubleshoot a speedometer before, but from an electrical standpoint there isn't much to it.
Either your power is being interrupted or you're not getting any feedback from the speed sensor. There is very little else if anything that feeds into the cluster (other than illumination). These could be loose wires or they could be being interrupted, or in the case of the speed sensor perhaps the sensor is malfunctioning.
I don't know if anyone on the forum has any procedures for testing what the signal ought to be from the speed sensor, but I would try to make those wires accessible so that when you lose the speedometer you can test for a signal with a DVM. You could do the same for the power wires.
I know it's hard to run the car with the instrument cluster dangling, so I like I said I would try to make those wires accessible somehow.
That's my 2 cents worth...

My 99 L is having the same problem. It will work for 5 minutes then shut off for five and so on. It primarly does it to me at night when its colder.
