Lets go through the motions.
1. Denial
2. Anger
3. Depression
4. Acceptance
The quicker we get to #4, the better off we'll all be.
Popular opinion seems to not be in favor of this new look, but I personally like it better than the 5th generation. I won't be making any true decisions on how I feel about it though until I see it in person and learn more about what it has to bring to the table.

I actually like it. I like the new Ford Fusions, and that seems to be what Subaru is copying, so it's a plus for me. I even see the Eyesight system there - double bonus! So I may hold off on replacing the H6 and try to convince the wife that she needs a '15 LGT (they better have the option for 6mt though).

Aww, I wasn't in before the "it looks just like X" comments.
Wait.
It looks just like a car!!!
Actually, I like it. The grille isn't fantastic with all the chrome, but all it takes is a little plasti-dip or a mesh grille and I think it will look nice :)
It is a bit Ford-ish, but those are nice looking cars.

I didn't see that in the article.
There are no official details about the car yet, but the new Legacy should be offered with the 2.0-liter and/or 2.5-liter four-cylinder boxer engines from the Impreza and Forester, as well as the new-generation turbocharged boxer engine from the WRX.
It looks like a turbo will be back (hopefully) but they don't say anything about transmissions and it's all unofficial. I also really doubt the 2.0 N/A motor will be on the Legacy here in the US, so they may be working with international information.

We'll definitely hear more details when it is unveiled on the 8th, but as of now, there are no official details. I don't see why there wouldn't be a manual version though. Maybe the GT version might even get a 6-speed option, since they put the 6-speed on the new WRX. As far as I'm aware, prior to the new WRX, the 6-speed was reserved for STI variants only.
I also really doubt the 2.0 N/A motor will be on the Legacy here in the US, so they may be working with international information.
Am I wrong in thinking they went to the 2.0L direct injection engine in the most recent Legacy? I think MRLancaster's 2013 Legacy is 2.0L.
I obviously am just speculating as well. I really can't wait to see the real specs.

Hold on. I know that the '09 LGT Spec B got a 6mt. So it wouldn't be a first to put it on the sports model.
If they neuter the LGT like they did with the Forester XT and don't offer a manual, then they're doing themselves (and their fans) a serious disservice.

For what it's worth, even though the spec.B isn't technically STI, I still group it in the same category. I'm referring to the use of a 6mt as the standard choice for a manual transmission, where as the '09 spec.B was more or less the odd one out, since the other spec.Bs got 5mt transmissions (I believe).

The FA20 from a BRZ would be OK in that car. It would need a little more torque however.

1. The current N/A Legacy gets a 6 speed manual. Has for a couple of years. A GT version may get different gearing oriented towards performance, though, if it gets one at all.
2. If MRLancaster got a USDM Legacy, it was a 2.5L. Maybe you're thinking of the new Legacies getting the FB motor? At least I think it was FB, but it's not direct injection, at least there's nothing on cars101 about that. It's a timing chain, too, which is cool.
The FA20 from a BRZ would be OK in that car. It would need a little more torque however.
I don't expect we'll see that version of that motor in anything but the BRZ. It seems like they engineered it pretty specifically for that car.
edit: corrected the engine code to FB instead of FA.
Thoughts:
-Not really as... Subaru as previous generations. it's more generic looking. But it looks alright.
-Much better proportioned than the 5th gen.
-I'm having trouble picturing it lifted, for the Outback.
Hopes:
1: Wagon. If they don't offer a wagon, I will be sad. Very sad.
2: Manual. Subarus need Manuals. That's all there is to it.
3:Purple. that car up there would look spectacular in a midnight purple-ish color, even if it's only limited to a top-end model, it should still exist.
4:DO NOT copy the WRX hood scoop if a Turbo version is in the works. that would murder the looks. It would murder them with a rusty fork.

The FA is the 2.0L Direct injection motor currently only in the BRZ. The FB is the new chain motor that comes in 2.0L in the impressas and 2.5L in the foresters and Legacies.
And the new six speed that comes in the Legacies is not the same as a spec B or STi tranny, it's a cable shifted extended version of the same 5 speed tranny we,ve all been blowing up for years.

