Transmission Jack

Hey guys,

I have to drop my trans this week and I was wondering if any of the York guys would have a transmission jack that they would let me borrow? I am not sure if this is the right place to post this but I am on my way out to work. I'll check again tonight.

I would see if a place like autozone or even your local power tool rental place rents them, otherwise, Harbor Freight probably has a cheap one you could buy.

a regular floor jack works ok if you position it right. Ive taken off and replaced the MT on many cars by myself.

I've used a combination of engine hoise at the front and floor jack at the tail with good results before on a automatic.

used it only a few times over the years but it has worked well. With a 20% off coupon, it is decent price wise. I am on the left coast or would be happy to lend it.

thank for all the info guys. I am gonna be dropping my trans on Monday. Any tips or tricks to make it go smoothly? I am helping a friend do a clutch on an 09 Forester tomorrow but that will be on a lift at my bosses.

Just make darn sure the tranny is drained fully before removal lol First transmission I ever removed, I was on a creeper, pulled it off and set it on my chest (I was the tranny jack lol) and nasty stinky 75w90 poured all over me as it was not fully drained hahaha. Man I stunk for a few days.

Subaru's are pretty darn easy IMO compared to most. Doubt you will have any issues.

If you don't want to drain the tranny, a regular old spray paint can cap fits right inside the output seal and you will barely lose any fluid.

Why are you dropping the tranny? I am a firm believer that if you are doing clutch work it it easier / faster to pull the motor, even more so if you are not using a lift.

well, I am helping a friend do the clutch on the forester and he wanted to do it that way. My transmission I have to drop because it went BOOM... So, I am getting another one and tearing open the busted one to see what went out. What made me really mad was my co-workers were all up on the hill watching me leave working taking bets on what I'd break next on my car... I just fixed a whole bunch of stuff. Slow go'ed the stop sign and boom. Oh well tis life and older cars.

G1217, thanks for offer the borrow though. I just moved back to the east coast not long ago but I spent 5 years in Pheonix before I moved back! The car scene is crazy out there haha.

Update as far as the transmission. We did the clutch on the '09 Forester in 7 1/2 hours. 1 hour over the subaru book time. So we were happy about that. I am gonna post pictures of the pressure plate and throw out bearing when I get the chance. The pressure plate was toast. There was only 4 or 5 fingers left on it. I told the friend we fixed it for that that shouldn't happen a car with only 65 thousand on it. Told him I was gonna send him to driving school hahaha. I am dropping my trans and doing exhaust next week. Gonna get the car all ready and drop the exhaust and driveshaft so that I can leave the car on the lift the least amount of time possible.
