I had a few questions about the ej22e bottom end, one being how much can the stock crank handle power wise?

I'm planning a turbo hybrid build with a 22e bottom end with 25d heads, I was wanting to use sti rods and was also wondering if I could safely bore out the 2.2 enough to fit sti pistons? Or if I would have to use aftermarket forged pistons?

Also could anyone point me in the direction of some info on how I would calculate the compression ratio of the ej22e with 25d heads with still pistons? Or maybe someone else has already done something similar and could tell me what the ratio is?

The crank itself handles large amounts of power fine, the failures in the 22e bottom usually occur within the pistons and rods. Forged custom pistons would be the way to go if you want to stay with ej22 piston size .If you start boring for sti pistons you may as well start with a ej25 case where sti pistons and rods would be a direct drop in. The ej22e and ej25d are the same block one is just a larger displacement, which is why the 22e is stronger because of the thicker cylinder walls. The compression with sti pistons and ej25d heads would not differ much from your standard sti engine which would be in the 8.5:1 area, but without the stronger semi closed deck block. Depending on the amount of power you are wanting to make 22e bottom with ej25d heads and a good tune should be plenty to put a smile on your face.

I was going to build a similar setup before I totaled my BK. If you're able to, try to get an ej222 (99 Legacy) phase 2 shortblock. According to this:

The phase 2 EJ222, and the EJ205 use the same rods, crank.

Also according to Wikipedia:


Changes in the 2.2 liter Phase 2 engines are as follows:
the engine and transmission are fastened with six bolts and two studs.
the thrust bearing has been moved to the number 5 position.
the oil groove in the number 1 and 3 have been changed to supply additional lubrication to the crank journal.

This results in a better block to turbo (IMO).

Personally I was going to use manley h beams and wiseco pistons. I prefer to bore out my cylinders as little as possible.

Also the EJ25d head (Use a 1997 - 1999) has a 46cc dish so that should be helpful in calculating compression ratio.