1. like the headlights, subaru seems to be sticking with that style and thats a good thing
1.5. like shifter position (unique?)
2. interior reminds me of new BMW 328I, almost exactly (rad)
3. Front grill thing reminds of scaled down Ford fusion (which they borrowed from Aston Martin DB9)
4. too much going on with steering wheel buttons (agreed)
5. turbo would be sweet, wagon would be sweeter (doubt it on wagon part though) (only the unique markets getting subaru "Levorg" which is the new turbo wagon)

Ah, right, I knew something I was saying wasn't quite right - FB, not FA. Although the 2015 WRX will be FA20 (STi won't, still EJ257).
And yes, I'm aware that the regular Legacy doesn't get the same 6 speed as the STi, wasn't saying it was, but people were acting like it might get a 5 speed, which they aren't even using anymore.

It's not just that CVT is the only transmission, it's that I have an '02 Legacy with a 6mt that makes more power than the 3.6R and gets better mpg than the 2.5i. And it was built 12 years ago!

Fuel quality could have something to do with it, but I guess I'd need more information.Wait, what? No, the H6 is a sad sack. It doesn't have more power than the 3.6R, and it definitely doesn't get better than 26/36/30mpg (the numbers for the '15 2.5i, according to the press release). I am talking about the S401. If I don't drive it like I just escaped the insane asylum, I know I get better than 30mpg combined. However, if I need it, then it has waaay more power than the lowly 256hp that the 3.6R makes.
This is all from 12-year-old technology. The press release touts "An aluminum hood reduces weight over the front wheels, enhancing steering response." Wonderful. I'm glad we've finally caught up to where Japan was in 2000. Or stuff like this: "New quick-ratio electric power-assisted steering delivers outstanding feel and also contributes to reduced fuel consumption. Revised spring and damper tuning and geometry and standard 17-inch wheels (18-in. on Limited) endow the 2015 Legacy with greater handling agility." Fantastic. That also matches the 12-year-old S401 (although I wonder how they really compare).
All the stuff they did was to make the outgoing Legacy less ugly, and in that they succeeded (it was hard to make it look worse though). Then they added some bell and whistles to distract that it's not a car anymore; it's an appliance.

Ah, you were talking about the 3.6R. I see. I thought you were comparing it to the base model for MPG or something.
I dunno, a smaller turbo motor should be able to outdo a bigger motor in terms of MPG if you drive it nicely.
I can't say that a AWD 6cyl sedan with an old style automatic would be expected to get much better than 28 hwy, but I also can't see Subaru investing a ton into the H6 as it's such a small market share internationally.
I'd rather see them continue with a GT model with a turbo and the standard 2.5i, which frankly is good enough for 95% of Legacy buyers, rather than the H6 model.
Honestly I love the CVT in the wife's Impreza, best automatic style transmission I've ever driven.
it doesn't do the whole jumping gear when you just touch the gas thing and it engine brakes awesomely.
I completely agree. The 2010 Legacy my mom has with the CVT is the best automatic style transmission I've ever used and actually has me considering the possibility of not driving a manual for my primary car eventually. The paddle shifting is fun (not as good as a DSG, but still better than any standard automatic I've used) and the full auto mode is nice and responsive with excellent launching power for taking off at intersections. Basically it nixes almost every big issue I have with an automatic, other than the pure "fun factor" of the manual. Supposedly the high-torque CVT and the standard 2nd gen CVTs are better than the model I've used, too.
Still, it's sad to see Subaru completely not offer a standard transmission in some of their models. I'm surprised they don't do a special order program or something for people looking for a manual. I do understand them not wanting to have excess models that nobody wants on dealer lots, though.

I was comparing the '02 S401 to the '15 3.6R AND the 2.5i since both were described in the press release. I was saying that the S401 has more power than '15 3.6R and better mpg than the '15 2.5i. And some of the "new" technology that will be on the '15 Legacy was already present on the '02 S401.
Nothing was ever said about the '02 H6, other than it was a sad sack. I'm just upset because I REALLY like Subaru, and I know they can do better than they have been.
Plus, I made a translation error earlier. I said this:
My guess would be Emissions standards.I don't buy that. Japanese standards are higher than all but California, most of New York, and New Jersey.
But actually, it looks like it is the same as California only. New York and New Jersey were not included, although they are among the many states that are adopting CARB standards either already or in the near future.

