Hey everyone,
I guess I have posted a few things about my build on other forums but apparently not this one. So here it goes.
Story: I bought this 1998 Legacy GT back in 09 for a couple grand to use as a project. It soon turned into a great daily for a number of years before her role went back to the project direction.
Last year I purchased a wrecked (rear end) 2004 STi for super cheap and proceeded to gut the living daylights out of it. Everything (literally everything) except brakes was transferred over to the Legacy.
Please, any questions or comments are welcome!!
Current Mod list: 296WHP/329WTQ on Cobb Plano dyno

Thanks, but I bought Dead91silvia's Morette headlights. I should receive Tuesday. Going to plastidip them black.
My immediate mods I am working on is a rollbar (not sure if I am going full cage) and the wide body. I think this will consume most of next year. But I will keep this thread updated on my shenanigans.

It seems that everyone who swaps their 2nd-gens does a dash swap, too. Is that necessary, or is it just because it looks good?

I can't really speak for anyone else, but the reason I did was to minimize wire splicing. Using the STi dash literally made everything plug and play.
With that said, we used the STi dash beam which caused neither of the HVAC units to work. So this car is without a/c and heat. But this car is a dedicated track/autoX car now. So it makes no difference to me.
Also, Legacy door cards won't fit with the STi dash. So really, it's in the best interest to use the Legacy dash to have an interior. But all the wiring would need to be spliced.

It was sad as an enthusiast to destroy it. I will try and post a pic of the rear. The rear glass was intact. The car was bought as a salvage at first by previous owner, so this second insedent was a "total" from the insurance.
And that's where I stepped in lol

Sad indeed, blasted ugly lights, all I can think of is the damn Casablanca!
Side note though, I very nearly bought a red GTB limited when I was looking for beast, but didn't have the cash... I later decided that I HAD to have blaaaaaaaaaaaaaack. Funny thing is 2 years ago, I saw the very same car for sale again, for super cheap, with a blown big end, and I very nearly bought it again! But again, cash was even less avail... It was never to be...

Thanks guys. (ah, the not so famous Casablanca Impreza) lol
The Legacy will be going through a transformation this spring, the Morettes will work well with the new wide body panels.
For the meantime I am going to just paint them flat black to match the grill. But when the car gets resprayed I will have the corners red and leave the headlight section black. To this basic affect:

I kinda had the same thought... except, rather than make a "good" Impreza into one, I'd try to get my hands on the real deal...
And instead of "make it fast," my thoughts went more towards "Blow it up." and "cleanse it with fire."
But a fast one might be entertaining, too...
And in no way do Morettes look even an eighth as bad as that. I like them.

Mark, thank you. But I respectfully ask not to answer questions on my behalf. You gave a very incomplete answer.
Don't get me wrong, I welcome conversation and input from people with experience.
The whole point of my thread is to make sure everyone's questions about my swap/build get solid black and white answers.
To answer the original question:
Yes I used the STi steering column and steering rack. HOWEVER, the steering shaft from the STi was too long. So we had to cut about 2-3 inches from the u-joint section and re-weld where it goes in the rack.
But this is with the STi dash beam. Not sure if using the Legacy dash beam would effect anything, but I am sure you'd run into the same issue.

I also have an RE rear diffuser showing up this Monday, so that should be fun to figure out. It is for an FD RX-7, but it'll will work out some how
In the meantime I finally mounted by RPF1's last weekend and did a mock up. 17x9.5 +38 RPF1's with 275/40 RE760 sports wrapped around. I WILL need some spacers however, so the track will get about an inch wider on each side. Once my panels come in, the real fun begins.

This was a very rough mock-up. I had two jack-stands holding up each side. They pushed the sides up farther than they are going to sit.
This kind of "tucked in" the sides a little. When they sit in their final position (a little lower) the diffuser will be about 1/4" wider than the bumper on each side.

Here we are! We had to trim some for my exhaust to fit (3" titanium) but other than that, it was a straight forward affair. The sides are mounted to the bumper, and the front (towards front of the car) is mounted to the spare tire well. We still need to trim a tiny bit here and there and make final adjustments, but we did it.
I will post a couple more pics later this afternoon of the mounting sections and the cutout around the exhaust. (Sorry, but all I have are iPhone pics)

No problem, I'm sure it'll be no problem for you. We were pretty surprised (and pleased) how little we had to do.
The pictures don't really do it justice, but we took pictures a way to make the diffuser show up as much as we could (for the sake of this thread).

