Black Sheep
From what I've learned so far is this very generation of Legacy's have been avoided by the majority of those interested in nosing and upgrading Subaru's. I plan to be one of the few, I like a good challenge. I started out in 2007 with a 2000 Subaru Impreza 2.5RS sedan, auto, and stock as ever! She and I travelled long distances, commuted to work and school, it got me through high school and almost through college. I put 130k miles on the Impreza, along with every bit of blood and sweat into herI bought her with 70k miles, and sold her with 200k miles for $3,800.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2014/02/471342FEFC984AD7AE088159145CBAAE_zpssco5-1.jpg
From there I purchased my current 2002 Subaru Legacy L wagon. I'm at the point in my life where I need more room. My girlfriend have a dog and I am running a mobile business called Equipped. Transporting parts in the Impreza was not easy one bit. A wagon or Forester was on my radar, but I am very happy with my Legacy so far.
I bought her with 144k miles for $3,400, completely stock with the head gaskets, timing belt, and water pump done. I was able to save a few parts off the Impreza. IE: 16x7" RS 5-spoke wheels, 02 WRX front seats, Scangauge2, Subaru all-weather mats, and my Yakima roof rack.
This is how I got her:

So I picked up the car on a Thursday. That following Friday I had 28% tint installed and took off those ugly hub caps:

That same day I put the RS wheels on, installed the scangauge, threw my all weather mats in and swapped the WRX seats in!

So I'm currently out of town visiting my girlfriends family for the holidays and won't be back to my new baby until after the New Year. As for future plans, I intend to keep her fairly stock. I'd like an Outback front bumper and fog lights, Outback side skirts, and the woodgrain trim. This car will be more of functional / recreation car. The girlfriend and I love going to the mountains and with the Impreza I missed my ground clearance. I'm also going to clean up some spots like the head lights, that grill needs some work, removal of some of the trunk badges, possibly decrease some body roll and otherwise enjoy the ride! So stay tuned and I hope to meet some awesome people here!

Much more to come to stay tuned and I'll try to do a better job at keeping this updated as I go!
Coming up soon, I'll be working on the speakers, only 2 out of 4 of them work for some odd reason, she needs an oil change, i would like to tint the tail lights all red with the exception of the reverse section until I can afford some awesome JDM clear & red ones! Considering dipping the wheels black until spring, and some various little details like debadging the hatch, finding a spoiler, and the whole Outback conversion (bumpers, side skirts, mud flaps, & wood grain trim). So do stay tuned but be patient, i'm a college student lol

Suspension wise I'm going to stick to stock height, I'd like a front strut brace, and a thicker rear sway bar to tighten up the rear a bit. Other than that I don't know yet, I need to do more research.
Small update: Buddy of mine runs a company called Sir Shift (http://www.sirshift.com) making shift knobs out of wood. He made me a custom one last night for the Legacy!
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2014/01/0CC337D1D1AC47A0A5ECECF89295BE4D_zpse2dk-1.jpg (http://s60.photobucket.com/user/teece06/media/Leggy%20Wag/0CC337D1-D1AC-47A0-A5EC-ECF89295BE4D_zpse2dkhlie.jpg.html)
It feels great and looks great! Can't wait to get some Outback wood grain on the dash to tie it all together!
Note! For anyone curious how I got my stock automatic shift knob off, it simply twists right off. Granted it's been on there since factory so it'll be a bit tight but give it a twist and it'll loosen right up, keep spinning until it comes right off, it'll take about a minute or so, Subaru put a lot of threads on there lol.

Small update:
Snapped a quick shot of the front of the car from a distance so everyone can get an idea how the front grille looks with the chrome plastidipped away. But hopefully I can work something out with a member so i can snag a LGT grille!

Today the weather was fair and I took full advantage just as I always will!
Here's how the rear looked when I started:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2014/01/75C2DD8E4FC445FA8EE742D32E1A9037_zpsfxlb-1.jpg

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2014/01/D1C26CC5DED64DBAAA47F066B6FBBD5C_zpsuaoe-1.jpg

No more amber! I used a spray tint to turn the tail lights all red as a temporary mod until I can snag some sweet JDM red/clears.
I wonder what tomorrow will bring :)

