Hi All,
First. I am a big Legacy fan from Sweden. Around the 40ish. Started with a few Impreza but we all know who is the king, don't we :smt007
I am planning to do a little better introducing in the new member section later on but I am know so excited to show you my new love!
I am very proud to announce that there is another S401 outside Japan.
This car has been my dream car for many years. It has finally arrived from Japan to Sweden after a long waiting.
I think she is stunning and cannot wait to drive her but first we have to change headlights and get it road legal.
More picture will follow later on.
What do you think ?

Epic. Welcome to the SLi. I have gotten to ride in the S401 that is in the US and I love that car. The handling is amazing. It's everything I want out of my 3.0R.

Just so you know, your car is 2002, not 2003. My car was built in December of 2002 and it was after yours.
How did you find the car anyway? I think it would be difficult outside of Japan.

Yes you are correct, manufactured November 2002 but still modelyear 2003. Changed my signature to clarify.
Found the car at gtnet and used a swedish import firm to get it here.
Here is the advert from gtnet http://www.gtnet.co.jp/eng/usedcar/used ... 1000620515 (http://www.gtnet.co.jp/eng/usedcar/usedcar_detail.php?group_code=7&zaiko_code=00510000411000620515)

Here, check this out: http://www.sti.jp/product/previousmodel/index.html
Our cars were actually made to order. So they were sold in '02 and made in '02. There isn't even 400 of them. They never reached their target. So your car is even more rare than you think! There were only 157 blue (O2C) ones made.
I know it's a small thing, but there is so much that isn't known about these cars that if we let little facts be incorrect, then at what point do we correct them? As an owner of the car, people will listen to what you say about it. That makes it even more important that you have all the right information.
Thank you for the website! I didn't know about gtnet.

Ok so all S401 was manufactured 2002?
I also found this http://www.gtnet.co.jp/eng/usedcar/used ... 1000610408 (http://www.gtnet.co.jp/eng/usedcar/usedcar_detail.php?group_code=7&zaiko_code=00510000161000610408)
Year 2003/02 but that may be date of registration?
For me it is not important if it is a 2002 or a 2003. The most important thing is that it is a S401 and all info is correct. Thank you for clarifying.
I was thinking in terms like it is today (at least european cars). They dont use calender year for modelyear. Even though it is manufactured oktober 2014 it is a 2015 modelyear.
I update my signature again

Was always wondering if those lips would fit a 3rd gen... Should've bought one and tried (seen a few "cheap" ones, now none for sale - pretty rare item just like (crappy) Genome exhausts).
Yes I am from New Zealand - seen a few personally in grey and blue (and a few for sale), as well as S201 and S402, NZ must be a blessed country  We do get some pretty cool JDM stuff over here, you just need to patient and know what to look for.

How does this bypass works?
What is this green lamp?
The exhaust electronically opens up at a certain RPM and flows more and gets louder. That's actually a system shared by all of the RSKs and GT-Bs with manual transmissions.
The green lamp looks like an aftermarket add-in.

So normal exhausts are non-standard then??.. I've seen a lot of B4/GT-B's and only a few had a "varex" type muffler, please supply some screenshots, would love to educate myself.
Edit: can see "Variable Muffler Control Unit" and related hardware in my manuals, but definitely not a full-on bypass system.

I would expect that the "normal exhausts" you are seeing are more likely just Non-Original. How many 12-13 year old cars are likely to have their factory-fitted exhaust on them? And of those aftermarket replacement exhausts, how many would also have the bypass mechanism? Probably not many..

The handling with the tein coilovers is very good. It is so quick. It is far more better to drive than I could imagine. Must be the best Subaru (Legacy) that has left the factory

Maybe have seen around 40 different S401 on the net all without spoiler.
I must have been an option from factory. But I think it looks so much better without it

America is so lame with not allowing certain cars to be imported like this extreme auto. We can have modern day muscle cars with well over 500-600 HP but we can't buy a RHD Factory tuned Subaru with half the power......
Well, a part of it is that many Japanese car companies just don't feel that their top-of-the-line cars would sell well enough here.

And they're right. How many Westerners would shell out $65K for the S402? That's about how much it cost when it came out.
True, but on the other hand, that's a limited edition type car. What about cars in the same segment as the Evo or the STi? They're selling well enough, yet what competition do they have? The Focus ST? I don't think so.

:smt026 :smt026 :smt026 The S401 is so fantastic. I have owned a 03 and 05 Impreza sti. Dont know why but this car is so much better. I thinking to bring one more s401 but in another color. I am in heaven when driving....maybe I am sick...

Did you have it tuned? I saw a post over on XRT had posted some S401 tune data that you commented on.
Also, there is at least 2 S401s within the UK that I know of.
As for comparing an S-series car to a normal STI or tS car is not fair.. they are very much apples and oranges. STI and tS cars are normal cars with some different engines, better tunes, and some bolt on upgrades. S-series cars (S201, S202, S203, S204, S205, S206, S401, S402) are practically rebuilt from the ground up to STIs exacting standards.

The tune is still going on.
I know there was one blue s401 (#63/400) in uk that crashed a couple years ago. According to uklegacy forum this is the only one in UK but if you know about one more please tell me more.

Xtreme Racing Tuning ? View topic - DanS - 2002 JDM Subaru Legacy S401 STI (034/400)- Tuning (http://www.xtremeracingtuning.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=528&p=1639#p1637)
With V7 the fuel cut is gone. Car goes like mad from low rpm to redline at WOT at all gears.
Car now performs with really good power. It also is very smooth, starts more easy and have better idle. Also noted that the engine sounds is different. With stock rom the engine sounded like there where some restriction. Now, engine can breathe and it can also be noted on the sound of the engine.
This is the performance the car should have had when it leave the factory.
I am very happy with this tune!

It is now tuned :smt023
Please read my review about XRT. I recommend XRT for all you needing a perfect tune.
This car is from what I know the only one in Europe at this time. Only made in 401 pcs year 2002.
As this engine is a hand built STI engine for minimum 100 octane is was very important to get it tuned for swedish 98 octane and also some improvement.
I have been following openecu forums since 2007 and ONE guy have always stand out in lots of posts. Mr. Edward!
So when car was ordered I contacted Ed and asked if could help me tune the car.
When the car was road legal we started the tune.
The support from Ed is totally outstanding. He responds to question almost 24 hours a day. He send me new updated roms faster than I could flash and log. His commitment is unique. He is more than a tuner, he is also a friend and a listener. Think that is extremely unique. He care about you and the car!
Off course the tune is also outstanding. The car is now starting more easily, idle more smooth, better respond, better engine sound, more power low and high. This tune is what Subaru should have done. Very Impressive. I can recommend all you that need a real good tune XRT and Mr. Edward.

Just so you know- they did not make 401 cars. They had a goal of 400, but they never reached the goal. They only made 286 cars. 157 WR Blue, 69 Grey Opal, and 60 Black Topaz Mica.

Out of curiosity.. what sort of fuel is available in your country? I wonder how badly the car was being held back with the stock tune due to fuel octane/quality. The S401 was designed with 100 RON in mind.

No more update for about 7 months. Car is placed in a barn during the winter. The last thing we did was to plastidip the plastic parts of the interior were the "coating" has cracked. It became very nice and looks almost like original.

Car is back home from the barn during winter. A new catback will soon be installed on the S401. A new member also arrived from Japan during the winter. A Forester STI :smt054