Last night I got a second wind when I got home and did some work on the passenger rear panels. I cut out the bumper portion and am brainstorming (currently) on how to get the fender to sit as straight as possible.
I will be getting the rear panel scalloped and pulled so it will become a support and push the middle section (by the gas door) out slightly to meet up with the door portion. I don't like how the portion on the door "flares" out towards the bottom. A few remedy options are there, just need to determine the best route. Stayed tuned for some more (major) fitment updates this weekend. Thanks!

I have the section that goes there. I haven't had time to mock it on, but it will round off the rear nicely :)
I want to put the coilovers on first, I need to see if/how much of the bumper needs to be cut.

Okay, so I've been getting back on track with this again. First a rundown of what's been done and then pics. My final "painted and finished" date is set by October of this year.
- Tein Monoflex coilovers from an 04-05 STi. Getting custom front camber plates made so the camber adjustment is correct. (see pic of issue)
- Got an APR carbon GTC-200 wing. Will have welded mounting points placed in next few weeks.
- More trimming and fine tuning the wide body panels.
This evening we are going to be adhering the panels to metal!! Then next week start to fill/blend panels to car. I will post periodically up to the day I drop her off for paint :)
Here I lessened the gap considerably:

Yep, we are going to do a carbon fiber delete panel. (I love carbon fiber)
A few pics of getting started with filling in and blending. I am concentrating on one panel at a time. I am using 3M Bondo short strand glass-filler. I have done two applications on the top of the fender and just one on the fender to door section, will be building it a bit more the next few days.
Never working with bondo before, I now see this is where my time will be spent.

So, slowly but surely I've been chipping away at this. Most recently I have "finished" the front driver fender and will "finish" the front passenger today. I say "finished" meaning that there is primer on but does need some fine tuning.
Here is the front driver. After I took these pictures, I did sand down and apply a few more layers of regular filler. So it is better now, but just to give you the idea. (The dimples you see are gone now with the extra work post-pictures)
The bottom two pictures are a before (passenger side) and after (driver side) of what I did to the bottom section.
Been busy, but I'll update soon. Starting the rear sections this week :)

looks better then I was expecting, do you have plans to work the upper fender out to get the stock body line back? I think that would finish it off nicely. Should be a bad ass whip when done. Have you figured out what you are doing on the sunroof? Any decent fab shop should be able to make you a sunroof delete panel out of 18g Sheet metal with a bead rolled edge. You can then have it tack/plug welded to the factory roof skin where it channels down into the car (stamped portion) then fill the edge with self leveling seam sealer and you are good to go.

I left a small bit (1 1/2") of body line carry over onto the fender. The way I had positioned the fender I am unable to carry it through the entirety of the fender. A small carry over was a good way to incorporate the body line to the fender and avoid a bunch of extra uncertain work.
I am having a carbon fiber panel delete made. I am taking this route for two reasons:
1) Doing a sheet metal would add more work to have the end product look flawless (aka too lazy)
2) I like the idea of it still looking like I have a sunroof, plus I'll take any ounce of weight savings I can that high up on the car.

Did work on the passenger rear section this weekend. Hopefully finish up the driver side this week. Some before/after pics:

So I have the GT spoiler on now and I finished up the driver side rear panel (no pics of panel yet).
We will be reinforcing the spoiler from the inside and doing the side skirts and (hopefully) the rear bumper. Sorry for the crappy iPhone pics.
Please note: I understand the wing isn't for everyone, but it is very fitting for the car.

So all the panels are officially glued and blended. There are many imperfections to still smooth out and some gaps here and there to take care of. We had a local car show this Saturday (Gillman Subaru Big Event 6) where she debuted her wide body.
As of now, I am going to take a little break and do some work on my S2000 and Excursion (they took a backseat for a good while). A few things will still happen before paint, so I will update accordingly.
Until then, pictures!!!!!

Really starting to take shape. The black on red is excellent. And I LOVE the covers on the Morettes!

It's looking great!
and, :smt023 to the covers!!! I may have tried to find some morette's had I known that the covers were even available. The (what I thought was lack-of) a cover was the reason I didn't even look for a pair.

I had that same idea for my Morettes but the covers never came up while I still had them on.
I was planning to put a slight tint on the cover too.
Looks awesome.

Hey just curious, how did you fit the Impreza Interior in there? did you need any custom brackets? New to Subarus and their Lego like parts catalog. I own a Legacy RSK and love the impreza interior.
