It was a balmy eight degrees below zero today (Celsius, 17F) so I took advantage of the sunny weather to take an inspection of my new purchase.
A bit of back story:
I was bitten with the Subaru bug after the purchase of my '08 WRX hatchback. I was impressed with how practical and fun it was and when I had the opportunity to drive it in winter conditions I was grinning like a fool from start to finish.
I chose to sell the WRX in order to purchase a home so that I may have a garage to tinker with a car, plus it was that time in my life to make the plunge.
I had a few cars in between but I found myself wanting back in the seat of a Subaru. So I started stalking my local e-trader website for a Subaru. My budget was tight but I felt I could swing an older Impreza or legacy, maybe a Forrester.
So long as it was a manual transmission and in decent shape I would be interested. The BD series was a car I really liked the looks of but I believed was going to be out of my price range.
Along comes this very nice looking Rio Red LGT listed for $1000. He stated the engine was a write-off in his ad which reflected the price. I contacted him right away to arrange a meeting.
I met up with him and offered $900 so I could use the remaining $100 to get the car towed.
From the day I purchased the car (January 30th) until now it has not been warmer than -20 Celsius so I haven't had the chance to inspect the car and take pictures.
The pictures are not the greatest but I haven't had a good chance to clean the car anyway, so they'll do until spring.

The weather is warming and I wasted no time getting the motor out. It was easier than I thought it would be, and all the things I did wrong helped me the second time around. Charcoal canister got in my way and I didn't plug the power steering reservoir right away, otherwise it was smooth sailing.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2014/03/4BsRyeS-1.jpg
The bay itself is reasonably clean so it won't take too much effort shining it up.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2014/03/rjFMZ06-1.jpg
What I am referring to by "the second time around" is I went to the wrecker this afternoon to pull another motor. It's all disconnected but they wouldn't let me bring in a hoist and their forklift operator doesn't work weekends. My buddy and I are nowhere near strong enough to lift it either. The bad news is in the next two days someone could take it on me (not likely) or take it apart on me (slight chance). I hope I didn't put all that effort in for nothing. I have learned that the automatic makes things tricky by the steering column.

Protip. Not sure if you know but you could have left the A/C condenser in. If it was good at least you wouldn't have had to do a recharge. Glad to see you making progress ill be posting some of the same pictures soon lol

Turns out I had enough time to drop the engine in last night. It was a slow process solo, but with patiences and noodle scratching I nailed it. (http://i.imgur.com/B64xX7Ws.jpg)
The bits and bobs went on this morning/afternoon. Power steering reservoir, fuel filter, air intake, and whatnot. I had to pull the A/C from the other engine because the adapters into the lines were of different sizes. I derped while tightening the belt haha, I was spinning it the wrong way and it pulled the pulley all the way up the tensioner instead of pushing it down. Doh.
After everything was attached I crossed my fingers and turned the ignition. It fired right away which is a relief.
I then drove and got it registered and took it for a much needed wash. When I got to the wash (2 blocks from the insurance building) the CEL lit up. It drove home fine, runs and idles fine, no stuttering in the acceleration so I am not sure of the cause. My friend has an OBD 2 tool so when he gets here I can check it out.
There were a few more dings and paint chips than I first thought but overall it is in fantastic shape.

I also have this video (http://youtu.be/PkEVklc60Gg) (phone quality so audio sucks), there is a humming noise if you can hear it, can you identify it? I have no ideas.
The clutch pedal needs adjustment too. It's only the last 20% of travel before the clutch actually disengages.

That would be enough for the humming noise. I don't have it on my 98 and it makes that sound.

I attached it and I still get the hum. I will be going to the wrecker and retrieving another air box as I have noticed that the clasping mechanism that connects at the filter (motor side, 3 holes and tabs) is broken. There is a K&N filter in it but it almost looks too thick and that mechanism cannot latch together.
In the meanwhile, I connected an OBD II scanner to see why my CEL was on and retrieved a P0441 (http://www.obd-codes.com/p0441) error (Evaporative Emission Control System Incorrect Purge Flow). I erased it for now and will see if it returns. I removed my charcoal canister as the replacement motor did not have the vacuum lines on the right side of the motor by the canister than my old one had. From what I can tell, there are no disconnected vacuum ports either.
I have also started removing the factory head unit and after market (and non-functional) 6 CD changer underneath the passenger seat. All of the speakers are JBLs and there is a Sony 50Wx4 amp fastened to the ceiling of my trunk. From what I noticed, it was professionally done (the quality of the job showed). After I install the new head unit I will be adding a 10" woofer into the trunk for a little punch. I am designing it to take as little space as possible and will tuck it behind the single folding seat.
No pictures for any of this at the moment, I will take some tomorrow.

Today has been a less than exceptional day. I went to the wrecker to get a new air box and passenger brake calliper (mine has one seized pot). I was unable to get the calliper because I didn't bring all the right tools  . I was also hoping to find a side view mirror for my truck but had no luck there either.
I replaced the air box at least, but my CEL persists. So begins my vacuum line hunt :smt017 .
First thing I noticed was this solenoid that has this open barb.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2014/03/VqiVRDN-1.jpg
So I need to identify which solenoid it is and where/if that line goes to. Next bit of bad luck, first my sunroof wouldn't open it would just go up. After a bit of fiddling it opened only to not close. I had to manually pull it shut. Now it doesn't go up it just opens lol. Time to see what's up there too.

