1997 BG 4eat noises

At low speeds, it sounds more of a crunching noise, turns into a whining sound at higher speeds, louder with accelleration and quick deceleration.

I fear it's going tl start a fire or leave me stranded on the highway, and believe it's a bearing in the front differential, or if i'm calling it wrong, where the cv shafts are attached.

It looks like the kits abailable are more for the transmission repair, as i don't see any bearings within the images. I'm wondering what my options are on this, and what other vehicles outside hvae the same transmission swapping abilities. I would rather repair, but practicalities will dictate.

I have a similar issue. 1996 4eat. Similar symptoms. I would describe it as a grinding though. Can you give the links for the repair kits? I have eliminated the possibilities of the cv joints and my suspicions are now either transmission, wheel bearing going out , or front diff.

Rockauto.com usually has the parts, but not always. Try and find a front control arm bushing anywhere... :-/

I'm actually curious, as to the 5eat and the cvt. can these go in with maybe just a transmission computer swap. I'd love the cvt!

I doubt the CVT would work with older ECUs, given the amount of information needed for its constant shifting. I think there's a reason it's usually a new generation (and a new engine in the case of the Impreza) before the CVT gets introduced for each model.

The 5EAT might be possible though, not sure if anyone has ever done a swap to that from a 4EAT before though.

If the 5eat was available in something pre-CANbus then it's a possibility. Not so much if it wasn't. At the very least you would need to swap the tcu and rewire for it. Not something I can recall seeing, even for a phase 2 4eat into a phase 1 car, I may be wrong though, I don't keep note for auto to auto swaps.

So the result was that I bought a used one from a wrecker from Hamilton Ontario, had Day & Ross ship it to Saskatoon Saskatchewan, and I loaded it into the back of my Outback, and took it to the farm and spent a day doing that by myself.

There is something that I have to point out, as it does seem to be a tad bit important. The transmission is from a '98 outback, where mine is a '97. The starter seems to stick in a bit further on the '98, or something about it anyways, where the ring gear on the torque converter touches the starter, sometimes. The result is a zipping sound that must be corrected.

I'm wondering what the best solution is for this. Is there a spacer made for this, or should i just throw on a couple washers between the two bodies?
