View Full Version : Door locks worn on BG (edit)

The drivers side lock is worn out on my Outback (BG). It opens fine from the inside, it's just that the key won't turn from the outside. I've tried other keys and sprayed it with lube, etc... I figured I'd just swap the driver and passenger door locks. I'm not sure how to get the door pads off with out boogering them up. I can't find anywhere that shows this.

How do I get the door pads off?

Popped it right off. I swear I searched first.

EDIT: Now that I got the pad off, I realized the lock looks (almost) impossible to remove. It also looks like the locks may not be a simple swap. Are the left and right locks the same? I don't want to spend all day to get them out and find I can't just trade them left for right and be stuck.
I don't have keyless entry so to get in the car I have to unlock the pass. door and reach over and unlock the drivers door from the inside. I'm pretty sure the tumblers are worn in the lock.
Maybe a locksmith could make me a better key? The keys are all worn out as well. The last keys I had made were from the old worn ones. Can a dealer make me a key from a code? I only have one of the original keys.

On the upside, while I had the car in the garage I changed all my center console light bulbs. I love this forum!

Ok, I took the lock cylinder out of the drivers door. It sucked but I got it out.
It looks like the left and rights could be interchanged if someone needed to.
I took the cyl to a locksmith and he said one tumbler was stuck and he got it freed up for me.
I took my original key with the code on it and he made a new key from the code. The key was so badly worn that it wouldn't move all the tumblers far enough to work the lock. The new key works with all the locks and the ignition (duh) so I'm going to go back and get a few more made. He didn't charge me to mess with the lock and the new key was seven bucks. Anyway, I answered my own questions but maybe it will help someone else someday.