Cool, thanks. I will see if I can find a cap for it or fashion my own.
Ordered up some silicone vacuum hose, it's all due for replacement.
LED interior lights on their way too.
Audio update: Front two speakers are blown, rears sound good. I think the amp is wrecked as well, two channels don't seem to work.
Not too concerned at the moment as the two rear ones cover the sound really well.

Used car woes... Yep, I know what you mean. But you gotta look on the bright side. Now there's an excuse to upgrade to something better!
Or at least you get to learn more about your car. Idk, it can definitely be a pain sometimes though.

Based on my 97 GT and the 97 OB that came before it... that open barb is supposed to have a line running to a vacuum switch valve under the passenger side of the intake manifold. It runs into a T fitting and splits off right before the VSV.

My vacuum line has become my secondary issue. The has started overheating sporadically. I mentioned it on Facebook and ended up making a list of objectives:
1. Do a proper burping of the coolant system. - Done
2. Replace the thermostat - Done
3. Check flow of radiator/cabin heater - Done/not done
4. Replace the water pump - not done
It's frustrating as hell so far. Going to get a proper flush done to see if I have blockage somewhere. The radiator is cold to the touch even with the temp gauge at H so the fluid definitely isn't cycling.

if the radiator is cold, or only warm/hot in some places I would look into a faulty Radiator. By "burping" of the coolant did you use a cooling funnel at the radiator cap?
as in like this?

No I poured directly into the radiator but I used about 1.5 gallons filling it and am pretty sure there was no remaining air. I plan on taking it in to get flushed, they ought to tell if my radiator is no longer good right?

This is the official coolant refill procedure from Subaru:
-Elevate front of car
-Remove air vent plug from radiator.
-Fill engine coolant into radiator up to filler neck position.
-Fill engine coolant into reservoir tank up to upper level.
-Attach radiator cap and reservoir tank cap properly.
-Install air vent plug.
-Warm-up engine completely for more than five minutes at 2,000 to 3,000 rpm.
-Stop engine and wait until temperature drops to a safe level.
-If engine coolant level drops in radiator, add engine coolant to filler neck position.
-If engine coolant level drops from upper level of reservoir tank, add engine coolant to upper level.
-Attach radiator cap and reservoir tank cap properly.

If this doesn't work it will be water pump next.

It's been a few days. I was out of town visiting family and doctors. The radiator showed up while I was out and I had a look at it on Sunday.
Turns out it is the one for an automatic car (Has two barbs on the drivers side for hose attachment).
Here's where the story gets good. In all my wisdom and bountiful intelligence, my understanding was that these two barbs fed coolant to the transmission to cool it down. Going by this assumption, I Cut the barbs off and bought two caps to close the system off. There was a problem with the caps fitting so I went to an auto parts store to see if they had one with the correct inner diameter and thread pattern. The employee there informed me that the barbs in fact do not emit any coolant whatsoever and that it was ATF that flowed in and out of the barbs. So I could have had the radiator in yesterday. I am not a smart man.

If you mean with my overheating issue, I believe so. With the new radiator in, the temperature gauge has not gone over half and that is with some spirited driving to test (Although my interior heat disappeared on me today).
If you mean with my CEL then maybe? Haha I reset the code yesterday and it has not come back on yet, but last time it took a little while before it kicked in.
I will feel confident that both problems are resolved after a week of driving.

Also put in LED interior lights. No pictures because my passenger side interior light doesn't work, nor the middle dome light. Front dome lights work as does the driver side interior. Interestingly, the hazards turn on the front signals dimly, no light to the rears and no blinky blinky. Fuses checked out. My guess is a relay. I really like the snowflakes painted as well. They will be my future winter wheel arrangement. I started having over heating issues again (woooooo!) but I now know the problem. The thermostat I replaced sucks (it wasn't Subaru OEM. I know I know, but the one I bought was available and the Subie OEM was not. And it bit me in the ass). I have ordered a legit OEM one and it will be here on Monday. In the meantime, I am using a gutted one so coolant is always flowing through. What a pain in the ass that process was. I tried going without one first which resulted in a leak and after I gutted the one I had two more instances of my coolant leaking on me. Having my hands and arm wet with 0 Celsius coolant on three different occasions is unpleasant to say the least.
I got a chance to meet up with some local Subaru enthusiasts and we did a cruise to a small town (where I found my car was still overheating) Here is a picture:

Pro tip. Just put the gasket on without the thermo it will hold like a charm and not leak =) I've done it a few times in the past. Hope you can get it sorted. Keep us posted
There is supposed to be a gasket between the block and the inlet? Mine didn't have one lol. I used liquid gasket because it wouldn't stop dripping.

Wow it's been a long time since I updated this, mostly because I haven't done much but also because I have been busy with, well, life haha.
So without further ado, the new wheels!

They look infinitely better than the plastidipped snowflakes (but that is because I did a horrid job).
Also, overheating issue is solved (thermostat - damn knockoffs), though I have yet to install the OEM one.
Next on my list to fix is the leaking power steering pump.
(I bought some STi pinks, didn't get the top hats so they cannot go on yet - and now I'm not sure I want to lower it anymore)

Those wheels are quite a bit alright.
Did you ever get it properly repainted? You actually can't tell it's plastidip from the pics.

I'd just like to add something from a while back since I didn't see anyone else mention it.
Those barbs on the radiator are actually where transmission fluid enters the radiator to be cooled and returned to the transmission. Not send antifreeze to the transmission, you could have simply left them open and nothing would have been hurt. After my manual swap I just left my rubber lines cut off by the steering coupler until I pull the motor.
I like the new wheels, I wasn't big on the white snowflakes.
