View Full Version : 3rd gen wagon spoiler options
I've seen large and small wings on Outback and Legacy wagons, but there seems to be no defining difference in the models. I've seen both types of wing on both types of wagon on both pre and post facelift cars. Rkrenicki suggested that the longer wing might be JDM, but I don't think so...
Anyone able to explain?

Pictures would help here because I have NO idea what you are talking about. Are you talking about OEM, aftermarket, or both? You say Outback and JDM, but there were no 3rd Gen Outbacks in Japan.
My point - post pictures and I can identify for you.

I only suggested that it 'might' be JDM because for 2000-2004, the Wagon OEM wing part number never changed in the US. It is the same part number for both Legacy and Outback.
It is possible that there was a design change during that time, but Subaru loves to change part numbers on us so I highly doubt that they would reuse the part number for a different wing.
The larger spoiler:

Now Lancaster6 says his is an LGT wing... But I've seen them on non-modified Outbacks more than a few times...
The smaller wing:

And I can not, for the life of me find a better picture of that smaller one...

Huh.... I guess that just goes to show that I don't know as much as I'd like to think I do.
I have never seen that smaller one. I know it isn't in Japan anyway....
Maybe check out cars101.com or search pictures in Edmunds or autotrader.... 'cause I am definitely stumped.

I have only seen the larger one. I pulled a larger one off an Outback at a pick and pull. The more I look at the smaller one it looks shaped like a 2nd gen spoiler. It does not follow the curve of the hatch in the middle. It looks more straight like a 2nd gen spoiler. It sits on top of the hatch too. The larger one sits more off the back of the hatch.

From what I understand, all of the spoilers in the 2000-2004 model years are dealer installed options...
Perhaps some dealers put the earlier version of the wing (1995-1999) on because they had some kicking around, or otherwise did not know the difference?
Hmm... could be... but it looks like it fits well. I'll bring my 2nd-gen spoiler with me tooday, just to see if it fits on the BH.

I would think the second gen spoiler to be completely different giving the lines on the hatch.
I did actually see 2 long spoilers and one short one on my ride to Somers and back today. So there had to be two different options.
Oh, and the short one looks stupid! Like a toe nail clipping stuck to the top of the hatch. Lol.

speaking of spoiler options. Has anyone attempted to mate an 06/07 WRX Wagon spoiler onto a 00-04 hatch? The curiousity is killing me, my buddy thinks it'll work but we haven't had the time to take his off and try to line it up with mine. So all I'm asking is has anyone seen it done or know anyone that's tried? lol

I think I've only seen the larger spoiler installed on the BH. There's a guy down the street from me with a VDC Outback (BH) with the same larger spoiler that I have, and his is definitely a dealer installed option, and the guy I bought mine from had a BH LGT, so I thought the ones on Outbacks and Legacies were the same in the US. I'll start looking closer at wagons with wings now though.