The sad thing is, this might just be SOA's fault. You know that the Japanese version will be a bit more agressive looking, and will almost certainly feature better tech. Look at how long it took to get EyeSight over here. And we finally adopted the Japanese e-brake (as MrLancaster keenly pointed out). Yes, the American version of the Legacy is boring, but the Japanese version will (hopefully) be what Subaru is really about. They are a Japanese car company. It would make sense that their best cars are for the Japanese people, because that's who they are.

Yamazaki - what did you get on the highway in the S401? I haven't actually seen you drop any numbers. Also, what was the average highway speed driven when you were getting that number?
Hwy MPG figures for USDM cars tend to be rather distorted, depending on the model & its gearing. Larger engine vehicles with very low revs at 70MPH tend to do well in standardized testing because there are no variables. That usually means American made cars like the HEMI V8 motors get inflated numbers, while high-revving smaller engines fare worse at higher speeds. From what I've read, they also use A/C during testing, which will affect a smaller engine more than a larger one. While a HEMI V8 Jeep Grand Cherokee could get 20MPG, it's unlikely it will except in perfect conditions. My mother's 2010 Legacy is rated 31MPG, it frequently gets 32-35 on the highway during the summer.
Oh, you have got to be shitting me... no manual at all? I am dissappoint.

MrLancaster posted a video up on Facebook earlier that once and for all defines the new car as a new generation and chassis.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zz4P8nN8HS8
During the video, each car has a license plate that lists the year, chassis code, and years since introduction of the line. They are: 1989BC00, 1993BD04, 1998BE09, 2003BL14, 2009BM20, and finally.. 2014BN25.
So, officially, the 6th generation sedan will be the BN chassis, and it stands to reason that the wagon will be the BS chassis.

Safety regulations have changed
Does Japan use ethanol blended gas?

Something tells me that dropping the manual trans from Legacy/Outback line is to keep Subaru CAFE compliant. I know they have to have a certain average, and the CVTs get better tested mileage than the 5/6MTs. Sad, but I understand why they are doing it. If they didn't the more fun cars wouldn't be able to be added to the US lineup.

I'm pretty sure you're right. It's not like it costs Subaru more to have a manual option as their production is so streamlined with everything being interchangeable among models, so it's probably motivated by the strict regulations coming up for 2016. I wonder how other manufacturers (like Mitsubishi or Jeep) are going to achieve this.
TGX4776
03-08-2014, 04:32 PM
Its probably demand and CAFE compliance. I would bet money on the fact that they didn't sell many manuals because people don't like to wait (mrlancaster) and its rare to find a manual on the lot.
Honestly if they offer the CVT with the faux 8 speed paddle shift option I'd be happy.
Disclaimer: I am not looking to modify it but use it as a daily commuter.

I'd think it's almost certain. The US relies on the automatic transmission way more than any other country. I don't know how popular manuals are in Japan but if it's anything like Europe, Subaru wouldn't survive axing their manual transmission.

From what I have heard the automatic is more prevalent in Japan due to heavy traffic.

I looked at the previous generation models on the international Subaru site, and the only Legacy I found with a 5MT/6MT was the EE20 diesel. (Now that would be fun here in the states!) other than that, CVT or 5EAT for the GT. At least the rest of the world got to keep a turbo of some sort. Leave it to SOA to switch yet another Legacy owner to a WRX. And no wagons?! I am ok with the styling... I guess.

