View Full Version : Impreza Grafton's 07 STi

03-22-2014, 10:59 PM
Moved up in the world, got myself a fast toy. 2007 STi with 97k on the clock, everything has checked out mechanically, mostly just cosmetic blemishes from living in the rust belt. Dings here and there, a cracked front bumper, and chips in the paint from driving on winter roads.

The Day I picked her up, I had to leave my Legacy in the cold and drive the STi back home on crappy all seasons

The car has the "SPT performance pack" which is the intake and catback with the heat shield

More SPT goodies

Stock in the right places.

Did the first wash and wax today.

Right now I'm happy with the car in it's stock form. I am looking into a s204 lip, some 04-05 tails, and a set of DIY mudflaps. Next summer I plan to grab a set of 08-14 18" STi wheels so I'll have two sets to swap for the seasons.

^ Thanks.

One of my friends is a big car/photo buff, and he took a few professional level pictures of the car for me over the weekend.
Here they are:

It was a small shoot because the day was dreary this was coming out of a tunnel that goes under the interstate in my area.

So much for being stock, the factory cat in the downpipe died clogging up the 2nd cat. This left me with no boost and a very poorly running car.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2014/04/eTvu8Gfl-1.jpg (http://imgur.com/eTvu8Gf)

managed to shake this out from between the two cats:

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2014/04/GMvmBkOl-1.jpg (http://imgur.com/GMvmBkO)

so to repair this i'm getting a catted invidia downpipe and an accessport and jumping to stage 2

there was some paint peeling from under the wing and I've read the factory weather stripping begins to fail after a few years. I Pulled the wing off and found this:

I prepped the trunk lid and hit it with some rust preventing black paint

Again, congrats on the sti. Nice photos and it looks like fun. Just reading about the cat failure. I had no idea turbo cars could explode their down pipe cat innerds into cats down the exhaust pipe causing further damage. Is this an east coast rust thing or were you just unfortunate?

I've read about other happening like this, but I'm glad there wasn't a cat in the up pipe to kill the turbo.

you can cover the factory with red color gel, but it is not bright enough, I had to add 3 leds per control to get the color and brightness I was after.

Automatic intercooler sprayer, Found a guide on iwsti and it seemed simple enough.

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2014/11/UoKiatYl-1.jpg (http://imgur.com/UoKiatY)
This is a normally open pressure switch, when ever the boost pressure is over 12psi it will close the switch and if the system is on it will spray the intercooler as long as the boost stays above 12 psi

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2014/11/j0CyCrFl-1.jpg (http://imgur.com/j0CyCrF)
this controls the auto spray system, when off you have to press the spray button like normal, when on you can press the button or let the pressure switch turn on the sprayer.

The factory boost gauge has white back-lighting, while not as clashing as green I still wanted it to match.

The car has had strut clunk since I bought it, Finally had a chance to get some garage time and get the rears re-greased.
struts out:

old grease removed:

Installed a zerk fitting on both strut bodies and packed them with grease, reassembled and filled the rest of the way with a grease gun.

also had an extremely odd issue with my alternator, lost tension in the belt and found out the bolt that goes from the tensioner to the alternator snapped off right at the threads:

new bolt and I was back in business.

While working on the car I noticed that that the turbo inlet moved when I bumped my SPT intake, so naturally I went to tighten the hose clamp. I discovered that the factory inlet had at the least a hole in it and needed replacement.

so I ordered a Perrin turbo inlet

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/04/22Ipulfh-1.jpg (http://imgur.com/22Ipulf)

When I got the stock inlet out I found that it had completely cut in two:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/04/DoxUbRFh-1.jpg (http://imgur.com/DoxUbRF)

It's likely been the cause of the factory cats disintegrating and the rise in oil consumption,

The install sucked but was worth it

I've never liked how only the outer most tail lights light up for the brakes, so I decided to change that.

