View Full Version : Hesitation at low throttle on my '98 GT Auto

My car hesitates and almost stalls at low throttle (reversing into a spot/parking). Basically anything less than 15% throttle. It only does this when the car is in gear. Its an automatic and the engine revs fine when its in neutral.
Any ideas? Spark plugs, coil pack, PCV valve, iac valve?

Mine does the same thing but after it shift in to second gear. I was thinking tune up myself.

I seafoam'd through the intake manifold and changed my plugs to ngk iridiums this afternoon and that didn't help this problem.

I have read before that it could be the ECU its self. I have had some luck putting some STP fuel system cleaner in the tank when its full. It works for a little while.

So I'd need a new ECU or just to reset it? I was going to put Seafoam through the next tank.

I have Seafoam waiting for my next fill up. I was going to do a full tune up. Plugs, wires, fuel filter, and do the Neon MSD coil upgrade. See how that works.

I have the same issue. When im on a slight roll in second and floor it to pull out in traffic,it starts to choke itself out until i let up a bit off the throttle and then it throttles up normal. I have a manual trans with an intake and full exhaust and it didnt do this when the car was stock. I threw all sorts of new tune up parts at it plugs, wires etc and it didnt change the bogging down at full throttle at low rpm's.

Please keep us posted. I've done an air filter and plugs so far. The filter seemed to make a bigger difference but the one that came out wasn't really that dirty. :smt017

Mine only did it when it was cold out. It was worse before I started running a fuel system cleaner every once in a while. Mine is a 2.2L though. I would do the basic maintenance first. Like the spark plugs and wires and fuel filter. It also seems to happen less with the MSD coil.

It will be a few weeks before I can get in to it. I will keep you updated. May also want to watch your tach when it happens and see if the car revs up freely before hand. If it does could be a trans issue.
My 97, 2.2 was hesitating.
After 6 months, it turned out the harmonic balacer had loosened, and the timing gear behind it had slop in the keyway. I ended up replacing the harmonic balancer, the timing gear that is behind it, and of course, the woodruff key.
No hesitation now!