My biggest problem with the new wrx is the 2k price increase. For the base price wrx I can get a fully loaded Focus ST, a Miata club, loaded brz, Golf Gti or even a loaded fiat 500 abarth and 2k worth of gas. All of these are vehicles I would love to own.

manual tranny are popular in other countries due to it being more efficient than Auto, most countries charge a lot more for gas than USA. And simpler mechanics ease of maintenance on manual vs AUTo.
CVTs are more efficient than manual therefore mostly will die off on everything but sports cars or at least sport oriented "affordable cars" and its not just the subaru
Wiscon_Mark
03-12-2014, 10:25 PM
Honestly, Subaru held out way longer with offering manuals on almost everything than any other non-performance make. Even the performance cars are overrun with paddle shifting automated gearboxes these days. It's a matter of pure performance for them, though, rather than efficiency.

About the CVT... What's the torque split? I was of the understanding the 5/6MT are 50/50, and, at least the old 4EATs were 60/40 (varying to 90/10 at 45 thanks to the duty C). Anyone know?... Or am I just blowing smoke? If it was a 50/50, I'd really think about the paddle shift version (if they ever come up with a turbo again).

I've heard it's around 60/40. I was able to get the tail out a bit in an '10 Legacy (CVT) so it's definitely got a bit of power going to the rear.

Car manufacturer are going away from manual since most new OB are female new generation drivers, probably 8:2 male/female ratio. For how much I hate auto/CVT, reality and acceptance for change I must endure since CVT also give manufacturer increase MPG, that's what everyone wants if gas kept going up beyond $4/gallon. In fact, Toyota doesn't make manual in their 4Runner already and many other manufacturer will followed. if you want to complain, complain to all the women driver around you since manufacturer caters to what demand drives them.
WRX, Impreza, and Crosstrek are more toward younger male drivers so definitely they continue to have manual, like I said depends on market demands.

So.. What gives, SoA.. They are going to physically have the 6MT in Indiana.. But not for the US market.

EPA regulations. It's all about the average of the make, so getting rid of the manual model ups the average. Canada doesn't probably have the same restriction. It's not like it ever added a lot of cost to put a manual into a Subaru, given the way they make their cars.
Well, that makes it easier to import and swap one than if you had to get it from overseas... Still...

The VIN is really low.. under 4300, but I redacted it since it is going to be someones car eventually.. Not as low as the two at WBM (103 for the BS, and 2124 for the BN), but still really low for a production car.

Subaru did say they'd sharpen up handling and quiet the interior down.
The ride was very quiet, I liked it a lot.
As for the handling, I cannot say too much about it as I did not thrash the car around. Given that I was the very first customer to drive it (It only had 24 miles on it when I got in), and Carlos (my sales guy there) was riding along with me. I will say that it was a very comfortable ride for normal road driving. It also has a decent amount of get up for a 4 cylinder. I was not very used to the CVT, but it did its job seemingly well.
amgarrety
07-16-2014, 01:24 PM
The handling is decent, but having driven the 2015 WRX first, I guess I was just expecting a little more from a handling standpoint. It was comfortable, but it did seem a bit loose trying to take a corner a bit faster than normal. What can you expect though? It's not a sports car, it's a family car, and in that respect, it does what it needs to. Any stiffer and you have better handling, but a more uncomfortable ride, and with active torque vectoring, the brakes help correct the oversteer made possible from a looser suspension. So overall, I think it's the best stock suspension for a Legacy to date, but it's not to everyone's preference (obviously).

This was my experience with the 2010 when I drove it through Chicago & Indianapolis - certainly enough for a quick lane merge (when the road signing forgets to tell you until the ramp is right there that you need to go across 4 lanes, haha). I am impressed with the CVT's ability to grab the most amount of power and use it efficiently. No more indecisive shift down to 2nd gear, only to have to shift to 3rd right after because it ran out of revs and have even more delay while you're trying to get in quickly. We were getting 33-34 MPG on the hwy at 70-75MPH (that model was rated 31) so I can only imagine what the new Legacy is going to get, rated at 36 HWY.