Oh and for what it's worth, I have taken a couple shots of the car with a camera, rather my iPhone. I'll try to upload and post those soon so you guys have some decent pictures of my car to look at.
I know she's not much, and you guys may not see me post a whole lot. But that's only because I'm flipping through all the threads I can to learn the ins and outs of the BH model wagons. I need to know everything I can about them before I really start cracking into it. It also doesn't help that it's mid-winter and I don't particularly like working on my car in the cold.
Oh and here's the link to my last Subaru build. It's some what long but it's nice to see where I'm coming from. My last Impreza came a long way as well and I plan on putting the same hard work I put into it as I do for this wagon. Also, I bargain hunt like a mofo, so I don't know how many new parts I'll buy as opposed to second hand, but like I said, just please be patient with me and all the questions I may ask. I only want to learn so I can do thing correctly the first time.
I'M RIGHT HERE ELIOT, LOOK!!!! (http://www.rs25.com/forums/f145/102883-plastidip-all-things-subaru-13.html)

To be fair, your mistakes and successes are much of the reason we have the info that we do now. There was very little info before you went and swapped nearly everything on the Blitzen.

I appreciate the kind words, but I somewhat second amgarrety's statement. Sometimes we make mistakes like jumping into something and yet we learn a lot more than we may have taking the safe route. I've done that but now with this car, I want to be well prepared.
On to the update!
I modded the intake set up a little by removing everything shy of the torque box. Nice little baby rumble I hear on acceleration lol. Then I received my honeycomb LGT front grill. I Plastidipped it to update the faded black and get rid of the chrome border it has. It's installed now and it looks great. My buddy is going to fix my headlights and from there I plan to crack them open to black out the housings. I also applied my company windshield banner and then after work, a couple friends and I went and took some pictures with my DSLR. So onto the pictures.

What kind of company has you put a banner on your windshield?
teeceRS
01-21-2014, 12:55 PM
I run a side business called Equipped Motorworks. The banner is great advertisement because I attend car shows & meets all the time, and I often get questions asking what "Equipped" on my windshield is and that's how i get my business other than word of mouth and my website & facebook page. It's not a requirement for myself or the people that work with me to have one on their car, we like to have them. We do an assortment of work to the exterior, interior, suspension, engine work and variable maintenance. Check me out on facebook or my website. http://www.facebook.com/getequippedclt OR http://www.equippedmotorworks.weebly.com
As I divulge deeper into research for an exhaust set up, I think temporarily I'm going to weld in something universal like this:

You do need to do an update on your thread to be in compliance with the MR1 rules though. Not at all hard to do. If you look in my sig, click on either one of my Legacy's (links) and you will see a good way to set it up. :smt023

I love those RS wheels, but they just look at so small on the wagon. If you can find them I think the BG era gt-b wheels or EDM bug eye STi 17s would set it off amazing. Not saying it looks bad, just a little out of place I suppose. Either way I look forward to where this one goes!

I definitely underestimated the overall size of the Legacy in comparison to my old Impreza haha. They do look a bit small on the wagon, maybe more tire will help! haha I might pick up a set of hawkeye wrx 7 spoke 17s for cheap. I'm from Boston and I know all about snow, and I know that 90% of people from the north, living here in NC say that "this is nothing, what are you worried about", but what they don't take into consideration is; NC has very little winter preparation vehicles and maybe 50 snow plows for the entire county (and it's a very large county). So under that small layer of snow, is a nice thick layer of ice.
Now I know all that very well, so later that night, my friends and I took our cars out for some fun hahahaha

I definitely underestimated the overall size of the Legacy in comparison to my old Impreza haha. They do look a bit small on the wagon, maybe more tire will help! haha I might pick up a set of hawkeye wrx 7 spoke 17s for cheap. I have a buddy that's looking to get rid of his set, so we'll see if that happens are not haha.
I have 16's on my BE legacy wagon too. When it came time to buy new tire I went with 20/60's and it made a difference for sure as the setup looks bigger than stock tires.
Ooh, that H6 has a Subaru Ownership badge, too.

not a clue. I found it on my other forum (rs25.com). it was used an example for the dudes thread I had commented on 2 years ago. I wish I knew!
So I'm fully on board for lowering the wagon! Looking into different coilover options and learning literally as much about the suspension of my generation so I can build a fully functional but low wagon.
I've successfully purchased all the pieces I need to convert my dash trim from L to Outback (dark) woodgrain for approx. $50! I'll be ordering my JDM red 02-07 WRX hazard switch to really set it all off!
Also, more snow is expected for the Carolina's this week so look out for some pictures if i choose to venture, they are predicting ice, so I may stay home. My 3rd row LED bulbs came in and they look fantastic! Considering Vibrant for muffler solutions and other things are on the horizon!
Stay tuned