stock taillight harness:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/06/R1Az4eUh-1.jpg (http://imgur.com/R1Az4eU)

notice the white wire is coming out of both the tail light sockets and they use the same dual filament bulb (7443) but the wire is not coming out of the tape on the upper left socket

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/06/2Lm5XGGh-1.jpg (http://imgur.com/2Lm5XGG)

So I pulled it out of the tape and got creative

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/06/NHB1L3Lh-1.jpg (http://imgur.com/NHB1L3L)

Pulled the pin out of the connector and spliced the wires together

all reassembled

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2015/06/TndMa9ah-1.jpg (http://imgur.com/TndMa9a)

The cam bolts SUCK, broke a hex bit, messed up a 10mm allen wrench and killed a timing belt in order to attempt to get the bolts out. Had to use a 4ft cheater bar to get the exhaust pulleys off, and I failed to get the intake and they started to round out.

the solution is to drill out to a 3/8"s size bit and break off the head the rest of the bolt screws out finger tight.

With the overbore, what will your new displacement be?

2.5L still,
old bore was 99.5mm x 79mm stroke x 4 cylinders = 2458cc
new bore 99.75 x 79mm stroke x 4 cylinders = 2470cc

Thanks to the re-grind only one valve was in spec, going to mic the shims Thursday and find out how many I have to order and if I can just swap some around.

09-30-2015, 10:09 AM
Shouldn't have to mic the lifters, they're all labeled with their sizes on the underside.

Doing the rebuild by the book, book calls for it. I'm hoping that they are right on the money with the labels.

10-01-2015, 09:02 AM
Got it, no harm in being thorough! For some reason a lot of people don't realize they're marked so I figured I'd chime in. :) Looks like you're doing a good job on the rebuild!

10-02-2015, 01:20 AM

I mic'd them today, luckily only going to need to buy 11, but most of the lifters were .01-.03mm smaller than how they were marked so a 510 was really a 507 or a 500 was a 499

I'm not sure if he was trying to pull a U turn from the right lane to head South or if he was trying to get into the cemetery that's across the road.

Now I get to deal with insurance BS while it gets fixed :(

after touching up the aesthetics, I changed the transmission and rear diff oil finally with some Motul gear300. While I was under the car I installed a Group N transmission mount, Kartboy front and rear shifter stays, and a TiC piviot bushing. I attempted to change the shift linkage as well but the bushings were the wrong size.

More adventures with an old STi:

Monday leaving work I hit a pot hole and it sounded like a sledge hammer hit the back of the car. and the ride through town was slightly bouncy. After a spine shattering ride home I found the rear passenger side wheel more extended than it should be:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2016/05/Z7DoX9Wh-1.jpg (http://imgur.com/Z7DoX9W)

It would not compress at all, and after jacking the car up to inspect it the rear froze at full droop:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2016/05/6tKszpWh-1.jpg (http://imgur.com/6tKszpW)

after limping the car to the garage, with replacement struts in hand, I found that the shock had blow and filled the strut with oil, not allowing it to compress:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2016/05/Hr3Kxwph-1.jpg (http://imgur.com/Hr3Kxwp)

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2016/05/yHwwxZOh-1.jpg (http://imgur.com/yHwwxZO)

The surprise came from the drivers side, the spring perch was sitting about a half inch lower than it should and had a non factory speed hole:
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2016/05/GGgj2MRh-1.jpg (http://imgur.com/GGgj2MR)

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2016/05/ySPzQWIh-1.jpg (http://imgur.com/ySPzQWI)

I also replaced the front struts and put in some group n top hats to replace the cracked and bulging OEM's

The ride is a million times better now the rears are not on the verge of death and the fronts are working correctly

05-30-2016, 12:33 AM
I'm glad I could help! I still can't believe how bad the old struts were, pretty scary, eh?

05-30-2016, 08:23 AM
Incredibly scary, and I had checked the drivers side about a month ago and it was still in the proper place and not that rusty.