I've become disappointed in SOA I'm recent years, there are enthusiasts who make up a good number of Subarus sales, and push to want certain features for different models of cars, and it makes sense that their home market gets the better bells and whistles. But it still looks just... Meh. The only way I can think of describing how they market USDM Subies is like going to a very nice reastaurant and ordering a prime rib steak, but when the waiter delivers the food to your table, you get handed a Philly cheese. I think I would get this car only if a GT model is made. However, it only being just over half a year into production it's too early to say if they will, I'm fairly certain though. But, I will have to agree with Yama and say the new model is just an appliance, a cookie cutter car like the Camry and Accord. In the mean time I'll stick to the older generation Legacys while they're still around. If like to own a fourth gen in the next few years but I also want to squeeze a third gen in at sometime. Time will tell, I just hate playing the waiting game is all
Wiscon_Mark

There's just no pleasing enthusiasts.
Car is unique looking? It's ugly.
Car is decent looking? It's a cookie cutter.
Besides, there's a TON of examples of other Subarus that look just like a Toyota, Honda, etc. They're a Japanese auto-maker, not a British shed-car company.
You know what's hampering Subaru's marketing of turbo models & the Legacy GT/Legacy manual? The EPA. Their requirements hamstring smaller makes like Subaru into making tough choices on how to produce and sell their models. Personally, if Subaru doesn't sell that many manual transmission models, the MPG rating shouldn't affect their overall score of the auto-make. But, since the rules aren't written that way, Subaru has to make the decision that makes business sense to them in their largest market. If you want someone to blame, blame the US Government, who've been keeping great cars & great features out of this country for years.

Don't get me wrong, I think setting a bar for car companies to strive for is great and it has made a HUGE difference in what cars we're seeing from GM & Ford (the Fiesta Ecoboost probably never would have made it here otherwise) but their policies hurt the smaller car manufacturer's ability to cater to their enthusiasts, which are an even smaller minority.

In an unusual move for FHI... the 6th Generation Legacy has finally been released in Japan as of today, Several months after the North American launch.
Cliff notes for Japanese launch:
It seems that there is no 2.0 liter or 3.6 liter option there. All cars are 2.5 liter.
No more turbo model.
No manual model.
No more Legacy Wagon. Wagon is only available as Outback.
No noticeable exterior design differences between US and Japan.
Eyesight is now included on all models.
Their base model seems to be equivalent to our Premium 2.5i w/Eyesight.
Their Limited model seems to be equivalent to our Limited 2.5i w/Eyesight.
Rear Fog is now included on Japanese market.
Power passenger seat standard.

I've been thinking about this bit. When I heard the Japanese marked axed some of those models, I thought it was pretty much confirmation that we'd never see it in the US market because for so many years the Japanese market was first to introduce things like that. But it seems like the tables have turned, because we got the Legacy and the WRX before Japan, and we have newer DIT technology. Everything else seems to sort of follow the US market's lead. So maybe it's not a confirmation that these things are gone, they may just not be implemented in Japan because they haven't been in the US yet.
I'm not saying we'll see any of those models, but I wouldn't call it an end to these models for sure. Canada for instance still has a manual model. The loss of that in the Japanese market seems odd to me.
So, basically, when I go for my gen6 (in like, 2025 or something...) I'll need to look for a CADM version... Hmm...

The tax/insurance is also based on vehicle width. That's why the GD Impreza is a 3XX series plate instead of the 5XX plate for most sub 2L vehicles. Since the newer Legacys are wider anyway, might as well give them bigger engines.

I was thinking about this a bit more earlier today, and after doing some image searches, I noticed that both BP5/BL5 and BMG/BRG cars are also 3xx series plates. I guess Subaru has not had a 5xx qualifying Legacy since the BE5/BES/BH5?
I also see that the BM/BR chassis started with no 2.0 Turbo until the DIT was launched in the 2012 D-type, so perhaps a DIT model will come in the future in Japan as well.
Okay, how do they make a TMIC work with no hood scoop? Especially when there's that shroud that would keep air from reaching it unless it had a scoop?

I suspect the same way the 2015 Forester XT does it. It has ducts that carry air to the top mount intercooler. They seem pretty intent on getting hood scoops off of everything except the WRX/STI (for now).
Also, I just realized how strange it is that they kept a turbo on the forester in the US but didn't give the Legacy a turbo. I would've thought the Legacy would've been the more likely of the two to get a turbo if they had to decide between the two.