I hate to say it, but the WRX hazard switch will not fit straight in. You want the S401 hazard switch which is the only red switch that will fit natively after having the RHD bracket changed out. the switch itself is pretty different in shape.
This is the S401 switch:

Made a trip out to the mountains to a guy that picks up Legacy's and Forester's and Outbacks at auctions. Guy had an insane amount of parts.
Like this factory Outback Limited spoiler, I asked him for it but he refused to separate it from the hatch. While I was there I snagged a pair of Outback side skirts, a pair of GT fog lamps and some other odds and ends that I needed to finally bring the L to a full car again!
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2014/02/5E104633C222463DA006CF86CCCFD3BF_zpso2z5-1.jpg
I'm always doing a little testing and experimenting with Plastidip and it's various applications. So I tried something a little different. I used the Gold Metalizer and laid about 6 coats on the outside of the lamp, check it out:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2014/02/6D2FA83D53C14D7BB596F199D08FBE16_zps0iva-1.jpg
I'm having trouble getting anything out of the lamps so far. I'm going to test a different set of bulbs and if that doesn't work the connectors may be dirty. We'll see what happens and once I get them working I'll decide if the dip effected the lamp enough to give me yellow.
Here are the side skirts mocked up on the car, they're isn't a scratch on them and they fit perfectly. For the time being I'm going to dip them flat black until I can get them color matched to the car:

i'm still on the lookout for an outback front bumper and i'm looking forward to installing the rest of my dark Outback wood grain trim! I also plan on doing some exhaust work within the next month or so. I have some bills to take care of so small updates are to come. The side skirts should be on in a couple weeks. Stay tuned all!
You do know that you'll have fitment issues with an Outback bumper on Legacy fenders, right? The Outback fenders have a flare that continues down into the bumper.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/10/DSCN9840_zps825c3d48-1.jpg (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/SubaMuse/media/DSCN9840_zps825c3d48.jpg.html)
Now, this is a 3rd-gen OB bumper on a 2nd-gen Legacy, but the principle and effect is the same, you'll still get it ducking under the fender.

Alright so I'm having some difficulty. I got the factory GT fog lamps and the factory switch. The car is already pre-wired for fog lights. I plugged everything in and I have to light. I checked for a fuse. There is one. The switch is plugged into the correct slot on the dash.
I'm about to clean the plugs in the bumper and if that doesn't work I have an extra set of bulbs laying around I'll try. Any other suggestions in the meantime are welcome.
I'm not too concerned with the gap, and that is incredibly tempting. What meet are you referencing ?

I'm a dumb dumb. I figured the relay for the fogs would be in the dash so it never occurred to me (at first) to check the fuse box under the hood. I was running out of options so I did just that and hey what do you know. No relay haha. Off to autozone, if only our cars came with extra relays just like they do with fuses. Pfft. Derp derp

Learned that the larger tires will hit the perches on the struts. I'm not really interested in raising the car much. So I'm just gonna go back to light off-roading and build the wagon to be very fun spirited driving monster!
That means i'm back on the look out for an outback front bumper, etc!!

I have 205/60/16 tires on my legacy, and it clears the strut perches, and it fills in the wheels gap nicely.

I am running 225/55R17 on 17x7 with an offset of 48 on Legacy KYB struts. That is standard Outback size on a 17" rim. I also have run 225/60R16 on a 16x6.5 w/48 offset. Both run real close to the perch, but I do not rub as long as the front camber is 0 or slightly positive. When I first put my struts on, I had a very slight (-0.6 degrees) camber, and I did rub on the perch on one side until it was corrected.

Also, I had the afternoon to myself and it was so nice out that I took the plunge and wrapped that ugly ass grey headliner with some new plaid material! I love me some plaid! haha I know I know!
I had a small scare this weekend. I pulled up to work and noticed a bit of smoke coming out of the hood, so I looked down at the Scanguage and it read 251*, so I immediately shut the car off. I open the hood to find coolant every where. Instead of panicking I start checking every seal section; hg, valve covers, spark plugs, and it's all dry. Starting to get nervous, I call my buddy. He came by ran water through the system and there was a nickel sized slash/hole in the upper radiator hose. Luckily my girlfriend and him and his gf ran down the street, got me a new hose (with a 10% dealership discount) and some new coolant. She's running better than ever again. Whew what a relief! My buddy said the hose simply dry rotted and broke. I guess it's time to look into some silicone hoses :naughty: .
Well my weekend got much better from there on. Last night I found a guy asking anyone with a 3rd generation L/GT Legacy if they're interested in trading bumper for bumper. He has an 03 Outback bumper with fog lights and wants the base/GT bumper so he can run a different style lip. So come mid-May I'll be meeting with him to trade bumper, fog lights, & beams with no money involved and a friend of a friend will be color matching the bumper for me ;) :D :naughty: oh and it has a v-limited lip on it, and i'll probably sell it if i don't like the look of it.
Said bumper:

I don't fully understand. What you mean Huffer?

