Hey all i am new to the Legacy world. I am looking into purchasing a second gen Legacy wagon. In my area (Central NY) Outbacks are very common in the classified ads. I was wondering if i could swap body parts and suspension to make it like a GT or even a LS. i have aspirations to turbo charge what ever engine i get either the 2.2 or 2.5. but that is a far off goal at this point as I'm still in college and don't have the time/money to undertake such a project. but a suspension swap i can handle.

Outbacks have the 2.5 anyway (?), and the GT suspension is just a tad firmer. Nothing to write home about.
You should just get an outback, and upgrade the suspension and voila, instant GT.
Upgrades include going to an Impreza or WRX-like setup. If you got coilovers you can do whatever the heck you want, as most coilover setups will fit just fine.

so will the KYB shocks and springs fit the outback because i thought i read some where the suspension was different.

The Outback struts and springs are what gives the Outback the lift it has. I'm pretty sure the mounts are the same, and regular Legacy stuff will swap in, lowering the Outback to Legacy height.

There are subframe spacers that help lift it as well.
And yes, a regular suspension will work on an outback, as several have demonstrated. It also works in reverse, as strat81 has demonstrated.

Okay. Although I could get the admin to move this thread to suspension.

LosDiosDeverde put outback struts and springs in his EJ22 legacy, so I am sure that you can go the other way.

As for wheels, I think multispoke (18 or so) look the best on any lowered wagon. I'd rock them if I could find some. It depends on the color of the car, but there are alot of options for wheels. Tires? I dunno.

www.discounttiredirect.com (http://www.discounttiredirect.com) has some nice wheel selections.
Anything that rocks on the sedan, should rock on a wagon.
I personally love the 5 or 6 spoke look.

2002-2004 WRX suspension works too. I have Megan coilovers on mine (gotta rotate the top hats ont he front) and it handles like a man.
Outbacks have all the good stuff from the factory - 2.5L engine, 2-piston front brakes, good gear ratios, big rear sway bar, etc. Get yourself some lowering springs, wider wheels (I use Chevy Beretta 15x7s) and a rear VLSD and you're set.

dont outbacks have taller subframe spacers? Those wouldnt affect the ride height, but they would change the suspension geometry when you lower it.
imo lsd is not your friend under 200hp.

I don't think the subframe spacers are any different. Mine are about 1" to 1.5" thick, but I think much thinner and the rear subframe would be resting against the fuel tank while the front crossmember would be very dive-inducing (changing the angle of the control arm).