06-27-2016, 11:05 PM

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2016/06/HOjn1RZh-1.jpg (http://imgur.com/HOjn1RZ)

that made the interior of the housing get wet when driving through heavy rain
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2016/06/pFV213Zh-1.jpg (http://imgur.com/pFV213Z)

then the low beam would short out because the ballast was getting wet

the cause of the low beam beam problem was the reflector was burnt

even the chrome head light insert had heat marks

It's all back together and working perfectly.

Attempted to resolve the hot air intake on the STi, the first idea was an "intake box"

closed up the gap between the spt heat shield and the intake piping
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2016/09/Z9Z3Eywh-1.jpg (http://imgur.com/Z9Z3Eyw)

added brackets for the lid
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2016/09/50WTUfoh-1.jpg (http://imgur.com/50WTUfo)

top of the box
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2016/09/WfPjqLyh-1.jpg (http://imgur.com/WfPjqLy)

It didn't work very well while I wasn't seeing the 185 F intake temp while in traffic I was seeing 150+ F and it would take forever to cool down after the car got moving and would still be ~15-20 F above ambient temps when ever the temp did come down.

I got to looking at true CAI's decided I could make the SPT into a true CAI

Grabbed a 60° 2.75" silicone elbow and a 45° 2.75" piece of inter-cooler piping and done

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2016/09/Nl0EzPrh-1.jpg (http://imgur.com/Nl0EzPr)

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2016/09/FIuN1Krh-1.jpg (http://imgur.com/FIuN1Kr)

It works much better the temps do climb while sitting in traffic but the highest it's went has been 130, and it drops quickly once the car is moving. Cruising I'm seeing within 4-7 of ambient.

Logged for closed loop MAF scaling and the max correction was 2.2% from the OEM scale. I'm waiting on a wide band to scale open loop.

What an awesome journey your post has taken. Love your detailed pictures as well. Without a doubt the best year / color and model STI.

^ Thanks

I've pulled the CAI off the car and gone back to the short ram, every time it rained it would throw a code for the maf voltage, requiring a ecu reset to clear. It'll go back on in the summer, the 4degree above ambient is too good to miss out on.

Finally got a wide band so that I can monitor the car better and dial the OTS tune in with the intake:

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2016/12/uXEofn1h-1.jpg (http://imgur.com/uXEofn1)

I've got the 5V out wired into the analog input from the rear O2 sensor so I can log the wideband without needing a laptop and serial cable hooked up.

Then the multi disk changer died, and I took it apart to attempt to get the disks out and while it was apart I did a color change on the buttons:

Finally got a turbo blanket from PTP and got around to installing it:

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2016/12/4Dsp9ulh-1.jpg (http://imgur.com/4Dsp9ul)

This is the craziest thing, I left the garage after installing it and did several pulls and quickly pulled back into the garage and was able to touch the turbo heat shield without burning myself.

using the data from Injector Dynamics until a protune in October, wide band was happy during a pull and looks good in closed loop.

Moved the AOS to make some more room for a GR intercooler that's waiting to be installed

Going on the rollers at EFI Logics this Saturday!

The big day finally came, got the car up to EFI Logics for a protune by Calvin Dotson of Dotson Tuning.

Got the car all strapped down

baseline pull:

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2017/10/9SKLTTWh-1.jpg (https://imgur.com/9SKLTTW)

Before Protune
265 WHP & 284 WTRQ with some knock in the high rpms
275 WHP (+10) & 313 WTRQ (+29)
Knock free and stable AFR

I've very happy with the way the car is running, much more stable than the bro-tune I had done to get the car "ok" with all the mods it had done.

Go Mifune

I was happy stock, happier when I went stage 2, but the protune is awesome. I wish I'd have done it sooner

Burnt out my CB on the 48 HRS of Tristate drive, time to upgrade from the masking tape mount. Ordered a Cobra WX ST II CB and a JVC digital reciever.

Wiring mess, ran a coax extention from the CB to the trunk under the carpet.