That is genius. Now, the non-syncing speed of the window motors will drive you crazy. :D
My BE's front windows go down and up at about the same rate, so there is no annoyance with this switch. My BG's windows are a pretty different speed however.

I haven't noticed any delay on my bh9. Especially since I keep playing with it haha. Meh I guess the jokes on Huffer. Sorry boss
The passenger window going up in my wagon is quite a bit slower than the drivers side. But it doesn't bother me because it goes up on it's own. It's not like I have to hold the switch up longer.

haha. I'm with yaya on this one. I'll take the derp window over having to hold the switch!
Also, sent the money the other day for a pink STi rep front strut bar, got it fairly cheap, so I'm really happy about that!

It's GC specific. I thought it'd still fit. I don't mind it hitting the firewall, but cowl? Do you mean the hood?

Where the windshield wiper mechanism is, is what I am calling a cowl... Perhaps that is the wrong word. The spacing apart and bolt pattern is correct.. but the strut towers are much closer to the firewall on a BE/BH than on the GC.

So I dipped my wheels in grey in hopes to achieve a color similar to what the new WRX wheels are. I did a coat of black and 5 coats of grey. It is not what I thought it would be. So after careful consideration I've decided to peel the dip, and I'm gonna take the time to prep the wheels to paint them bronze.
Stay tuned.

Strut brace showed up today. Got a text from my roommate. I'm going through a rough time. I broke up with my gf of 4 years last week and I'm in the process of moving into my sisters house temp.
I'm gonna clean up the brace and if needed I'll spray new coats of pink on the ends and of course I'll post plenty of pics!
I picked up a 04 FXT rear seat and another set of Yakima crossbars with factory roof rail attachments for cheap at a junkyard.
The seats don't fit bc of the brackets :/ so that's for sale and my search for a Wrx rear seat continues. I'm also considering wrapping my trunk floor in a new material. Something durable and dark.
Crossbars will go on in a few weeks and I'll throw my bike attachments and fairing on from the other crossbars I have.
And lastly, I sent the money for a pair of uninstalled Hella Supertone Horns to a member on here. Can't wait to have those again! I plan to dip them either camo green or tan. Not sure yet.
So a lot happening, stay tuned!

Later that same night while slowing down to take a left turn onto a side street, a guy came out of nowhere and hit the wagon. He must have been going about 40 mph, he said he was rushing to work and didn't notice i was slowing down. Luckily it's mostly cosmetic, the bumper is messed up, theres a small dent under the tail lamp, and some metal under the bumper appears to be pushed in a bit. Called the police, filed my claim. Now i'm just waiting for my appraisal. I hope to snag an Outback rear bumper out of this!

Not sure if I mentioned this to you in the past (I've told SOMEONE, I know,) but the Outback bumper will curve under your Legacy fenders, as it's got the beginning's of the Outback's flare. To avoid this (And look rad as hell,) You might want to think about swapping to Outback fenders.
Admittedly, this is worse on my 2nd gen with third-gen bumper, but you get the idea.

you did tell me lol and i've read up on it, but the legacy bh fenders have somewhat of a flare on the fender as well, so it won't be as much of a gap as the legacy bg see. Thanks though!

06-16-2014, 11:42 AM
The flare on the Legacy finders is much smaller than that on the Outback fenders. Since you are going the opposite direction as me (outback bumper on legacy instead of the legacy bumper on my outback), there will be a bit of an overbite, but it wont stand out as much as my issue did.
No matter what, it will not be a perfect fit, but it wont be that bad.

i think it owuld be sick to either plasti dip the bottom of the rear bumper behind the mud gaurds or get rear spats, that would blend with the side skirts nicely
teeceRS
06-16-2014, 08:14 PM
i've considered doing that. Since I plan on getting a civic mugen replica front lip and I probably won't paint it. So if and when I get that then i'll decide whether or not to dip the lower half of the OB bumper. Eventually I plan to have the OB front bumper & side skirts all color matched to the rest of the car just like the OB rear bumper.

Successful day today! I faced my fear and cleared both sets of headlights I own. I did the factory L lights; clear and blacked out the housing, and I did the Outback lenses; cleared only. I considered painting some of the OB reflectors so it'd be more unison of black but I'm not sold on how I like it from the L housings so I opted against it for now.
I also picked up a set of Hella Optilux Yellow fog bulbs for when I get the OB front bumper, but it doesn't look like that's happening anytime soon, so I went back to Pep Boys and exchanged them for the correct bulbs for the GT lights I have. Much more yellow and a lot brighter too. Pictures will come later!

I've always seen truck guys flying the American flag or military flags out the back of their truck and had the biggest urge to do the same thing on the wagon. So I brainstormed and this is my outcome:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2014/07/DD51C1BE8679474E9C5B6C8989593787_zps5bxj-1.jpg
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2014/07/085A367E09604576AD365256A44A84F1_zps1hin-1.jpg
I bought 1 -- 3ft x 4ft American flag, 1 -- 5 ft x 3/4 in PVC pipe, and 1 -- 90 degree elbow (to use as a cap) all for $13. Wedged the pipe down in the back seat with the window closed on it and the flag hangs out plenty and flies beautifully as I drive down the road! I couldn't be happier with my outcome!
Also went to the junkyard today to hopefully find an AC compressor, sadly they were all taken. I did however find a no-name short ram intake pipe that I got for $7 (pictured below). I just need to pick up a black rubber coupler to attach it to the intake manifold and I can throw my AEM filter on it. No more hybrid intake set up! I also plan to paint the pipe black, I hate chrome! I also picked up the wheel well liner I've been needing since I bought the car for the passenger side for $4 (not pictured). Now I can build a cold-air intake with confidence I'll be able to keep the filter away from the elements and she'll be able to breath better air!

The strut bar is GC fitment STi replica. All I had to do to get it to fit was bend the cowl where the wiper arms sit a tiny bit, but that's it. And by bend it I just mean flare the edges a bit to squeeze the bar under it. Despite that it fits perfectly.

Plastidip holds up very well in high temperature conditions. My engine bay on this car and my old one is dipped in black and i have never had any issue with it "melting". I do believe it takes a very high temperature to melt rubber.
If you look at the second photo you'll see that I sprayed the black directly onto the rotor and considering the heat and friction of the pads; it simply comes right off and all other areas are left the way they are. But thanks guys I think it looks great too.........

I may take the bumper off just so i'm not uncomfortable. I've dealt with tight spaces and running intake piping is a bitch with the bumper on lol. Stay tuned for that.
Any advice on the ac compressor? Straight forward swap?

Dang I didn't realize I haven't posted in over a month! Well only a moderate amount of change has happened. So let's recap:
Picked up a Magnaflow muffler and had it welded on

It sounds amazing!

Then scored some killer deals online on some audio. Swapped out the front speakers with Pioneer speakers, and i've picked up a 10" Kicker subwoofer that I'm pairing with my Kicker 300 amp. It's all going where the spare goes. I'll just use the rally spare over that crappy donut.

I'm unsure as to what you're talking about and next time guys when quoting something try not to quote everything, especially to ask one thing or a small statement. Just food for thought.
And yes, seized slider pins are common in older generation Impreza's and Legacy's.
No updates on the car right now guys. I've been in and out of the hospital with chronic ankle pain. So she hasn't even been driven much lately :/
cheers

Thank you so much for saying this. I didn't want to be that guy who's not a mod, complaining at people in someone else's thread, but that was kinda driving me crazy.

Nice progress. Is the front of your car higher than the rear? If so, might want to get 1/4" rear saggy butt spacers from Paranoidfabrications.com

Finally wired in the subwoofer and I couldn't be happier, wired in a pair of Sony Xplod 6.5" speakers I picked up for uber cheap in the back doors. I also had my headlights restored, I sprayed black Plastidip on the upper half of the car, I'm hopefully picking up a rear diff skid plate for fairly cheap as well soon and I swapped out the LEGACY L badges on the trunk lid for my Subaru ownership badge and a GT badge.

The lights are independently wired to a switch under the dash, and mounted behind the grill from the rad support using two L brackets mounted at the hood latch bracket. I cut out the center of my original L grill to ensure plenty of clearance for the lights.
